- 1. The Doñana wetland complex (SW Spain) holds more wintering waterfowl than any other wetland in Europe.
- 2. This study focused on the use made by 12 common waterbirds (eight ducks and four waders) of the natural seasonal marshes in Doñana National Park (DNP) and the adjacent Veta la Palma (VLP) fish ponds created in the early 1990s. Data used were from aerial and terrestrial surveys collected between October and February during six consecutive winters from 1998/99 to 2003/04. Changes in distribution of each bird taxon were related to changes in the extent of flooded marshes within DNP. Up to 295 000 ducks were counted in VLP during dry periods, and up to 770 000 in DNP when it was flooded.

The timing and extent of flooding in DNP was highly variable, but there was a consistent pattern in which ducks concentrated in VLP during dry months and winters but redistributed to DNP as more of it was flooded. This refuge effect was also strong for black‐tailed godwits Limosa limosa, but much less so for other waders. Waders feed mainly on invertebrates, and invertebrate biomass in VLP was found to be higher than in DNP. Ducks feed mainly on seeds and plant material, which are more abundant in DNP when flooded.

When water levels in DNP were stable over the course of a winter, or controlled for in multivariate models, the numbers of ducks at VLP declined over time, probably due to reduced availability of plant foods. In contrast, numbers of waders at VLP were more stable, and their invertebrate prey became more abundant over time, at least in the winter 2003/4.
- 5. In this extremely important wetland complex, the value of natural and artificial wetlands for wintering waterbirds are complementary, providing suitable habitat for different species and for different conditions in a highly variable Mediterranean environment.

The effect of supplemented commercial diets with crystalline l-tryptophan (TRP—5, 10 and 20 g TRP kg?1) on cannibalism, survival and growth parameters of pikeperch post-larvae (Sander lucioperca) was evaluated. Fifteen-day-old pikeperch larvae (mean weight—6.8 mg) were reared during the next 28 days (20.5 °C, 16L:8D) in glass aquaria in a recirculating aquaculture system. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay showed that TRP-supplemented diets were effective in increasing the levels of serotonin (5-HT) in the body tissue of pikeperch. TRP supplementation resulted in a slight decrease in both types of cannibalism, although the reduction in cannibalism impact did not amount to more than a few percent. TRP treatment had no significant influence on the final survival of pikeperch post-larvae (ranged from 20.1 ± 12.4 to 29.0 ± 12.9 %). However, contrary to the earlier studies conducted on other fish species, no significant difference in the growth rates and feeding behavior of pikeperch between TRP-fed and control group were found. The final body weight and growth rate ranged from 0.211 ± 0.014 to 0.243 ± 0.016 and from 12.19 ± 0.38 to 12.76 ± 0.35 % day?1, respectively. The effect of sodium and potassium concentrations as well as optimal pH on the motility of common carp Cyprinus carpio L. sperm during short-term storage in artificial seminal plasma (ASP) was investigated. Sperm was collected from individual males (n?=?5) and each sample diluted tenfold (1:9) in ASP (sperm:extender) containing 2 mM CaCl2, 1 mM Mg2SO4 and 20 mM Tris at pH 8.0 and supplemented by the following concentrations of sodium and potassium (mM/mM): 0/150, 20/130, 40/110, 75/75, 110/40, 130/20 and 150/0. The osmolality of all ASP variants was set at 310 mOsm kg?1. Sperm motility was measured using a CASA system during 72 h of storage. Immediately after dilution, sperm motility was high (90%) both in each variant and in the control group (fresh sperm). After 72-h storage, the highest sperm motility was noted in ASP containing 110 mM NaCl and 40 mM KCl. No differences were found in the motility of samples preserved within the pH range of 7.0–9.0. Our data suggest that for the short-term storage of common carp sperm, whereas the pH of the solution does not play a crucial role, a specific potassium concentration of around 40 mM is required. 相似文献

The addition of cryoprotectants during the freezing of semen in liquid nitrogen protects spermatozoa from the negative influence of freezing. Every species needs an appropriate cryoprotectant that has to be experimentally selected. Semen obtained from five perches was diluted with the Kobayashi buffer solution at 1:9 ratio. To determine the influence of cryoprotectants on spermatozoa motility parameters, the same type of buffer solution was applied with the addition of methanol, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and dimethylacetamide (DMA) using the concentration of 10, 5, 2.5 %, respectively, glycerol (15; 7.5 %), sucrose and trehalose (0.45; 0.225; 0.113 M). After the preparation of such tests, parameters of spermatozoa motility were measured, using the CASA system (Image House CRISMAS Company Ltd.). Among used cryoprotectants, methanol did not cause any effect on the sperm motility parameters. The lowest percentage concentrations of DMA, DMSO, glycerol, sucrose and trehalose did not significantly influence the percentage of motile spermatozoa. Higher concentrations of these compounds considerably lowered all motility parameters. As for glycerol and saccharides, their addition resulted in the lowering of the spermatozoa motility possibly due to a higher viscosity of the solution. The impact of feeding, fish size (body weight from 18.5 to 56.5 g) and water temperature (20 and 23 °C) on oxygen consumption (OC, mg O2 kg–1 h–1) and ammonia excretion (AE, mg TAN kg–1 h–1) was studied in Eurasian perch held in recirculation systems. OC for both fed and feed-deprived (3 days) fish was higher at 23 °C (278.5 and 150.1 mg O2 kg–1 h–1) than at 20 °C (249.3 and 135.0 mg O2 kg–1 h–1; P < 0.01). AEs for both fed and feed-deprived fish were also significantly higher at 23 °C than at 20 °C (P < 0.001). Water temperature and fish size had a significant impact on the oxygen:feed ratio (OFR, kg O2 kg–1 feed fed day–1) and ammonia:feed ratio (AFR, kg TAN kg–1 feed fed day–1; P < 0.001). Their average values at temperatures of 20 and 23 °C were 0.17 and 0.19 kg O2 kg–1 feed fed day–1 and 0.009 and 0.011 kg TAN kg–1 feed fed day–1, respectively. 相似文献

Real-time PCR directed to intergenic spacer (IGS) noncoding region between 16S and 23S rRNA genes was used for species specific detection of Mycoplasma felis in conjunctival scrapings. Samples were collected from 57 cats suffering from chronic conjunctivitis in 2008-2010 (Wroc?aw, Poland). Samples from 36 cats (63.2%) were shown to be positive for Mycoplasma felis. Our research gives a first insight in the occurrence of Mycoplasma felis among domestic cats in Poland suggesting that this pathogen may constitute an underestimated cause of chronic conjunctivitis. 相似文献

The study was conducted in the years from 2011 to 2013 at the Research Institute of Horticulture in Skierniewice, Poland. The aim of the research was to assess the breeding value, based on the effects of general and specific combining abilities (GCA and SCA), of 15 parental genotypes of blackcurrant in terms of fruit yield and quality. The plant material consisted of F1 generation seedlings obtained by crossing, in a factorial mating design of twelve maternal (‘Bona’, ‘Big Ben’, ‘Chereshnieva’, Kupoliniai’, ‘Gofert’, ‘Tines’, ‘Sofievskaia’, ‘Tihope’, ‘Ores’, ‘Ruben’, ‘Titania’ and D13B/11) and three paternal cultivars (‘Ceres’, ‘Foxendown’ and ‘Saniuta’). It was found that the cultivars ‘Ruben’, ‘Big Ben’, ‘Gofert’ and D13B/11 had significant positive effects of GCA on fruit yield at least in two consecutive years. ‘Ruben’, ‘Saniuta’ and D13B/11 had positive GCA effects on fruit weight. For ‘Chereshnieva’, ‘Gofert’, ‘Tines’, ‘Sofievskaia’, ‘Tihope’, ‘Titania’, ‘Ceres’ and Saniuta’ positive GCA effects were estimated for soluble solids content, whereas ‘Ruben’, ‘Ceres’, ‘Gofert’ and ‘Ores’ had positive GCA effects on the ascorbic acid content in fruit. This indicated a high breeding value of these parental genotypes in terms of the evaluated traits. The significantly positive values of SCA, estimated for the crossing combinations: ‘Big Ben’?×?‘Saniuta’, ‘Ruben’?×?‘Foxendown’, ‘Titania’?×?‘Ceres’, ‘Kupoliniai’?×?‘Saniuta’, ‘Gofert’?×?‘Foxendown’, ‘Gofert’?×?‘Saniuta’, ‘Tines’?×?‘Ceres’ and ‘Tihope’?×?‘Foxendown’ for at least two traits describing fruit yield and quality, were evidence of the interaction of both these parental genotypes in the creation of new dessert-type cultivars of blackcurrant. 相似文献

In this study, an artificial neural networks (ANN) model was developed to predict the removal of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), namely, naphthalene from marine oily wastewater by using UV irradiation. The removal rate was used as model output and simulated as a function of five independent input variables, including fluence rate, salinity, temperature, initial concentration and reaction time. The configuration of the ANN model was optimized as a three-layer feed-forward Levenberg–Marquardt backpropagation network with log-sigmoid and linear transfer functions at the hidden (12 hidden neurons) and output layers, respectively. By considering goodness-of-fit and cross validated predictability, the ANN model was trained to provide good overall agreement with experimental results with a slope of 0.97 and a correlation of determination (R 2) of 0.943. Sensitivity analysis revealed that fluence rate and temperature were the most influential variables, followed by reaction time, salinity and initial concentration. The findings of this study showed that neural network modeling could effectively predict the behavior of the photo-induced PAH degradation process. 相似文献
