ABSTRACT

Regardless of variable environmental conditions and changing pathogen populations, the Estonian potato cultivar (cv.) Ando has shown elevated field resistance to Phytophthora infestans for over 40 years. One of cv. Ando’s parents, the Latvian cultivar Agra, is considered a cultivar of medium to low resistance, the other parent, line 382-48, has a well-known source of resistance, Solanum demissum, in its pedigree. Segregation of late blight disease severity in a population of 95 hybrid plants from cv. Ando’s backcross to cv. Agra (cv. Ando x cv. Agra BC1) in field trials of three consecutive years (2013?2015) and in a test of a single pathogen isolate fits a model of additive action of multiple unlinked race-specific resistance genes responsible for the field resistance of cv. Ando. At least some of the resistance genes in cv. Ando’s genome do not function in juvenile plants and are developmentally upregulated.  相似文献

Abstract

An instrument for measurement of soil dielectric constant ε r , electrical conductivity EC a, and soil temperature was tested on soils under potato crop to investigate contents of soil volumetric water θ and nutrients for eventual use in a field crop model.

To approximate the dependence of θ on ε r , a logarithmic equation was chosen. Satisfactory results were obtained on stone-free areas, with the mean relative variance between θ-values determined by dielectric constant and converted from a gravimetric method remaining within the limits of measuring error. However, variances were higher for stony soils, with ε r -values at the same θ being considerably higher. To reconcile data from stony and stone-free soils, a formula was composed.

Salinity, calculated by a semi-empirical model based on Hilhorst's theory using measured values of EC a, ε r , and soil temperature, correlated well with contents of K and Mg in the soil. A lower correlation resulted for P, and was practically absent for Ca. Inequality of these regression equations at different measuring sites demonstrates the necessity of considering soil pH when assessing plant nutrients in the soil.  相似文献

Abstract

Plant-available P was first extracted in soils 114 years ago and a number of different analytical methods have since been developed, but for good reasons none of these methods has been adopted as a standard for all soils. With increasing cooperation within research, there is a need to harmonise the interpretation of analytical data for fertiliser recommendations, research, and environmental control. This paper evaluates the compatibility of the Swedish standard ammonium lactate (PAL) method and the widely used Olson's sodium bicarbonate (POls) method in 82 topsoil samples taken from Swedish long-term soil fertility field trials. The PAL-values were usually larger than POls, with a mean PAL/POls quotient of 2.30±1.04 (0.67–6.58). The PAL and POls means and ranges were 126±89 (5–360) and 55.1±33 (3.1–122.8) mg P kg?1 dry soil, respectively. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between PAL and POls and how this relationship was affected by clay content, pH, and soil organic carbon content (SOC). After statistical transformation, it emerged that the square root of clay content (17.4%±13.82, range 1–54.4) and pH (6.45±0.54, range 5.5–7.7) significantly affected the relationship at partial R 2-values of 2 and 12%, respectively, while ln(SOC) (2.54%±1.21, range 1–6.03) did not, apparently due the narrow range. The regressions of predicted vs. measured values explained 95 and 94% of the variation in PAL and POls, respectively. The mean deviation of predicted compared with measured values was 21.3 and 8.3 mg P kg?1 dry soil for PAL and POls, respectively, corresponding to 20 or 19% of the measured values. We conclude that a data set consisting of PAL-values can be converted into POls-values and vice versa with reasonably high accuracy when accounting for clay content and pH.  相似文献

Reduced tillage is proposed as a method of C sequestration in agricultural soils. However, tillage effects on organic matter turnover are often contradictory and data are lacking on how tillage practices affect soil respiration in northern Europe. This field study (1) quantified the short-term effects of different tillage methods and timing on soil respiration and N mineralisation and (2) examined changes in aggregate size distribution due to different tillage operations and how these relate to soil respiration. The study was conducted on Swedish clay soil (Eutric Cambisol) and compared no-tillage with three forms of tillage applied in early or late autumn 2010: mouldboard ploughing to 20–22 cm and chisel ploughing to 12 or 5 cm depth. Soil respiration, soil temperature, gravimetric water content, mineral N and aggregate size distribution were measured. The results showed that respiration was significantly higher (P?<?0.001) in no-till than in tilled plots during the 2 weeks following tillage in early September. Later tillage gave a similar trend but treatments did not differ significantly. Soil tillage and temperature explained 56 % of the variation in respiration. In the early tillage treatment, soil respiration decreased with tillage depth. Mineral N status was not affected by tillage treatment or timing. Soil water content did not differ significantly between tillage practices and therefore did not explain differences in respiration. The results indicate that conventional tillage in early autumn may reduce short-term soil respiration compared with chisel ploughing and no-till in clay soils in northern Europe.  相似文献

Compatible rhizobia strains are essential for nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) of hairy vetch (Vicia villosa Roth, HV). We evaluated how past HV cultivation affected nodulation and BNF across host genotypes. Five groups of similar HV genotypes were inoculated with soil dilutions from six paired fields, three with 10-year HV cultivation history (HV+) and three with no history (HV?), and used to determine efficiency of rhizobia nodulation and BNF. Nodulation was equated to nodule number and mass, BNF to plant N and Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar viceae (Rlv) soil cell counts using qPCR to generate an amplicon of targeted Rlv nodD genes. Both HV cultivation history and genotype affected BNF parameters. Plants inoculated with HV+ soil dilutions averaged 60 and 70 % greater nodule number and mass, respectively. Such plants also had greater biomass and tissue N than those inoculated with HV? soil. Plant biomass and tissue N were strongly correlated to nodule mass (r 2?=?0.80 and 0.50, respectively), while correlations to nodule number were low (r 2?=?0.50 and 0.31, respectively). Although hairy vetch rhizobia occur naturally in soils, past cultivation of HV was shown in this study to enhance nodulation gene-carrying Rlv population size and/or efficiency of rhizobia capable of nodulation and N fixation.  相似文献

Direct uptake and rapid decrease of organic nitrogen by Wollemia nobilis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Organic nitrogen (N) can be directly taken up by many plants, particularly under low-temperature and N-limited conditions. The natural environment of Wollemia nobilis, shady conditions and shallow, acidic soils with high organic matter, led to the hypothesis that organic N might be a potential N source, although this species is living in a subtropical area. A pot experiment was carried out to investigate whether W. nobilis seedlings have the capability to take up intact organic N and whether the uptake of organic N contributes significantly to N acquisition for W. nobilis. Three 15N-labeled N forms, ammonium (NH4-N), nitrate (NO3-N), or glycine, were injected into soils separately, and the tissues of plants were then harvested 6 and 48 h after injection. Our results demonstrated that W. nobilis, a subtropical species, has the capability to take up intact glycine as indicated by the enrichment of 13C and 15N in fine roots at a nearly 1:1 ratio. The uptake rate of glycine-N was faster than that of inorganic N, but which was only restricted in the short term (6 h). The absorbed glycine-N reduced quickly (in 48 h), indicating that organic N uptake did not contribute greatly to N acquisition for W. nobilis.  相似文献

Increased recycling of organic wastes has raised concern about the quality of compost end products. In addition to the limit values for heavy metals and impurities including weeds and pathogens, the quality criteria for compost products should also include criteria for maturity. There is a tremendous number of maturity assays, developed earlier by several authors, and recommended to be used to evaluate maturity of composts. Because no such single test alone reliably demonstrates the complex properties occurring during maturization of compost, we developed a fast and easy-to-use two-phase test scheme for the assessment of maturity. In the first phase the degradation phase e.g. stability of compost samples is evaluated by using a carbon dioxide evolution test and/or determination of the NO3-N/NH4-N ratio by simple test strips. In the second phase, the toxicity of the compost is evaluated by a plant growth test, germination tests and/or the Flash bioluminescence test. Eleven plants composting sewage sludge, source-separated biowaste, manure or a combination of these raw materials were sampled after 1-3 weeks of composting and when the compost was considered “ready for use”. Chemical and physical analyses were considered useful as additional information when evaluating maturity especially when the results were not conclusively clear. This fast and easy-to-use test scheme was designed especially for the composting plant operators and official laboratories responsible for evaluating compost quality.  相似文献

School ground greening might provide multiple benefits for children across age, gender and competence through allowing participation in the greening process and experience of nature and vegetation. However, the process of school ground greening must nurture a positive relationship between children and newly planted vegetation during the first years after establishment. This study explored how green space planning, management and maintenance approaches influence children's school ground use and experiences through a series of field observations following establishment of new vegetation in a landscaped area at a school in Malmö, Sweden. The methods included documentation of vegetation, observations of use and interviews with children and teachers on three occasions during one and a half years following the first planting. The greening approach appeared successful, especially for younger children (up to around 11 years), who were more positive and also used the area more than older children. They also used it for pretend play, which was rare in the school ground before greening. Experiences from continuous participation and physical use appeared important for children establishing a positive and caring relationship with the landscaped area. The results suggest that school ground greening should be well integrated with pedagogic activities. Damage to woody vegetation can be limited by establishing other landscape elements that are attractive for play and by using fences without hindering access.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to test whether fragmentation or recreational use affect tree regeneration in urban forests, and to quantify these effects. We sampled tree saplings at different distances from edges in spruce (Picea abies) dominated forests, and at different distances from paths that represented different levels of wear. Generalized linear mixed models were used to test our hypotheses. We found that fragmentation favours the regeneration of deciduous trees in urban spruce dominated forests: distance from the edge had a pronounced effect on regeneration, at least up to 80 m into the forests. Saplings of Betula pendula, Populus tremula, other deciduous species and Pinus sylvestris benefited from edge conditions. Betula pubescens saplings, however, were most abundant in the interior and small Sorbus aucuparia saplings at 25–30 m from the edge. All species suffered from the direct effects of trampling, while varying responses of species to distance from the paths were observed up to 6 m, and possibly further. As trees essentially define the living conditions for other forest species, we suggest that the spatial extent of edge and trampling effects should be studied for different types of forests. This knowledge should then be used in urban forestry and planning to define the threshold value that will allow for at least some “intact” interior. We suggest a diameter larger than 160 m to support indigenous species in boreal spruce dominated forests.  相似文献
