Background
Intensively cultivated agricultural landscapes often suffer from substantial pollinator losses, which may be leading to decreasing pollination services for crops and wild flowering plants. Conservation measures that are easy to implement and accepted by farmers are needed to halt a further loss of pollinators in large areas under intensive agricultural management. Here we report the results of a replicated long-term study involving networks of mostly perennial flower strips covering 10% of a conventionally managed agricultural landscape in southwestern Germany.Results
We demonstrate the considerable success of these measures for wild bee and butterfly species richness over an observation period of 5 years. Overall species richness of bees and butterflies but also the numbers of specialist bee species clearly increased in the ecological enhancement areas as compared to the control areas without ecological enhancement measures. A three to five-fold increase in species richness was found after more than 2 years of enhancement of the areas with flower strips. Oligolectic bee species increased significantly only after the third year.Conclusions
In our long-term field experiment we used a large variety of seed mixtures and temporal variation in seeding time, ensured continuity of the flower-strips by using perennial seed mixtures and distributed the measures over c. 10% of the landscape. This led to an increase in pollinator abundance, suggesting that these measures may be instrumental for the successful support of pollinators. These measures may ensure the availability of a network of diverse habitats and foraging resources for pollinators throughout the year, as well as nesting sites for many species. The measures are applied in-field and are suitable for application in areas under intensive agriculture. We propose that flower strip networks should be implemented much more in the upcoming CAP (common agricultural policy) reform in the European Union and promoted more by advisory services for farmers.182.

Irrigation tanks in India are common property resources. Tanks provide not only for irrigation, but also forestry, fishing, domestic water supply, livestock, and other uses. Using empirical results from a study of tank performance from 80 tanks in Tamil Nadu, South India in two time period: 1996-97 and 2009-10, this paper evaluates tank irrigation system performance in terms of economic output and revenue generation forirrigation and other uses. The results indicate that irrigation and other productive uses put together raised the total value of output at tank level by 12 % in 1996-97 and just 6 % in 2009-10. This may suggest that tank multiple use values are small and getting smaller, and therefore not worth consideration. However, it was also found that, while declining in absolute terms, non-irrigation uses provided the majority of tax revenues and still more than cover government's operation and maintenance expenditure (O&M) budget. This study describes growth variation within groups of salmonids and the relation to initial fish weights and feeding levels.
PIT-tagged rainbow trout (RT) and brook trout (BT) of start weight 120–170 g were reared in separate tanks for 9 weeks. Both
species were fed each day either a high ration close to satiation (H) or half of this ration (L). Four experimental groups
(RT-H, RT-L, BT-H, BT-L) were studied with regard to their propensity to increase weight in accord with their initial weight.
The slope of the regression line between initial weights (g) and weight increases for individuals in each tank in each period
was applied as indicator for this propensity (termed “slope”). All calculated slopes in the experiment were positive which
indicates the general ability of weighty fish to gain more weight than smaller individuals. The average slope during all 9 weeks
was 2–4 times higher for RT-L (5.91) than for all other groups (RT-H: 1.50, P < 0.01; BT-H: 1.76, P < 0.01 and BT-L: 2.88, P < 0.05), indicating the particular propensity of large RT to gain weight when feed was restricted. Overall, ration level
had large impact on slopes (H: 1.63, L: 4.39, P < 0.01), while this was not the case for species (RT: 3.71, BT: 2.32, P > 0.05). The magnitude of slopes decreased over time (weeks 0–3:4.27, weeks 3–6:3.02 and weeks 6–9:1.74, P < 0.05). The observed differences in weight gains between experimental groups were reflected in differences in coefficients
of variations (CVs) for body growth. RT had larger body weight (BW) CVs compared to BT (0.257 vs. 0.206, P < 0.01) indicating more uneven feed share among RT than among BT in general. RT-L had significantly higher BW CVs than all
other groups (0.300 vs. 0.184–0.229, P < 0.01). The observed differences in weight gains enhance size variations in terms of higher CVs, and this may have implications

A farm-level financial feasibility was performed to examine the use of shelterbelts as a swine odor mitigation technology.
Shelterbelts are purposefully planted rows of trees and shrubs around the main sources of swine odor—swine buildings, manure
storage systems, and crop fields that receive land applied manure. By using a series of model pork finishing farms and a number
of differing shelterbelt design scenarios, the shelterbelt establishment and long-term (20 years) maintenance costs were calculated
using a discounted cash flow analysis. Total costs for examined pork finishing farms, depending upon the shelterbelt design
scenario, and whether or not government cost-share programming was used, ranged from $0.01 to $0.65 per pig produced. Study
results emphasized the importance of cost-share programs, particularly Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). In
most cases, both with and without cost-share programming, the total costs were well below reported pork producer expenditures
for odor management.

A field-based study was carried out to determine the productivity and production cost of the tree length (TL) and the wood assortment (WA) systems implemented under small-scale forestry conditions in two Scots pine stands in Northern Greece. Tree felling and processing productivity were estimated at 8.64 m3 per productive machine hour (PMH?1) and 10.21 m3 PMH?1, respectively. Wood felling and processing times were strongly dependent on dbh and total tree volume. However, when manual debarking was also considered the productivity rates decreased to 1.96 and 1.43 m3 PMH?1, respectively. Skidding productivity was calculated to be 3.35 m3 PMH?1 for TL and 7.17 m3 PMH?1 for WA, respectively. Strong correlations have been found between the net skidding time and (a) the skidding distance and (b) the load per turn in both wood harvesting systems. Production costs varied greatly, from 19.38 € m?3 up to 44.81 € m?3 of roundwood depending on the harvesting system and the inclusion of debarking. The findings suggest that the WA system is more efficient in terms of productivity and production cost than TL, and that there is a substantial optimization potential. The optimization potential can be encoded in four suggestions: (a) opening up of more forest roads to reduce high skidding times, (b) replacement of manual debarking by mechanical debarking at the sawmill, (c) replacement of old pieces of equipment with newer ones and (d) training of the existing workforce. 相似文献

Salinity is one of the major abiotic stresses that severely effects rice production throughout the world. Previously, there have not been many studies which focused on studying diversity among rice germplasm based on specific physiological traits for salt tolerance. Our diversity study was based on physiological traits such as Na+ concentration, K+ concentration, K+/Na+ ratio, osmotic potential, and biomass which are major components determining salt tolerance. This study has systematically analyzed phenotypic data of 191 germplasms in two different salt concentrations apart from the control. The current study identified salt tolerant germplasms based on their response to a single physiological trait as well as a combination of different physiological traits. Some of the germplasm identified outperformed known salt tolerant cultivar Pokkali. This study identifies correlation among various physiological traits. The salt tolerant germplasms can be taken forward into developing better varieties by conventional breeding and exploring genes for salt tolerance. 相似文献

Context
Multiple ecological drivers generate spatial patterns in species’ distributions. Changes to natural disturbance regimes can place early successional habitat specialists at an increased risk of extinction by altering landscape patterns of habitat suitability.Objectives
We developed a series of hypotheses to evaluate the effects of landscape structure, fire history, and site-level habitat quality on site occupancy by an early successional specialist, the eastern chestnut mouse (Pseudomys gracilicaudatus).Methods
We obtained eight years of monitoring data from 26 sites in recently burned heathland in southeast Australia. We used generalised linear models to determine which explanatory variables were related to occupancy. We also explored predictability in patterns of small mammal species co-occurrence.Results
Landscape structure (patch area, landscape heterogeneity) was strongly related to site occupancy. Site occupancy was associated with dead shrubs in the understory and rock cover on ground layer, but was not directly influenced by recent or historical fire. Contrary to contemporary ecological theory, we found no predictable species associations in our early successional community.Conclusions
We recommend surveys take account of landscape configuration and proximity to suitable habitat for optimal results. Fire regimes expected to promote eastern chestnut mouse population growth should encourage the retention of critical habitat features rather than be based on temporal rates of successional stages. For management to adequately account for post-disturbance patterns in early successional communities, a species-by-species, multi-scaled approach to research is necessary.190.
A field experiment was conducted to compare water productivity of short- and long-duration rice cultivars transplanted on different dates under variable irrigation regimes during 2012–2014. The experiment was laid out in split plot design keeping combinations of three dates of transplanting (15 June, 25 June and 5 July) and two cultivars (PR 115 and PR 118) in main plots and four irrigation regimes [irrigation at 1, 2 and 3 days after infiltration of ponded water (DIPW) and continuous ponding (CP)] in subplots. Crop transplanted on June 15 and 25 produced statistically similar but significantly higher grain yield than July 5 transplanted crop. Grain yield increased to the tube of 17.2 and 15.6% under early transplanting on June 15 and 25 compared to July 5, respectively. However, amount of irrigation water applied decreased by 23.6 and 12.9 cm for July 5 and June 25 transplanted crop compared to June 15 transplanted crop, respectively. Apparent crop water productivity (ACWP) and total crop water productivity (TCWP) were significantly higher in June 25 transplanted crop than in June 15 and July 5. Similarly, energy use efficiency and energy productivity were also the highest in June 25 transplanted crops followed by June 15 and the least in July 5. Significantly higher grain yield was observed in cultivar PR 118 as compared to PR 115 under June transplanting dates (15 and 25 June). However, reverse trend was observed in late transplanting on July 5. Significant reduction in grain yield of PR 118 was recorded with delay in transplanting from June 25 to July 5, but PR 115 performed statistically similarly under all the three dates of transplanting. Irrigation water applied was 9.4% higher in PR 118 as compared to PR 115. ACWP and TCWP were 7.9 and 9.2% higher in PR 115 than in PR 118, respectively. ACWP and TCWP of PR 115 increased with delay in transplanting from June 15 to July 5, but differences between June 25 and July 5 remained nonsignificant. However, in the case of PR 118, ACWP and TCWP remained statistically similar between June 15 and June 25 and thereafter decreased significantly with delay in transplanting to July 5. Rice grain yield did not show any significant effect on irrigation application frequency, i.e. irrigate continuously or applied water at 1, 2 and 3 DIPW. However, 5.9, 15.2 and 23.5% higher irrigation water applied was recorded in continuous ponding than in irrigation application at 1, 2, and 3 DIPW, respectively. Apparent water productivity and energy use efficiency were 5.9 and 7.0, 15.3 and 13.0, and 19.8 and 23.0% higher in irrigation scheduling at 1, 2 and 3 DIPW than in CP, respectively. 相似文献
