We examined seasonal, annual variation and horizontal distribution of zooplankton in the Sea of Japan from 1966 to 1990. Zooplankton was most abundant in the spring. The spring maximum appeared in February–March and in April–May in the southern and eastern parts of the study areas, respectively. In the summer and autumn, a secondary peak was most conspicuous in the eastern part. The difference between the estimated biomass at night and day was large in the spring and small in summer and autumn. The biomass in the offshore southern area peaked about every 3 years between 1966 and 1983, and increased abruptly in 1990. The density in the area north of 39°N or 40°N was high. Total biomass estimated in the upper 150 m layer in the Sea of Japan (106 km2) was 9.5 × 106 t in the daytime and 16.6 × 106 t at night.  相似文献

Offshore migration of Pacific salmon Oncorhynchus spp. is partly triggered by increasing body size and high motility in the early stages of life. The survival of juvenile salmon may depend on their growth rate during the first few months in the sea, and this factor partly regulates the dynamics of adult populations. Here, we assessed the effects of water temperature and food availability on the growth of juvenile chum salmon O. keta. In addition, by combining the measurements of metabolic performance for growth and activity (Absolute Aerobic Scope: AAS) with a bioenergetics model, we estimated the energy allocation for different activities in the juveniles. Under high temperatures (14 °C), juveniles reared at low food levels (1% body weight) allocated less than half their energy for growth than those reared at high food levels (4% body weight). These findings suggest that high temperature and low food level constrain the growth of juveniles, providing an insight into the effect of the recent increase in warm and low-nutrient water masses on survival of juveniles and catches of adult chum salmon on the Pacific side of Honshu Island, Japan.

It was previously demonstrated that the dog dopamine receptor D4 (DRD4) gene is polymorphic in terms of the repeat number and/or order of 39- and 12-bp sequences located in the third exon. To examine whether or not the repetitive region is present in other species of the order Carnivora, the homologous region of DRD4 genes were sequenced in the gray wolf, raccoon dog, Asiatic black bear, common raccoon and domestic cat. In the family Canidae, the wolf had an identical sequence to that of the dog 447b allele, and a repetitive sequence similar to the dog DRD4 was also recognized in the raccoon dog. On the other hand, no obvious repeated structure was observed in the sequences of the bear, raccoon and cat.  相似文献

The concentrations and solubility of major and trace elements in soils collected from a field for long-term experiments maintained for more than 60 years and the neighboring area were investigated in order to reveal the influence of soil management on their behavior in soils. No obvious differences in the element concentrations in soils were observed except for P and U, whose concentrations were elevated in the surface soils of the experimented field because of the long-term application of phosphate fertilizers. Soil acidification associated with the successive applications of potentially acid fertilizers had changed the solubility of many elements as follows: the solubility of Li, Be, Al, Mn, Co, Zn, Y, Cd, Ba and rare earth elements increased, while the solubility of P, As, Se, Nb, Sb, Mo and V increased by liming. In the uncultivated soils, the concentrations of Fe, Zr, Nb, Hf and Th in the water extracts were relatively high, and a certain amount of these elements in the water extracts may occur in colloidal forms.  相似文献

Air-borne measurements of air pollutants transported from northeast Asia to Japan and the Pacific Ocean were carried out three times from 1996 to 1999 over the seas between Japan and Asian Continent. Those campaigns were named PEACAMPOT II under auspices of the IGAC/APARE program. A transport pattern of a highly polluted air mass from central China was found. Such air mass was driven by the quick movement of low pressure traveling from Taiwan area to the northeast of Japan. This finding supported well the results of modeling studies for long-range transport of atmospheric pollutants from East Asia.  相似文献

The histologic characteristics of a salivary mucocele in a beagle used in a toxicity study are described in this report. A pale yellowish cyst under the mandibular skin containing frothy mucus was observed at necropsy. Microscopically, numerous villous projections arose from the internal surface of the cyst and were lined by stratified epithelial-like macrophages, which were immunopositive for macrophage scavenger receptor A. A ruptured sublingual interlobar duct connected to the lumen was observed near the cyst. Luminal amorphous material showed a positive reaction with Alcian blue and periodic acid-Schiff staining as did mucin in the sublingual gland. Ultrastructurally, the epithelial-like macrophages had numerous vacuoles containing electron-lucent material, which was presumed to be lysosomal in origin, and had pseudopods on their cell surfaces interdigitating with those on the adjacent cells. This case report helps to understand the diversity of the background findings in beagles used in toxicity studies.  相似文献

We evaluated the diagnostic significance of the N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration in asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement. The plasma NT-proBNP concentration was measured in 21 clinically healthy control cats, and 67 asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement defined as end-diastolic interventricular septum thickness (IVSd) and/or diastolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWd) >0.6 cm, vertebla heart scale (VHS) >7.8, and/or left atria/aorta ratio (LA/Ao) >1.5. The plasma NT-proBNP concentration in the asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement (median: 662.0, range: 24.0-2,449.0 pmol/l) was significantly higher than that in the controls (24.0, 24.0-95.0 pmol/l, P<0.001). The plasma NT-proBNP concentration was significantly correlated with the VHS, LA/Ao, IVSd and LVPWd (r=0.578, P<0.001; r=0.462, P<0.001; r=0.563, P<0.001; and r=0.764, P<0.001, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed a cut-off value of 95.0 pmol/l for the detection of asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement, sensitivity and specificity of 88.1 and 100%, respectively, and an area under the curve of 0.971. These results suggest that the determination of the plasma NT-proBNP concentration can be a useful screening test for asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement.  相似文献

We investigated the growth, contents of water-soluble protein and free amino acids of the callus of japonica rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Nipponbare) cultured in liquid N6 medium containing a high concentration of zinc. Furthermore, we determined the N-terminal amino acid sequence of a Zn-binding protein expressed in large quantities in the callus. The addition of Zn stimulated the growth of the callus and increased the Zn concentration. The callus subjected to the high-Zn treatment (hereafter referred to as CHZn) contained a larger amount of soluble proteins and a smaller amount of free amino acids than the control callus. Zinc-binding proteins were separated by affinity chromatography. The SDS-PAGE pattern of these proteins showed a distinctive protein band of about 29 kDa. Especially, CHZn contained larger quantities of 29 kDa protein than the control callus. Twenty-seven N-terminal amino acids of the protein were sequenced as DYAPMTLTIVNNCPYPVWPGIQANSGH. Results of homology search to the amino acid sequences from the nr-aa database and the dbEST database suggested that this 29 kDa protein may be a novel zinc-binding protein and that the protein may regulate the concentration of free zinc in the cytoplasm of callus cells through its binding to zinc ions.  相似文献

Quinone outside inhibitors (QoIs) and succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHIs) are major groups of agricultural fungicides. However, resistance to some of these fungicides has been reported in a Japanese population of Puccinia horiana, the causal agent of chrysanthemum white rust disease. Because their mechanisms are not well understood, we investigated the existence of mutations in QoI and SDHI target protein-encoding genes. Eight out of nine isolates from cultivated chrysanthemum carried L275F and L299F amino acid substitutions in cytochrome b, the target protein of QoIs. These isolates showed 23- and 17-fold higher EC50 values for the QoI fungicides azoxystrobin and kresoxim-methyl, respectively, in basidiospore germination inhibitory tests, while they were hypersensitive to another QoI, famoxadone. All nine isolates were resistant to SDHI oxycarboxin and carried the I88F substitution in SdhC. This substitution was orthologous to the SdhC-I86F substitution found in some Brazilian isolates of the soybean rust fungus, Phakopsora pachyrhizi, showing reduced sensitivity to some SDHIs. Although the rarity of wild-type sensitive isolates, the subsequent limited number of comparisons between wild types and mutants, and a difficulty in applying reverse genetic analysis to this obligate parasite, are obstacles in making definitive conclusions, L275F and L299F in cytochrome b and SdhC-I88F are suspected to be responsible for the different patterns of sensitivity to QoI and for oxycarboxin-resistance in P. horiana, respectively.  相似文献
