The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is the global leader in publicly-funded maize and wheat research and in farming systems based on these crops. CIMMYT leads the Global Wheat Program (GWP), which includes some of the largest wheat breeding programs in the world. The GWP has been successful in developing wheat germplasm that is used extensively worldwide. Wheat quality improvement is a central component of all the breeding efforts at CIMMYT and the Wheat Chemistry and Quality Laboratory represents an integral part of the breeding programs. Wheat quality is addressed at CIMMYT over the full range of this very wide and variable concept with milling, processing, end-use and nutritional quality targeted. Wheat progenitors and advanced lines developed by the breeders are assessed for diverse quality attributes, with the aim of identifying those that fulfill the requirements in terms of milling, processing, end-use and nutritional quality in different target regions. Significant research is conducted to make more efficient the integration of wheat quality traits in the breeding programs. The main topics being addressed are (1) methodologies to analyze grain quality traits, (2) genetic control and environmental effects on quality traits, (3) characterization of genetic resources for quality improvement, and (4) diversifying grain properties for novel uses.  相似文献

Tan spot caused by Pyrenophora tritici-repentis is the main foliar diseases of wheat in Brazil. The effect of silicon (Si) on the components of resistance of a susceptible (Fundacep Horizonte) and a moderately resistant (Quartzo) wheat cultivar was studied in a controlled environment. Silicon was supplied as calcium silicate in the soil 30 days before sowing. At the booting stage, a conidial suspension of the fungus was sprayed onto the flag leaves of potted plants, which were incubated under moist conditions for 48 h. Afterwards, inoculated leaves were assessed for: incubation period (IP), infection efficiency (IE), area under lesion size curve (AULSC), lesion size (LS), severity (SEV) and area under severity curve (AUSC). Foliar Si concentrations were quantified at the end of the evaluations. Si supply to plants increased leaf Si concentration in 233% for Fundacep Horizonte (from 4.8 to 16.0 g kg?1 of dry matter) and 211% for Quartzo (from 5.3 to 16.5 g kg?1 of dry matter). In the Si + treatments, IP was longer by 24 and 17 h, IE declined by 53.5 and 65.5%, LS (at 264 h after inoculation) by 4.6 mm (from 9.5 to 4.9 mm) and 5.9 mm (from 8.2 to 2.3 mm), and SEV by 53% (from 54.4 to 18.8%) and 88% (from 47.7 to 5.5%) respectively, for the Fundacep Horizonte and Quartzo cultivars. The Si x cultivar interaction was not significant for AULSC and AUSC, and these variables were reduced by 55.8 and 80.8%, respectively, in plants supplied with Si. In conclusion, Si enhanced the resistance of wheat plants to tan spot development by affecting several resistance components, regardless of the resistance level of the cultivar. However, the greatest reduction in tan spot development by Si supply was observed when using a moderately resistant cultivar.  相似文献

Potato virus Y (PVY) is the type-species of the genus Potyvirus, family Potyviridae, being reported as a major tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) pathogen in several regions of the world. Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV) was originally described as a resistance-breaking Potato virus Y (PVY) isolate on Capsicum annuum L. cultivars, and afterwards it was also reported infecting tomatoes in Brazil. In the present work, a search for sources of resistance to both PepYMV and PVY was conducted in a collection of 119 accessions belonging to seven Solanum (section Lycopersicon) species. This germplasm was initially evaluated to PepYMV reaction by mechanical inoculation followed by symptom observations and ELISA. Potential PepYMV resistance sources were identified for the first time in S. habrochaites, S. peruvianum, S. corneliomuelleri, S. chilense, S. pimpinellifolium, and one accession derived from an interspecific cross (S. lycopersicum x S. peruvianum). A sub-group of 24 accessions with negative serology for PepYMV was also challenged with a PVY isolate, followed by serological and molecular detection with universal primers. Solanum habrochaites ‘L.03683’ and ‘L.03684’ were the only accessions found with stable resistance to both viruses. These results confirm S. habrochaites as the most important source of multiple resistance factor(s) to distinct Potyvirus species.  相似文献

Genetic diversity is one of the most important issues in studies on conservation of cattle breeds and endangered species. The objective of this study was to estimate the levels of genetic differentiation between locally adapted taurine (Bos taurus taurus) and zebu (Bos taurus indicus) breeds in Brazil, which were genotyped for more than 777,000 SNPs. The fixation index (F ST), principal component analysis (PCA), and Bayesian clustering were estimated. The F ST highlighted genetic differentiation between taurine and zebu breeds. The taurine lines, Caracu and Caracu Caldeano, had significant genetic differentiation (F ST close to 5%) despite their recent selection for different uses (meat and milk). This genetic variability can be used for conservation of locally adapted animals, as well as for breeding programs on zebu breeds. Introgression of zebu in locally adapted breeds was identified, especially in Curraleiro Pé-Duro breed. The Gyr breed, however, had low breed purity at genomic level due to its very heterogeneous mixing pattern.  相似文献

Hazardous practices regarding antibiotics misuse, unsanitary milking procedures, and the commercial sales of raw milk and unpasteurized dairy products are currently being practiced by livestock farmers in the Sumapaz region (Colombia). The purpose of this study was to screen for food-borne and zoonotic pathogens associated with local livestock practices. We evaluated 1098 cows from 46 livestock farms in the Sumapaz region that were selected by random. Of the total population of cattle, 962 animals (88%) were tested for bovine TB using a caudal-fold tuberculin test and 546 (50%) for brucellosis by a competitive ELISA. In the population tested, 23 cows were positive for Brucella sp. representing a 4.2% seroprevalence and no cases of bovine tuberculosis were found. In addition, food-borne contamination with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus was assessed together with antibiotic susceptibility for ten different antibiotics in milk samples from 16 livestock farms. We found that 12 of the farms (75%) were contaminated with these food-borne pathogens. Noteworthy, all of the isolated pathogenic strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics, primarily to oxytetracycline and erythromycin. Our findings suggest that livestock products could be a source of exposure to Brucella and multidrug-resistant E. coli and S. aureus strains as a result of unhygienic livestock practices in the Sumapaz region. Training in good farming practices is the key to improving safety in food production.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that lead to variation in the timing of breeding in widespread species such as red deer (Cervus elaphus) is crucial to predict possible responses of wild populations to different climate scenarios. Here, we sought to further understand the causes of inter‐annual variation in the reproduction timing of female deer in Mediterranean environments. An integrative approach was used to identify the relative importance of individual, population and climate traits in the date of conception of free‐ranging deer, based on a dataset of 829 hinds culled during 12 years. We found that a population trait, density, was the most important factor explaining the variation in conception dates, with greater densities causing later conception dates. Body mass was the second in importance, with heavier females conceiving earlier than lighter ones. Almost equally important was the spring real bioclimatic index, a measure of plant productivity, causing later conception dates in the least productive springs (drier and hotter). Another climatic component, the end of summer drought, showed that the sooner the autumn arrives (greater rainfalls and cooler temperatures) the earlier the conception dates. Interestingly, age class was found to be a minor factor in determining conception date. Only older females (≥10 years old) conceived significantly later, suggesting reproductive senescence. This study highlights not only the importance of population and individual traits but also the influence of climatic parameters on the deer reproductive cycle in Mediterranean environments, giving valuable insight into how reproductive phenology may respond to seasonality and global climate changes.  相似文献

Inheritance of the resistance to nematodes has been studied on many different crops, however to our knowledge, no data are available for guava species. The basic genetic resistance parameters to Meloidogyne enterolobii are estimated in the current research in order to guide the development of genotypes resistant to the pathogen. The parental plants, F1 and F2 from a Psidium guajava x P. guineense cross were assessed for the presence or absence of galls and for the number of eggs and juveniles in the root system at the 120th and 240th days after inoculation with 10,000 eggs and juveniles of the nematode. At the age of nine years, the P. guineense plant remained without nematode attack symptoms, whereas the maternal plant was destroyed by the pathogen. The F1 generation showed 270 plants with reproduction factor (RF) <0.322, and there were tiny galls in only 16 plants. The segregation for the presence or absence of galls in the root system in generation F2 was 9:7, wherein the χ2 values were 0.78 and 2.66, respectively, at the 120th and 240th days after inoculation, whereas the segregation for RF was 15:1, wherein the χ2 values were 2.76 and 1.18, respectively, at the 120th and 240th days. These results indicate epistatic interaction between two genes: in RF < 1 only one allele sets the resistance to the pathogen. The broad sense heritability of RF, estimated to the two assessments was 0.97, and it also indicates a simple inheritance of resistance to M. enterolobii.  相似文献

A 9-month lab experiment was carried out with three different amendments (vine pruning wastes, PW; composted vine pruning wastes, cPW; and sewage sludge, SS) added at three different rates (90, 180, and 240 t ha?1, dry weight) in order to test whether the type or the quantity of the amendments applied to a semiarid, degraded soil determined the Corg accumulation in its particle-size fractions (coarse sand, 200–2,000 µm; fine sand, 63–200 µm; silt, 2–63 µm; and clay, 0.1–2 µm). All amendments, independently of their C/N ratios, resulted in similar Corg content and accumulation in coarse sand and silt-sized fractions after 9 months. In the clay-sized fraction, enrichment in Corg produced the incorporation of particles from this particle-size fraction into the silt-sized fraction. Likewise, increasing the application rates of the amendments led to larger Corg contents into the particle-size fractions of all amended soils except for the clay-sized fraction. The application of SS resulted in lower basal respiration-to-Corg ratios in the clay-sized fraction than the application of PW and cPW, suggesting a higher protection of the Corg in the SS treatment. These results indicate that organic amendments from woody plants with C/N ratios higher than 30, such as PW, favor Corg accumulation in the fine sand-sized fractions. Furthermore, our findings suggest that the application rate of such amendments, rather than the C/N ratios and amendment origin (from sludge or woody plants), is the key factor for promoting Corg accumulation in the silt-sized fractions of semiarid degraded soils.  相似文献
