A prospective epidemiological survey on bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) infections in calves was carried out on 21 dairy farms during one BRSV epidemic season. Special attention was paid to the role of maternal antibodies. On 15 farms the spread of the virus was demonstrated during the investigation period and on eight farms this was accompanied by an outbreak of acute respiratory disease. Disease seldom occurred in calves younger than two weeks old and the most severe disease was observed in calves from one to three months old. Although maternal antibodies did not effectively prevent the disease, both the incidence and severity of disease were inversely related to the level of specific maternal antibodies. Two serodiagnostic techniques were compared. In calves older than three months from herds with disease outbreaks associated with bovine respiratory syncytial virus the diagnosis was established in 80 per cent of the animals by an increase in IgG titre against BRSV and in 77 per cent by the detection of BRSV specific IgM. In comparison, only 10 per cent of the calves younger than three months were positive by IgG serodiagnosis, and 51 per cent by IgM serodiagnosis. On farms where the spread of the virus was accompanied by an outbreak of clinical disease more calves were present, a higher proportion of the calves was younger than three months, and calves of all ages were more often housed together.  相似文献

Male Albino rats (weighing 90-100 gms) were fed ad libitum for 14 days with limited periods of access to food. Powdered whole egg (V), fish meal (F), yeats (H), and gelatine (10% protein in dry matter) used as protein sources. Additionally, one group of rats received a protein-free (e). Radioactive tracers were administered by intragastric infusion of 25 mu Ci 3H glycine and 5 mu Ci 14C L-leucine per 100 gm of body weight 2 hrs after the feeding of 2 gm of the experimental diet per 100 gms of body weight. The level of uptake of radioactive tracers from the different sections of the gastro-intestinal tract was measurels of 3H and 14C labelling in intestinal tissues were observed 3 hrs and 7 hrs after infusion. The level of 14C labelling was found to be negatively correlated and the level of 3H labelling was positively correlated with the biological value of the diet. Intestinal tissues are capable of storing considerable amounts of 14C radioactivity. So, 72 hrs after infusion, the following levels of 14C radioactivity (expressed as percentage of the total dose of radioactivity) were found in tissues of the gastro-intestinal tract: whole egg: 8.4%, fish meal: 9.6%, yeast: 13.1%, gelatine: 14.9%; protein-free diet; 14.2%. The quotients correlating the levels of radioactivity from the intestinal contents with that found in the intestinal wall suggest that the walls of the small intestine possess a high capacity for absorption. At all times of radioactive measurements the walls of the small intestine were found to contain higher levels of both 14C and 3H radioactivity than the contents of small intestine.  相似文献

Growing male rats received diets of varying biological value (protein sources: powdered whole egg (V); fish meal (F); yeast (H); gelatine (G); protein-free diet (e)) for a 14-day feeding period. Subsequently, 14C leucine and 3H glycine were administered intragastrically. The level of uptake of 14C and 3H radioactivity into blood plasma, liver and muscular tissue and the rate of incorporation of the radioactive tracers into the proteins of these tissues was examined. A negative correlation was found to exist between the incorporation of radioactivity into liver proteins and the biological value of dietary proteins, the former being mainly dependent on the level of incorporation into the liver. For muscular proteins the rate of incorporation decreases with the decreasing biological value of the dietary proteins. This may be attributed to the fact that with poor protein nutrition the rate of protein synthesis in the skeletal muscles is also reduced. Comparative studies on the specific 14C radioactivity from free leucine made in the group on the protein-free diet and in the group receiving the whole egg diet showed that the leucine pool of the skeletal muscles was markedly redueced in animals fed a protein-deficient diet while the leucine pool in the liver remained comparatively constant.  相似文献

Congenital portosystemic venous shunt causing signs of hepatic encephalopathy was diagnosed in 7 cats. The left gastric vein served as the shunt in four of these. Increases in blood ammonia and postprandial serum bile acids were the most consistent serum biochemical abnormalities. Excessive variation in red blood cell shape was a common but nonspecific hematologic finding. The jejunal-mesenteric venous injection of contrast material was the preferred method of portography to diagnose portosystemic shunts. Two cats were treated successfully by partial surgical occlusion of their shunts.  相似文献

Ten American river otters (Lutra canadensis) were evaluated clinically before release into Oklahoma waterways. Otters were immobilized for physical, radiographic, and electrocardiographic examinations and for collection of blood samples. Hematologic and serum biochemical analyses, urinalyses, parasitologic examinations, surgical omental biopsies, and necropsy findings were included. Respiratory tract disease, bacterial and parasitic infections, and starvation apparently were contributing causes of postrelease mortality in 4 of the otters.  相似文献

In 2005, the final phase of terrestrial rabies eradication in Germany was put at risk by a severe setback due to re-introduction of the disease in Rhineland-Palatinate from neighbouring Hesse after seven years of absence. The rapid westward spread of the disease prompted veterinary authorities to react swiftly and apply a new yet unproven vaccination strategy to rapidly increase herd immunity in an almost unprotected fox population to stop the epidemic. The cornerstones of this emergency oral rabies vaccination strategy, i. e. vaccination intervals, identification of high risk spots, real time epidemiological assessment, capable to eliminate rabies within 13 months after incursion are described here. This strategy may be used as a template to tackle similar emergency situations in Europe in the future.  相似文献

 Field studies on microbial populations and their activity in soil and litter layers of different sites revealed statistically significant correlations with climatic factors, soil characteristics and the number of terrestrial isopods (Isopoda: Oniscidea). The number of captured Porcellio scaber was negatively correlated with the density of soil microbiota, but positively correlated with both respiration and cellulolytic activity of litter-colonizing microorganisms. By contrast, the number of Oniscus asellus was positively correlated with soil microbial density and respiration, and cellulolytic and respiratory activity of the litter. These interspecific differences were unexpected between species that frequently occur sympatrically, and, thus, probably have similar ecological requirements. Hence, the results suggested species-specific interactions of these species with soil and litter-colonizing microbiota. However, further field studies are required to prove this. Selection of oat genotypes combining earliness and short plant height could stimulate oat cultivation worldwide. However, the mechanisms involved with the genetic control of heading date and plant height traits are not fully understood to date. This study aimed to identify genomic regions controlling heading date and plant height in two hulled by naked oat populations and to compare these genomic regions with that of other grass species. Recombinant inbred lines of each population and their parents were genotyped by a 6 K BeadChip Illumina Infinium array and assessed for heading date and plant height in two sowing dates. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting these traits were detected by simple interval mapping. The two oat populations showed different genetic mechanisms controlling heading date. A major QTL was identified in one of the populations, mapped into the ‘Mrg33’ consensus linkage group from the current oat map. Two other QTL were detected into the ‘Mrg02’ and ‘Mrg24’ groups, in the second population. On the other hand, both populations presented the same genomic region controlling plant height. Six SNP markers, mapping on the same linkage group within each population, were associated with the trait, regardless the sowing date, explaining more than 20% of the phenotypic variation. Five of these six markers were mapped into three different linkage groups on the oat consensus map. Genomic regions associated with heading date and plant height in oat seem to be conserved in Oryza sativa L. and Brachypodium distachyon. Our results provide valuable information for marker-assisted selection in oats, allowing selection for earliness and plant height on early segregating generations.  相似文献
