Age-related changes in contractions of chicken aorta and ischiadic artery

The characteristics of the contraction of vascular smooth muscle were examined in thoracic aorta and ischiadic artery of chickens aged 3, 6, 10 and 18 weeks. High K⁺ solution induced a sustained contraction in smooth muscle preparations of aorta and ischiadic artery in vitro . The contraction of the ischiadic artery became greater with age, whereas the contraction of the aortic preparation did not. In the ischiadic artery, the magnitude of the contraction divided by the weight of the muscle preparation was constant at all ages studied. However, those in the aortic preparation decreased with age. These results suggest that the changes in the contractile responses of vascular smooth muscle owing to the age of chickens vary widely according to the preparations of blood vessels, and that the functional smooth muscle cells in the thoracic aorta of chicken do not increase with age.     

Anaphylactoid response to Optison(R) and its effects on pulmonary function in two dogs

Two of 26 anesthetized dogs given the cardiac echo-enhancing agent Optison showed anaphylactoid responses (AR) related to the human albumin component of this agent. The episodes of AR were self-limited, and could be reproduced by human albumin injection alone. Gas exchange was maintained by mechanical ventilation and 5 cm H(2)O PEEP, and dispersion of ventilation remained normal during AR despite severe hypotension. We suggest that: (1) pre-screening by measuring blood pressure response to intravenous injection of small doses of Optison, and (2) availability of access to the airway in addition to emergency agents may be prudent preventive measures when Optison is used in animals to enhance echocardiographic imaging.     

Magnetic resonance imaging of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis in a border collie

A castrated male border collie 23 months of age weighing 19.4 kg was referred to the Animal Medical Center of Nihon University with complaints of visual disturbance and behavioral abnormality, hyperacusis and morbid fear. The MRI examination revealed the slight dilated cerebral sulci and cerebellar fissures and left ventricular enlargement. This is the first report of MRI findings of canine neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis.     

Allopatric distributions of tetraploid and hexaploid forms of Aegilops neglecta Req. ex Bertol.

The genus Aegilops L. comprises 22 annual wild species that are closely related to wheat (Hammer in Kulturpflanze 28: 33–180, 1980). Aegilops neglecta Req. ex Bertol. is a member of the Aegilops section of this genus and is distributed from Morocco and Spain in the west to Transcaucasia and western Iran in the east. This species includes tetraploid (2n = 28, genome UUMM) and hexaploid forms (2n = 42, UUMMNN). However, the geographical distributions of the two cytological forms remain unclear. Clarifying the distribution of the two cytological forms is essential for a better understanding of the diffusion of Ae. neglecta and its tetraploid and hexaploid forms. In the present study, chromosome numbers were determined for accessions of Ae. neglecta from a total of 137 populations, located in the western area of the species distribution from the Aegean Islands to Morocco. Taken together with previous studies, the present data reveal a difference in the geographical distribution of tetraploid and hexaploid forms: tetraploid form is distributed in the eastern part of the species area and hexaploid form predominantly occurs in the western part with their border on the western margin of the Aegean Sea. Near the border, tetraploid and mixed populations are sporadically found among hexaploid populations in the Balkan and Peloponnesus Peninsulas, while a few hexaploid and mixed populations are found among tetraploid populations in the East Aegean Islands and West Anatolia.     

Nasunin from eggplant consists of cis-trans isomers of delphinidin 3-[4-(p-coumaroyl)-L-rhamnosyl (1-->6)glucopyranoside]-5-glucopyranoside

Two major anthocyanins were isolated from the acidified methanolic extract of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) by column chromatography and preparative high-performance liquid chromatography. These anthocyanins were interconvertible under room light illumination condition. By means of tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, their structures were identified and elucidated as delphinidin 3-[4-(cis-p-coumaroyl)-l-rhamnosyl(1-->6)glucopyranoside]-5-glucopyranoside (compound 1) and delphinidin 3-[4-(trans-p-coumaroyl)-l-rhamnosyl-(1-->6)glucopyranoside]-5-glucopyranoside (compound 2), respectively. The results indicated that nasunin comprised cis and trans isomers of the p-coumaric acid moiety in its structure.     

Clinical application of 2.16% hypertonic saline solution to correct the blood sodium concentration in diarrheic calves with hyponatremia

The aim of this study was to examine whether 2.16% hypertonic saline solution (HSS) is useful for the treatment of diarrheic calves with hyponatremia. Eleven of 13 female Holstein calves exhibiting moderate diarrhea and hyponatremia received 1,250 ml of 2.16% HSS over 15 min regardless of body weight. The remaining two calves that were unable to stand and had severe hyponatremia received 2,500 ml of 2.16% HSS intravenously over 30 min. As a result, hyponatremia in all diarrheic calves was significantly improved by the administration of 2.16% HSS from 122.2 ± 7.0 mEq/l at pre to 134.8 ± 3.7 mEq/l at post, which was above the threshold of 132 mEq/l for hyponatremia. Therefore, 2.16% HSS may be useful for hyponatremia in calves with diarrhea.     

Quantification of phosphatidic acid in foodstuffs using a thin-layer-chromatography-imaging technique

Apical application of lysophosphatidic acid (LPA), a growth-factor-like phospholipid, was shown to prevent or restore gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, such as diarrhea and stomach ulcer, in experimental animals. Because LPA is formed from phosphatidic acid (PA) by the activity of digestive phospholipase A(2), PA is a potential component for dietary treatment of such GI disorders. Here, we quantified PA contained in 38 foodstuffs and 3 herbs by a thin-layer-chromatography-imaging technique. Vegetables belonging to Brassicaceae, such as cabbage leaves (700 nmol/g of wet weight) and Japanese radish leaves (570 nmol/g), contained higher amounts of PA than other foodstuffs. Amounts of PA in fruits, cereals, and starchy root vegetables were below 300 nmol/g. Animal foodstuffs contained low amounts of PA (<60 nmol/g). Interestingly, leaves of Mallotus japonicas, a Japanese edible herb used for treatment of stomach ulcer, had the highest PA (1410 nmol/g) among those examined. The data shown here will be useful for the development of dietary treatment for a damaged GI tract.
