ObjectiveTo measure trans-diaphragmatic pressures, as an indication of diaphragmatic contractility, in anaesthetized dogs breathing normally, or during inspiratory obstruction (Mueller’s manoeuvre) in order to assess if the method is practicable for use in clinical circumstances.Study designPilot study.AnimalsTwenty eight client-owned dogs, ASA I or II, 1–10 years old, 5–30 kg bodyweight, which required anaesthesia for surgery, and were to be positioned in lateral recumbency.MethodsFollowing a standardized regimen of premedication and anaesthetic induction, anaesthesia was stabilized and maintained with isoflurane. Two commercially available balloon catheters were introduced orally, and advanced, one into the stomach and one into the mid-third of the oesophagus. Oesophageal and gastric pressures were measured from these catheters, and trans-diaphragmatic pressure (Pdi) calculated and recorded continuously. At three separate time points during anaesthesia, for one breath, inspiration was obstructed (Mueller’s manoeuvre) and Pdi was measured.ResultsPlacement of the catheters in the stomach was not easy, and failed in three cases. In five dogs, their size resulted in failure of correct placement of catheters. Good traces of all three pressures reflecting respiratory cycles were obtained from 20 dogs. During normal spontaneous breathing (mean ± SD [range]) Pdi was 5 ± 2.1 (3–10) mmHg. During Mueller’s manoeuvre, Pdi was 14.6 ± 4.5 (9–21) mmHg. Abnormal waveforms were seen included cardiac oscillations (five dogs), inadequate intra-gastric pressure tracing (one dog), deflections with a double peak (one dog), and multiple artifacts when there was increased heart rate and tachypnoea (two dogs in response to surgery).Conclusions and clinical relevanceMeasurement of trans-diaphragmatic pressure with balloon catheters was practicable in suitably sized dogs anaesthetized for clinical purposes and might be a useful tool in the assessment of diaphragmatic function. Paired skin incisions were made in 6 cats and closed intradermally with the copolymer of glycolide, ɛ-caprolacton, and trimethylene-carbonate, or polypropylene suture. The macroscopic and histologic appearance of the incisions was compared. Adverse hot and dry environmental conditions prevailing during the period of oilseed rape ripening can be blamed for considerable yield losses during the crop's mechanized harvesting in the Mediterranean area. In this paper, the effect of chemical dessication of oilseed rape with glyphosate applied 35 days after anthesis for reducing seed yield loss was studied. The experiment was conducted in four fields at two locations in central Greece and for two growth periods following a completely randomized plot design with 8 treatments in three replications. Treatments include all possible combinations of two crop varieties and four levels of glyphosate (as dessicant) application. A significant positive effect of dessicant application level on crop yield for both studied varieties was found. The application dose of 200 g a.i. of glyphosate per hectare had the best results. The highest dry weight was found among the plants sprayed with 200 g. a.i. of glyphosate per hectare. The highest seed yield and oil yield were found among the plants sprayed with 200 g a.i. per hectare, which makes clear the positive effect of this spraying minimizing pod shattering and yield losses. The greatest 1000-seed weight was found among the plants sprayed with 200 g a.i. ha−1, due to the greater size of seeds that remained on the plants until harvesting. 相似文献

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of sowing rates and organic fertilization on growth and yield biomass quality of chia crop. The agronomic performance and nutritive value of chia were analyzed in order to define alternatives to local forages for dry-season feeding of ruminants in the Mediterranean region. Two sowing rates were arranged in the main plots and three levels of organic fertilization in the subplot with three replicates in split-plot design. Chia growth was not affected by sowing rates and fertilization. Concerning the dry weight and leaf area index (LAI), there were no significant differences among fertilization treatments while sowing rates influenced both dry and LAI, which were significantly increased as sowing rates increased. Forage quality traits were not significantly influenced by sowing rates. With regard to crude protein content, fertilization treatments had a positive effect. The greatest values were observed under manure treatment. Moreover, significant increases were revealed in the crude protein yield as sowing rates increased. In addition, acid detergent fiber (ADF) as well as neutral detergent fiber (NDF) were not affected by sowing rates but there were significant differences between fertilization treatments. Data suggest that chia could be successfully used as an alternative forage crop. 相似文献

Ground-level ozone concentrations were estimated for Greece during a summer period of the year 2000 using the regional air quality model UAM-V off-line coupled with the mesoscale meteorological model MM5. An anthropogenic NOx, NMVOCs and CO emission inventory and biogenic NMVOCs emission data were used to support model simulations. The evaluation analysis indicates a quite satisfactory model performance in reproducing ozone levels. The simulated mean ozone concentrations are above the 32-ppb EU phytotoxicity limit over almost all continental and maritime areas of Greece. Over the greater part of the country, the background mean ozone levels range from 40 to 55 ppb. Ozone values higher than the 55-ppb EU human health protection limit reaching 60 ppb dominate part of the southern Aegean Sea that is influenced by the Athens urban plume. In the areas where anthropogenic emission densities are high, the mean ozone levels vary between 20 and 40 ppb. Over the greater part of Greece, the simulated mean daily maximum ozone concentrations range from 50 to 65 ppb. More enhanced maximum ozone concentrations up to 95 ppb mainly dominate over the greater areas of the two largest Greek urban centres (Athens and Thessaloniki) and over the continental and maritime areas south of Athens which are under the influence of the urban plume. 相似文献

Cotton although is an autogamous species could be cross pollinated under favorable climate conditions and/or in the presence of pollinators. The coexistence of cotton with Malvaceae species raises questions on the possibility pollen to be exchanged among Malvaceae species and on the resulted consequences. The present work was undertaken to evaluate the in situ response of cotton flowers (G.hirsutum L, G. barbadense L.) and their F1 interspecific hybrids when are artificially pollinated with Malva sylvestris L., Hibiscus syriacus L. and Abelmoschus esculentus Moench. Furthermore, an in vitro protocol was attempted to support embryos’ growth in order to produce viable progenies originating from crosses between cotton and the aforementioned Malvaceae species. The obtained results gave evidence that pollen from the above Malvaceae species stimulated cotton ovaries without successful hybridization. The interaction between pollen and cotton’s stigmas was higher at early stages when M. sylvestris was used as pollinator but in crosses with H. syriacus and A. esculentus more ovules were activated as revealed by the percentage of carpodesis and life-time of bolls onto maternal plants. Only crosses between cotton with okra produced cotton seeds under in situ conditions. The in vitro embryo-ovule culture protocol, used, increased the number of regenerated cotton plants, especially in crosses among F1 interspecific cotton hybrids and A. esculentus. In this case, regenerated plants were recombinant aneuploids, combining traits from both cotton species. This novel cotton germplasm possessing unique chromosome rearrangements, at aneuploid level could be proved useful after cytogenetic, molecular or QTL genetic analysis referring to important agronomic traits. 相似文献

Potassium (K) is fundamental for plant growth and development but despite the increased quantities of fertilizers applied, incidents of K deficiency are commonly observed. The objective of this study was to record the effects of K deficiency during cotton’s (Gossypium hirsutum L.) early reproductive stage on carbohydrate content and metabolism, total antioxidant capacity and oxidative damage of cotton flower buds as well as the physiology of the leaf, subtending to the flower buds. Growth chamber experiments were conducted using cotton cultivar DP0912 and treatments consisted of normal K and deficient K fertilization for the duration of the experiment. Potassium deficiency resulted in significant oxidative damage in the cotton flower buds, despite the substantial increase in their total antioxidant capacity. Sucrose metabolism of the flower buds was markedly affected resulting in significant reductions in all non-structural carbohydrate concentrations. Furthermore, K deficiency disturbed leaf physiology leading to increased membrane damage, decreases in chlorophyll and carotenoid content and ultimately leaf photosynthetic rates. Concomitant increases in specific leaf weight under K deficient conditions indicated reductions in photoassimilate translocation, which in conjunction with the disruptions observed in flower bud sucrose metabolism, due to the insufficient antioxidant response, resulted in significant decreases in flower bud retention. 相似文献

Press juices (PJs) from seven, mostly underutilized, fish were tested for their anti-oxidative properties. The effects of thermal processing, freezing, and lyophilization of fresh PJs on these properties were investigated. Lyophilized samples were further subjected to in vitro digestion. It was concluded that thermal processing significantly affected only the ferric ions reducing ability, while freezing affected the anti-oxidative properties of only certain species. Lyophilized samples from Dactylopterus volitans and Trachinus draco were able to delay significantly the onset of hemoglobin-mediated oxidation. Finally, the exposure of the PJs to different pH values during in vitro digestion seemed to play an important role in their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)% inhibition ability. 相似文献
