We conducted two feeding experiments to evaluate the effects of supplementation with either cellooligosaccharide or kraft pulp on growth performance in grazing beef calves (Japanese Black) from 4 weeks pre‐weaning to 12 to 16 weeks post‐weaning. In Experiment 1 (20‐week duration), nine calves (2.9‐month‐old females) were assigned to either a control group (CON) or an experimental group (CEL) fed cellooligosaccharide at a rate of 10 g/day mixed with concentrate. Average daily weight gain tended to be greater in CEL than in CON, especially after 1 month of weaning. In Experiment 2 (16‐week duration), 10 calves (2.0‐month‐old females) were assigned to either a control group or an experimental group (KRA) fed kraft pulp at a rate of 10% replacement of total digestible nutrients with concentrate. The proportion of fibrolytic bacteria increased and that of methanogenic Archaea decreased in the rumen microbial community composition of KRA calves in Experiment 2, whereas the decrease in Fibrobacter and Archaea was observed in CEL calves at first 4 weeks in Experiment 1. We conclude that beta‐glucan prebiotic supplementation to grazing calves at pre‐weaning would affect rumen microbial composition and modified rumen fermentation characteristics, leading to a better rumen environment via different means. 相似文献

Measurements of peroxide concentrations in fog water were conducted near the summit of Mt. Norikura (altitude, 2770m) in central Japan, and at the midslope of Mt. Oyama (altitude, 680m), southwest of the Kanto Plain. The concentrations of peroxide at Mt. Norikura, far from industrial regions, ranged from 3 to 120 µ M during the summer and early autumn in 1993. The potential capacity for SO2 oxidation appears to be very high near the summit of Mt. Norikura. Analysis of the chemical composition of three-stage size-fractionated fog water samples collected at Mt. Norikura showed that the concentrations of peroxide were apparently independent of droplet size, whereas the concentrations of chemical constituents mainly derived from secondary aerosols and the acidity were higher in smaller droplets. Peroxide concentrations in fog water were low (< 5 µ M) at Mt. Oyama, located near heavy industrial areas, and lower than those in rain water sampled simultaneously (0.2–33 µ M). Especially, peroxide was scarcely detected in strongly acidic fogs (< 0.2 µ M). Peroxide might have been decomposed by SO2 (S(IV)) oxidation in the aqueous-phase. 相似文献

Drifting gill-nets were for a long time the main research gear for investigating the distribution of Pacific saury Cololabis saira. However, it has proven to be difficult to estimate the absolute abundance of saury using drifting gill-nets due to a lack of knowledge on the survey areas swept by these gill-nets. A mid-water trawl stock abundance estimation has the advantage of being able to estimate the absolute stock abundance before the commercial fishing season begins, whereas the conventional stock abundance estimation based on catch per unit efforts of commercial fisheries must be done after the commercial fishing season has ended. To confirm the practicality of a mid-water trawl to estimate the stock abundance of saury, we conducted a comparative survey in the northwestern Pacific Ocean using both a mid-water trawl and drifting gill-nets. We found that the geographic distribution pattern of catch per unit effort for both the mid-water trawl and driftnets was similar. Using the area-swept method and data on the fishing efficiency of the mid-water trawl obtained in a previous study, we were able to estimate the stock abundance plus confidence limits within the research areas. Our results suggest that the size composition of saury sampled by the mid-water trawl can be considered to approximate the actual size composition of saury. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Quantification of lipophilic toxins in bivalves associated with diarrhetic shellfish poisoning was investigated by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). Using a C8-silica reversed phase column and a mobile phase of aqueous acetonitrile containing 2 mM ammonium formate and 50 mM formic acid, okadaic acid, dinophysistoxin-1, 7- O -palmitoyldinophysistoxin-1, pectenotoxin-1, pectenotoxin-2, pectenotoxin-6, pectenotoxin-2 seco-acid, yessotoxin, and 45-hydroxyyessotoxin in bivalves were quantified by LC–MS in the negative mode. When the crude 90% methanol extracts were analyzed by LC–MS, there were no significant effects from bivalve matrices on the quantification of toxins. More than 200 bivalve samples collected from various production areas in Japan were analyzed by LC–MS. Pectenotoxin-6 and dinophysistoxin-1 were the dominant toxins in scallops and mussels, respectively. Yessotoxin and 45-hydroxyyessotoxin were also detected in both species. Comparison of the quantitative results obtained for these bivalve samples between LC–MS and mouse bioassay indicates that LC–MS is suitable for routine monitoring of lipophilic toxins in Japanese bivalves. 相似文献

Eggs of spiny dogfish Squalus acanthias are an indispensable and effective component of the compound diets currently used for larvae of the Japanese eel Anguilla japonica. However, this fish species, a natural resource, is becoming more scarce, suggesting that suitable diets should be developed using more sustainable components. In the search for appropriate diets without shark eggs, we have designed test diets in which shark eggs were replaced with general feed materials, such as fish protein hydrolysate (FPH), with the notable improvement that the FPH had been pre-digested with integral enzymes from frozen krill. Feeding trials were conducted to assess the effects of the test diets on survival and growth of Japanese eel larvae at early developmental stages. Larvae fed on the test diets were found to be able to survive up to 65 days after hatching, the maximum total length and body depth were 14.1 and 1.5 mm, respectively. Although larvae fed on the test diets still exhibited a low survival rate and poor growth, the FPH-based diets had a nutritional value that promoted substantial larval growth based on the significant difference between the initial and final body sizes. Our results suggest that the development of FPH-based diets not based on shark eggs but rather on general feed ingredients is promising but that there is much room for improvement. 相似文献

When predicting scores in the Draize eye irritation test based on measurements of in vitro alternative tests, we are often
faced with estimating parameters in a linear measurement error model with heterogeneous error variances. This article proposes
a new statistical method for parameter estimation to address this issue. The proposed method is an extension of an earlier
proposal that applied a linear measurement error model with homogeneous error variances, to cases with heterogeneous error
variances. A simulation study to examine the performance of the proposed method was conducted in a framework that was adaptable
to the data, which was obtained in a validation study of alternative methods to animal experiments conducted in Japan. The
proposed method reduced the biases of estimates in comparison with an ordinary regression analysis method and three other
methods under the assumption of homogeneous error variances. Although the proposed method did not fit the real data well,
the resulting prediction formula was far better than those obtained by other methods. 相似文献

To investigate the influence of heating and drying history on the microstructure of dry wood, in addition to the dynamic viscoelastic
properties, CO2 adsorption onto dry wood at ice.water temperature (273 K) was measured, and the micropore size distribution was obtained
using the Horvath-Kawazoe (HK) method. Micropores smaller than 0.6 nm exist in the microstructures of dry wood, and they decreased
with elevating out-gassing temperature and increased again after rewetting and drying. Dry wood subjected to higher temperatures
showed larger dynamic elastic modulus (E′) and smaller loss modulus (E″). This is interpreted as the result of the modification at higher temperature of the instability caused by drying. Drying
history influenced the number of micropores smaller than 0.6 nm in dry wood not subjected to high temperature, although the
difference in the number of micropores resulting from the drying history decreased with increasing out-gassing temperature.
A larger number of micropores smaller than 0.6 nm exist in the microstructure of dry wood in more unstable states, corresponding
to smaller E′ and larger E″ than in the stable state. Consequently, unstable states are considered to result from the existence of temporary micropores
in the microstructures of dry wood, probably in lignin.

The cladistic analysis of the V4 domain sequences, performed by UPGMA, the neighbor-joining, and parsimony methods, revealed that the 19 Pleurotus strains tested in this study evolved along three lineages, each corresponding to a separate biological species: the Pleurotus ostreatus complex, the Pleurotus pulmonarius complex, and Pleurotus eryngii. Moreover, the cladistic positions of the 3 biological species show that the P. ostreatus complex and P. eryngii were derived from a common ancestor at a later stage of evolution, and that the common ancestor had diverged from the lineage of the P. pulmonarius complex during an earlier evolutionary event. The sequences of the 5 portion of the mt SSU rDNA among the strains of the P. ostreatus complex had 99.2%–99.6% homology. All test strains in the P. pulmonarius complex had completely identical sequences. The homology of the strain sequences between the P. ostreatus complex and the P. pulmonarius complex ranged from 96.0% to 96.3%. The sequence of the strain of P. eryngii showed 97.8%–98.3% and 96.5% homologies with those of the strains in the P. ostreatus and the P. pulmonarius complexes, respectively. 相似文献
