A field experiment using system of rice intensification (SRI) techniques was conducted in Chiba, Japan during the 2008 rice-growing
season (May–September) with eight treatment combinations in a split–split plot design (S–SPD) to observe the potential of
SRI methods under the temperate climatic conditions in Japan. Intermittent irrigation with alternate wetting and drying intervals
(AWDI) and continuous flooding throughout the cropping season were the two main-plot factors, while the effects of age of
seedlings and plant spacing were evaluated as sub and sub–sub plot factors, respectively. The experiment results revealed
that the proposed AWDI can save a significant amount of irrigation water (28%) without reduced grain yield (7.4 t/h compared
with 7.37 t/h from normal planting with ordinary water management). Water productivity was observed to be significantly higher
in all combinations of practices in the intermittent irrigation plots: 1.74 g/l with SRI management and AWDI as compared to
1.23 g/l from normal planting methods with ordinary water management. In addition, the research outcomes showed a role of
AWDI in minimizing pest and disease incidence, shortening the rice crop cycle, and also improving plant stand until harvest.
Synergistic effects of younger seedlings and wider spacing were seen in tillering ability, panicle length, and number of filled
grains that ultimately led to higher productivity with better grain quality. However, comparatively better crop growth and
yields when using the same SRI practices with ordinary water management underscore a need for further investigations in defining
what constitute optimum wetting and drying intervals considering local soil properties, prevailing climate, and critical watering

Biological and life-cycle information is essential to any fisheries management program. We have investigated temporal changes
in growth parameters in the von Bertalanffy growth curve for green turtles, Chelonia mydas, in waters around the Ogasawara Islands. The variance model of individual variability of growth used in our study was one
derived from the stochastic differential equation with the white noise of constant intensity. Maximum likelihood estimates
of the parameters were made using the data of 102 recovery records of tagging experiments from 1974 to 1995. The estimations
were carried out for each of two models of linear and sudden changes in the parameters, and the best model was selected using
Akaike's information criterion. The selected model was that all of the parameters excepting asymptotic straight carapace length
were linear functions of year and that the asymptotic length was constant over the years. The estimated values of the growth
coefficient in 1974 and 1995 were 0.0317 and 0.192 per year, respectively, and the estimated value of the asymptotic straight
carapace length was 97.2 cm. Implications of the results and future issues to be resolved in near future are discussed. 相似文献

We examined growth of northern shrimp Pandalus eous in the Sea of Japan, off western Hokkaido, to improve estimations of catch-at-age for stock assessment. Multiple length frequency analysis based on length frequency data collected by a scientific research vessel was conducted to examine length-at-age in the shrimp population. Multi-normal distributions estimated using maximum likelihood indicated a good fit to length distributions. AIC values and regression analyses revealed annual growth variation and a decreasing trend in the length at several age classes in the shrimp population. We revised the method for estimating catch-at-age from the age-conversion table (ACT), which is a simple method for age determination, to age–length keys (ALK) calculated from the results of multiple length frequency analysis. Abundant year classes caught successively year after year could be more easily identified from the catch-at-age data computed using ALK than by using ACT. Our results suggested not only that the mean size of commercial landings fluctuated based on changes in age composition but also that a decrease in the length-at-age in the population influenced the consistent size decrease of commercial landings. 相似文献

The paper compiles a catch history of Japanese eels Anguilla japonica in East Asia and some Japanese relative abundance series. Maximum likelihood estimates of stock abundance of eels have been obtained using the abundance series and various biological parameters, such as growth, maturity and natural mortality. Age- and sex-structured models have been used to express the dynamics of stock abundance, and the Beverton and Holt model has been used to express the relationship between stock and recruitment. Data for estimations are standardized catch per unit effort of commercial fishery for exploitable stock (1954–2006 and 1968–2008) and for glass eel (1954–2010, 1972–2004, and 1973–1997). From the results of the base case scenario of estimations, the estimated stock size of individuals aged ≥1 year was 18.7 thousand tons in 2010, which was 24 % of the carrying capacity. The estimated stock size has recovered since 1990. Maximum sustainable yield was 4,180 tons if only the exploitable stock were utilized, and 266 tons if only the glass eel were utilized. These results and issues relating to estimation and management for reducing the fishery impact on stock are discussed. 相似文献

A wireless biosensor system was developed for the continuous measurement of blood glucose levels in flatfish. The biosensor
was implanted in the interstitial fluid under the scleral surface of the eyeball (EISF) to investigate the relationship between
EISF and blood glucose levels. EISF glucose levels were found to be correlated with those in the blood and to be approximately
the same as blood glucose levels in the range of 7–25 mg dl−1. A needle-type biosensor was prepared for the continuous EISF glucose monitoring in flatfish. A working electrode was constructed
using platinum iridium wire, and glucose oxidase was immobilized to the electrode. The biosensor was inserted into the EISF
of flatfish for sensor implantation. A 650-mV potential (vs. Ag/AgCl) was applied by a wireless potentiostat to the working
electrode for the amperometric glucose measurement. We investigated whether glucose in the EISF can be determined in vivo.
The estimated glucose levels using a one-point calibration method were correlated with actual blood glucose levels. In conclusion,
using a wireless biosensor system, we were able to monitor blood glucose levels in flatfish under free-swimming conditions

In Salmonidae, subordinate males are exposed to higher risks of sperm competition than dominant males and thus are expected to improve the sperm characteristics (sperm concentrations, sperm velocity and sperm longevity). In this study, we investigated the relationships between body size and secondary sexual characters (breeding colour, hump height and snout length), and sperm characteristics of one‐year‐old (newly matured) Dolly Varden char. Small males displayed higher sperm concentrations than large males. Moreover, males with dull breeding colours, but not with lesser snout length and hump height, displayed an increased sperm velocity compared to males with bright colours, suggesting a trade‐off between sperm quantity and the investment in breeding colour. In addition, sperm longevity decreased as sperm swimming velocity increased. These findings indicate that small males with dull breeding colours improve the quantity and quality of their sperm to a great extent to enhance their chances of reproductive success. 相似文献

To evaluate the impact of temporal variation of primary productivity on the recruitment of Japanese sardine (Sardinops melanostictus) in the Sea of Japan, the phenology of sea surface phytoplankton abundance was estimated from 8 day multiple satellite (SeaWiFS, MODIS‐Aqua, MERIS, and VIIRS) derived sea surface chlorophyll (SSChl) a concentrations from January 1998 to December 2015. Because relationships between SSChl a and in situ chlorophyll a concentrations were significantly different among periods based on the satellite combinations used, maximum and minimum SSChl a concentrations of 1 year were relativized as 1 and 0, respectively. Spatio‐temporal variation of relativized SSChl a concentrations was determined by using empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. Scores in the first EOF mode denoted the basin‐scale variations of SSChl a concentrations in the Sea of Japan, and the major peak from the end of February to the end of May displayed the spring bloom. The logarithm of recruitment per spawner (LNRPS) for sardine was positively affected by delays in the start and end dates of the spring phytoplankton bloom. The delay of the date of the lowest sea surface temperature contributed to the delay of the end of the spring bloom during the period 1998–2015 and elevated the LNRPS during the period 1982–2015. Sardine spawns in the southern Sea of Japan from April to May, hence, delays of the spring bloom prolonged its overlap with sardine larval periods, and thus improved the recruitment of Japanese sardine in the Sea of Japan. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The aim of this study was to investigate the cause of green liver in red sea bream fed substitute protein diets. Red sea bream Pagrus major was given either of the following diets for 28 weeks: (1) control diet (50% fish meal), (2) low level fish meal diet (15% fish meal), and (3) non-fish meal diet (0% fish meal). The green liver was observed in all groups tested, but the incidence was much higher in the experimental diet groups. The feeding of substitute protein diets reduced plasma triglyceride and cholesterol levels. However, there was no significant difference in plasma hepatic enzyme activities and plasma bile salts concentration among the treatments. Fish fed the substitute protein diets showed low hepatic taurine levels with an appearance of a biliverdin in the liver. Moreover, the proportion of ditaurobilirubin to total biliary bile pigments was significantly lower in fish fed the substitute protein diets. These data indicate that feeding of substitute protein diets did not induce any cholestatic hepatobiliary obstructions and that the low hepatic taurine level was one of the probable factors responsible for the occurrence of green liver in red sea bream fed substitute protein diets. 相似文献
