A series of four trials were conducted on inland saline groundwater of 58 g L?1 diluted to lower salinities up to 10 g L?1 and later manipulating its ionic concentrations to enhance the survival and growth of Penaeus monodon postlarvae (PL). In the first experiment, the survival of PL was tested at several salinities (10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 58 g L?1), and the survival of PL was studied in comparison with natural sea water of similar salinities. Complete mortality of PL was observed at all salinity levels within 144 h. Longest survival for 96 h followed by 72 h was found at 10 and 20 g L?1 salinity respectively. In the second experiment, survival of PL was tested at 10–20 g L?1 salinity at different concentrations of calcium varying between 100 and 300 mg L?1. The survival of PL could be increased to 7 days at 12.5 g L?1 salinity by reducing the calcium level to 200 from 921.8 mg L?1 with magnesium and potassium levels of 208.5 and 30.03 mg L?1 respectively. In the third experiment, the survival of PL could be further enhanced to 18 days at the same salinity by increasing the magnesium level from 208.5 to 400 mg L?1 with potassium held at 30.03 mg L?1. Survival and growth of PL in inland saline water of 12.5 g L?1 salinity similar to performance in sea water of the same salinity was achieved by increasing the potassium concentration from 30.03 to 200 mg L?1 with calcium and magnesium levels of 199.5 and 199.4 mg L?1 respectively.  相似文献

Micromorphology indicates that soils of the central part of the Gangetic Plains are polygenetic. They occur on surfaces originating at 13 500, 8000, 2500, >500 and <500 BP (QGH5 to QGH1, respectively). The QGH5 soils on upland interfluves show degraded illuvial clay pedofeatures of an early humid phase (13 500–11 000 BP) and thick (150–200 μm) microlaminated clay pedofeatures of a later humid phase (6500–4000 BP). The earlier clay pedofeatures were degraded by bleaching, loss of preferred orientation, development of a coarse speckled appearance and fragmentation, whereas those of the later phase are thick, smooth and strongly birefringent microlaminated clay pedofeatures. The illuviation was more extensive during the later phase, as indicated by enrichment of groundmass as discrete pedofeatures of clay intercalations. Pedogenic carbonate was formed during the intervening dry phase from the early Holocene to 6500 BP. It forms irregularly shaped nodules of micrite and diffuse needles with inclusions of soil constituents. The subsequent change to wetter conditions caused dissolution–reprecipitation, which resulted in partial to complete removal of carbonate from soils over large areas.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between soil physicochemical characteristics and soil microbial C, N, and P in Indian dry tropical ecosystems are discussed. The major ecosystem studies were on forest, savanna, cropped fields, and mine spoils. The highest microbial C, N, and P levels were recorded from the mixed forest and the lowest levels in 5-year-old mine spoil. Across the sites, microbial C ranged from 226 to 643 g g-1, microbial N from 19 to 71 g g-1, and microbial P from 9 to 28 g g-1 soil. The proportion of soil organic C contained in the microbial biomass ranged from 2.2 to 5.0%. The microbial C: N ratio in these soils ranged from 7.4. to 13.1 and the microbial C: P ratio from 16.6 to 30.6. The concentrations of microbial C, N, and P were correlated with several soil properties and among themselves. The soil properties, in various linear combinations, explained 90–99% of the variability in the microbial nutrients. Grazing of the savanna had some effect on the level of microbial biomass, and as the mine spoil aged, the level of microbial C, N, and P also increased.  相似文献

Summary Fifteen- and forty-year-old cropfields developed from a dry tropical forest were examined for soil organic C and total N and soil microbial C and N. The 15-year-old field had never been manured while the 40-year-old field had been fertilized with farmyard manure every year. The native forest soil was also examined. The results indicated that the native forest soil lost about 57% and 62% organic C and total N, respectively, in the 0–10 cm layer after 15 years of cultivation. The microbial C and N contents of the forest soil were greater than those of the cultivated soils. Application of farmyard manure increased the biomass-C and -N levels in the cultivated soil but the values were still markedly lower than in the forest soil. There was an appreciable seasonal variation in biomass C and N, the values being highest in summer and lowest in the rainy season. During an annual cycle, biomass-C contents varied from 180 to 727 g g–1 and N from 20 to 80 g g–1 dry soil, and both were linearly related. Microbial biomass C represented 1.6%–3.6% of total soil organic C and microbial biomass N represented 1.7% 1–4.4% of soil organic N.  相似文献

Summary In a greenhouse study we examined the effects of vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizae (VAM) inoculation, using Glomus macrocarpum and of Zn application on dry matter production and Zn uptake by greengram in two mollisols. The VAM inoculation significantly increased the dry weight of different plant parts and the Zn uptake in both soils. Inoculated plants showed a greater response to the application of Zn at 2.5 and 5.0 mg kg-1 soil in a Zn deficient clay loam soil. The inoculated plants also absorbed — more water than the uninoculated plants. Mass flow and diffusion were the principal processes by which Zn reached the plant roots; mass flow was particularly important in the absence of VAM in a sandy soil fertilized with higher Zn doses (5 and 10 mg kg-1 soil). The greater supply of Zn to inoculated roots was attributed to an apparent diffusion process rather than to mass flow of Zn.  相似文献

In cattle production systems, an intense selection pressure for production traits has resulted in the decline of fertility traits. To optimize an efficient reproduction system, the inclusion of both male and female fertility traits in the selection process is very much essential. RAPD (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA) was developed as a molecular biology tool and has been extensively used, to study intra- and interspecific genetic diversity. The present study was undertaken to utilize RAPD primers to investigate the association between DNA markers and semen quality traits viz. Sperm concentration, total sperm count ejaculate and initial sperm motility and thereby to identify good/poor semen producers. DNA isolated from the blood samples of healthy bulls was subjected to RAPD-PCR. The multiple regression analysis followed by independent t test was carried out to identify suitable markers. Based on the results, only 12 bands were identified as marker suitable for any of the quality trait. This includes, OPA2 ~ 760, OPA2 ~ 700, OPA6 ~ 1,200, OPA9 ~ 400, OPA9 ~ 380, OPA12 ~ 970, OPA14 ~ 715, OPA14 ~ 605, OPA16 ~ 485, OPA17 ~ 860 and OPA18 ~ 480. Multiple regression analysis selected, OPA2 ~ 760 and OPA2 ~ 1,750 for sperm concentration and OPA2 ~ 760, OPA2 ~ 700, OPA9 ~ 620, OPA4 ~ 670 and OPA18 ~ 1,015 for total sperm count/ejaculate. But the t test revealed a significant association between OPA2 ~ 760 and total sperm count. Further, discriminant function analysis also identified this marker in the first step itself. The results of the present study can be exploited as a low-cost alternative strategy for identification of good /poor semen producers in crossbred bulls at an early age.  相似文献

The effect of protein oxovanadium(V) ion concentration and pH on the ratio of diffusion current (id/id0) was studied in vanadium(V) ovalbumin-S and denatured ovalbumin systems. In both the cases marked decrease in diffusion current was observed at the respective pH values, indicating that binding takes place with cationic groups of the proteins. The binding sites (n) were found to be pH dependent. The uniformity of logK and ΔG 0 value at all pH values indicated the involvement of same sites in interaction. Furthermore, the linear scatchard plots in both the systems supported the involvement of single class of independent sites in oxovanadium(V) anion interaction. The difference in binding sites (n) has been attributed to the folded structure of ovalbumin-S while unfolded one of denatured ovalbumin.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effects of environmental and biological variables on the toxicity (LC50) of mercuric chloride on the fish Notopterus notopterus. The results reveal that the change in temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH and fish size in experiments is highly significant both at 1 and 5% levels except in size, where it is insignificant at 1% level.  相似文献

Rainwater samples (N = 51) were collected at Rampur, an areafree from anthropogenic activity during the monsoon of 1997 and1998. The concentration of ions follows a general pattern as Ca> NH4 > Mg > SO4 > Cl > F >Na > NO3 > K > HCOO >CH3 COO. The pH of precipitation ranges between 5.9 and 7.4. The levels of Ca and Mg at this site are higher than otherremote sites, probably dominated by particles of soil origin.Good correlation between Ca, NO3, SO4, HCOO and CH3COO indicate that a fraction of NO3, SO4, HCOOand CH3COO may be derived from soil or associated with Ca and Mg after neutralization. The order of neutralization factorCa (2.19) > NH4 (1.26) = Mg (1.26) indicates that majorneutralization occurred by Ca. Factor analysis suggested thatCa, Mg, Na, K, NO3, SO4, HCOO and CH3COO arecontributed by soil. NH3 is known to exist as(NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3 and NH4Cl. Theymay be formed in the atmospheric water droplets by scavenging ofaerosols and reaction of gaseous species.  相似文献
