In the southwest part of the Iberian Peninsula the dominant land-use are the Portuguese montados and Spanish dehesas, parkland
forested areas of anthropogenic origin dominated by cork oak. They form a wooded matrix with open areas, scattered woodlands
and undisturbed patches of Mediterranean forest and scrublands. The montados are characterized by a rich bird community. We
have focus our study in a multidisciplinary approach, evaluating how management and landscape patterns influence the bird
community in order to identify potential threats to its conservation. The study was conducted in the Site of Community Importance
of Serra de Monfurado were 70% of the area is cork and holm oaks. We used data from 120 10-min point counts. Using variation
partitioning, we determined the independent and joint effects of Forest, Management and Habitat variables. The variation captured
in bird assemblage was 65.06%. Most of the explained variation was related to the Habitat and Management variables. The explanatory
variables that were high-lighted as important predictors were variables that reflected tree and shrub density and cork removal.
Modelling for forest species through generalized linear models (GLM) emphasize that the management plays an important role
in the species distribution. The most important variables selected in models reflected cattle grazing and cork removal. Our
results point out that the type of management is crucial to maintain the equilibrium in bird community associated to montados.
Farmland and forest species will benefit from areas with different tree densities, small patches of Mediterranean scrubs in
the understory and correct livestock numbers. 相似文献

Adelgids (Hemiptera) in the genus Pineus have been reported as introduced insect pests causing serious losses to Pinus plantations worldwide. In 2008, Pineus boerneri was recorded for the first time in Colombia, with infestations noted on Pinus kesiya, P. tecunumanii, P. maximinoi and P. oocarpa. The lack of information on this insect in Colombia prompted investigations of its life cycle and infestation levels as well as host susceptibility of the main Pinus species planted in Colombia. In addition, the possibility of using a Ceraeochrysa species, an already established predator of adelgids in Colombia, for biological control was considered. Results showed that Pineus boerneri in Colombia has an anholocyclic life cycle comprised of four instars with a complete duration of between 49 and 97 d. Infestations were higher in the middle and upper part of trees. Pinus kesiya and P. maximinoi had the highest levels of susceptibility in field as well as in greenhouse trials. A survey of naturally infested trees showed P. tecunumanii to be moderately susceptible, whereas P. patula and P. oocarpa had low levels of susceptibility in a greenhouse trial but were not susceptible in the field. Investigations considering the impact of predation of Ceraeochrysa species showed a high predation rate of up to 140 P. boerneri consumed per day by a single Ceraeochrysa individual. The amount of photosynthetic radiation intercepted by a crop is a function of the incident solar radiation on the plants, the leaf area index (L AI), and the light extinction coefficient (k). We quantified L AI and k in stands of black wattle (Acacia mearnsii De Wild.) over a 7-year growth cycle at two locations in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Our study was conducted in commercial stands in agroecological regions with high densities of black wattle plantations. L AI was calculated as the ratio between the leaf area of a tree and its planting space, and k was derived from Beer’s law. L AI depends on the planting site and stand age. Between the two sites, the L AI was similar over time, the amount of variation differed. Values of k depended only on stand age, with the highest average observed for stands up to 5 years old. The trend of k during the plantation cycle was inversely proportional to L AI and was correlated with L AI, leaf area, leaf dry mass, canopy volume, height, branches dry mass, total dry mass, and crown diameter. 相似文献

Pinus pinaster wood samples, obtained at different positions of three healthy trees, were subjected to two sequential extractions using an Accelerated Solvent Extraction instrument. The first extraction was carried out with hexane (to remove lipophilic extractives) and the second one with acetone/water (95:5 v/v) to recover bioactive phenolic compounds, the target compounds of this study. The extracted fractions were assayed for total yield and composition. The extracts contained a spectrum of phenolic compounds (simple phenolics, phenolic stilbenes, flavonoids and lignans) and non-phenolic components (juvabiones, resin and fatty acids, steryl esters and triglycerides). This work studied the participation of ascorbic acid (AA) in the dormancy establishment of apical buds of poplar (Populus deltoides Bartram ex Marshall cv. Catfish 2) lateral branches. AA content was highest during the active growth period and decreased to the lowest content during bud dormancy. The accumulation of the oxidised form, dehydroascorbate, was similar in either growth or dormant bud stages. The supplementation of buds with AA at the end of the summer delayed bud set. Similarly, the supplementation of buds with gibberellic acid extended the growth period and kept a high AA content in the apoplast. These results suggest that a decrease in the accumulation of reduced AA might be needed for the dormancy establishment in apical buds of poplar lateral branches. 相似文献

The current expansion of the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in the Brazilian Amazon has mainly occurred within smallholder agricultural and degraded areas. Under the social and environmental scenarios associated with these areas, oil palm-based agroforestry systems represent a potentially sustainable method of expanding the crop. The capacity of such systems to store carbon (C) in the soil is an important ecosystem service that is currently not well understood. Here, we quantified the spatial variation of soil C stocks in young (2.5-year-old) oil palm-based agroforestry systems with contrasting species diversity (high vs. low); both systems were compared with a ~10-year-old forest regrowth site and a 9-year-old traditional agroforestry system. The oil palm-based agroforestry system consisted of series of double rows of oil palm and strips of various herbaceous, shrub, and tree species. The mean (±standard error) soil C stocks at 0–50 cm depth were significantly higher in the low (91.8 ± 3.1 Mg C ha?1) and high (87.6 ± 3.3 Mg C ha?1) species diversity oil palm-based agroforestry systems than in the forest regrowth (71.0 ± 2.4 Mg C ha?1) and traditional agroforestry (68.4 ± 4.9 Mg C ha?1) sites. In general, no clear spatial pattern of soil C stocks could be identified in the oil palm-based agroforestry systems. The significant difference in soil carbon between the oil palm area (under oil palm: 12.7 ± 2.3 Mg C ha?1 and between oil palm: 10.6 ± 0.5 Mg C ha?1) and the strip area (17.0 ± 1.4 Mg C ha?1) at 0–5 cm depth very likely reflects the high input of organic fertilizer in the strip area of the high species diversity oil palm-based agroforestry system treatment. Overall, our results indicate a high level of early net accumulation of soil C in the oil palm-based agroforestry systems (6.6–8.3 Mg C ha?1 year?1) that likely reflects the combination of fire-free land preparation, organic fertilization, and the input of plant residues from pruning and weeding. 相似文献

Genetic progress through selection is directly related to the amount of variability present in the population and the quality
of genes contributed by the parents. Genetic relationships between lines were studied using DNA marker-based estimates of
genetic similarity. A statistical methodology using the width of a confidence interval was developed to determine the number
of probes to be surveyed and the precision in the estimation of genetic distance between pairs of cultivars. Precision was
affected by type of genetic distance used, the number of cultivars, and amount of genetic diversity present in the studied
group. The width of a (1-α)% confidence interval decreased as the number of RFLP fragments increased. Oat and wheat diversity
studies were used to illustrate the methodology.

RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) technology was applied to analyze the genetic variability of sweet potato germplasm
existing in Chile and elsewhere. Analysis of 28 cultivars from all over the world showed polymorphic bands with all 18 primers
tested. A total of 124 RAPD bands were scored with an average of 6.9 polymorphic bands per primer. These results confirm that
sweet potato exhibits high genetic variation. Two groups were distinguished: one containing Peruvian cultivars, and another
containing cultivars from the rest of the world. Analysis of 14 accessions from Central Chile and one from Northern Chile
showed polymorphic bands with 24 of 26 primers tested, but almost all of the 140 polymorphic bands merely showed the distinctness
of the Northern accession. The almost complete uniformity of the other 14 accessions shows that sweet potato germplasm collected
in Central Chile has very little genetic variability and may be derived from a single cultivar.
Based on these results and on historical records, some hypotheses are proposed to explain the origin of sweet potatoes cultivated
in Chile.

Drip irrigation systems are prone to changes in flow rate (FR) and increasing coefficients of variation (CV) when fed with treated wastewater, due to fouling inside the drippers. A model system was designed to measure the FR and fouling accumulation in laterals and drippers under different treatment conditions. A novel approach was taken to compare the different maintenance treatments. A comparison of chlorination and acidification strategies showed that daily chlorination and periodic acidification may prolong proper functioning of the drippers by maintaining a normal FR [(up to ±7 %) of nominal FR] and CV (<7 %) index in correlation with low fouling accumulation in the pipeline (<0.01 mg deposit/cm pipe 2 ). Current recommendations for the frequency of conventional treatments were found to be insufficient. Chemical analyses of the fouling inside the dripper and accumulated on the pipe wall showed that biofilm can survive inside the dripper under harsh environmental conditions, even when the pipeline stays clean. These results shed light on biofilm growth and survival mechanisms inside the dripper and may pave the way to developing new treatments or improving dripper design. 相似文献
