Milking performance of milking machines that matches the production capability of dairy cows is important in reducing the risk of mastitis, particularly in high‐producing cows. This study used a simulated milking device to examine the milking performance of the milking system of 73 dairy farms and to analyze the factors affecting claw vacuum. Mean claw vacuum and range of fluctuation of claw vacuum (claw vacuum range) were measured at three different flow rates: 5.7, 7.6 and 8.7 kg/min. At the highest flow rate, only 16 farms (21.9%) met both standards of mean claw vacuum ≥35 kPa and claw vacuum range ≤ 7 kPa, showing that milking systems currently have poor milking performance. The factors affecting mean claw vacuum were claw type, milk‐meter and vacuum shut‐off device; the factor affecting claw vacuum range was claw type. Examination of the milking performance of the milking system using a simulated milking device allows an examination of the performance that can cope with high producing cows, indicating the possibility of reducing the risk of mastitis caused by inappropriate claw vacuum. 相似文献

Elucidating the response of marine predators to oceanographic features helps in understanding their foraging strategies and the cause of their spatial overlap and interference with fishery activities. Northern fur seal is a highly pelagic species during the wintering period. In recent years, fur seals have consistently been found distributed near the coast of southwest Hokkaido, Japan. Because interference by fur seals with coastal fishery activities has become a serious concern, an understanding is sought as to why fur seals come ashore in this area. We conducted ship‐based observations and estimated fur seal density. To elucidate the spatial and seasonal association of fur seal distribution and ocean environments, we constructed statistical models to describe how potential prey distribution and oceanographic features influenced the fur seal spatial distribution during the wintering period. Fur seal distribution corresponded markedly to potential prey distribution, and they tended to aggregate along the narrow continental shelf that is the main geographic feature of this area, which is 2000 m deep and approximately 10 km from the coast. Walleye pollock [Gadus chαlcogrαmmα (Theragra chαlcogrαmmα)] and arabesque greenling (Pleurogrammus azonus), which are one of the main prey for fur seals, move to the shallow area to spawn on the continental shelf seasonally, so potential prey abundance could be higher in coastal areas than offshore. Moreover, the absence of a mesopelagic biotic community may be one of the main factors in the coastal distribution of the fur seal. 相似文献

To investigate the reason for the high mortality of cultured juvenile Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT), especially during land‐based culture, we examined the effect of the rate of light‐intensity change during the dawn period. Juvenile PBT kept in a natural light environment (control) were compared with those exposed to an artificially slowed change in light intensity during the dawn period (test group). For the test group, lamps, which were connected to automatic timers and placed above the rearing tank, were switched on from 0345 to 0515 h at 15‐min intervals. After 9 d, the survival rate of the test and control group was identical. Between Day 1 and Day 6, whole‐body cortisol levels were not different between groups. However, whole‐body glucose levels in the test group were significantly higher than those in the control group. Both groups displayed a diel rhythm in plasma cortisol concentration that peaked at 0300–0600 h. These results suggest that slowing the increase in light intensity during the dawn period did not improve survival and that low light intensity itself induces high mortality in cultured PBT juveniles. 相似文献

Cryptorchidism is defined as the failure of the testis to descend into the scrotal position. Bulls with cryptorchidism have problems in both meat quality and husbandry management; thus, it is greatly important to accurately identify the retained testis and remove it during the early stage. Abdominal computed tomography (CT) was performed under general anesthesia in 34 bulls aged 3–9 months with cryptorchidism. All bulls underwent laparoscopic or incision approach for cryptorchidectomy, and 40 testes were dissected. The detection rates of retained testes were 64.5% in the abdominal cavity and 100% in the subcutaneous inguinal region, and the total detection rate was 72.5%. Furthermore, all cases in this study were suspected to have intra-abdominal cryptorchidism in primary care, but CT revealed that 22.5% of cases had cryptorchidism in the subcutaneous inguinal region. The CT value (mean ± standard deviation) of the retained testes was 20.96 ± 7.54 Hounsfield Unit, and the CT value and size of the retained testes showed a positive weak correlation with bovine age. Therefore, there is the demerit that general anesthesia and a huge device are necessary; nevertheless, CT is suggested to be useful in identifying the location of retained testes and selecting an appropriate surgical approach in bulls with cryptorchidism. We have previously reported that night‐time lighting prevents the mass death of Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) juvenile due to collision and/or contact with the walls of sea cages, immediately after transfer to the cages, and that night‐time lighting does not negatively impact fish stress levels. However, the period of night‐time lighting should be limited to minimize negative impacts on the surrounding environment and aid management. Therefore, we investigated the optimal period of night‐time lighting by evaluating the whole‐body cortisol and glucose levels as stress parameters, growth performance and survival of PBT juvenile in four cages with different periods of night‐time lighting (i.e. unlit, 4‐day, 8‐day and 12‐day lighting). The results showed that almost all fish were died 1 day after transfer to the unlit cage. In comparison, the other groups (4‐day, 8‐day and 12‐day lighting) had high survival rates (92.5–96.0%) without significant difference. However, in the 4‐day‐lighting group, an obvious stress response was recorded on day 5, and growth performance was significantly lower. In the 8‐day‐lighting group, whole‐body cortisol levels were slightly elevated on day 9; however, significantly elevation was not recorded on day 12. These results indicate that the recommended lighting period of night‐time lighting in sea cages is 8–12 days. 相似文献

The immune response during the onset of coliform mastitis in vaccinated cows was investigated by measuring lactoferrin (LF), interleukin-8 ( IL-8), and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) concentrations and somatic cell counts in 28 milk samples at the onset of acute coliform mastitis (ACM) and 73 milk samples at the onset of peracute coliform mastitis (PCM). Vaccinated ACM, unvaccinated ACM, and vaccinated PCM showed significantly higher values for LF and IL-1β levels than unvaccinated PCM (p < .01). The IL-8 concentration was lower in vaccinated PCM than in unvaccinated PCM (p < .05). There was no significant difference in somatic cell counts for each parameter. There were no significant differences in the parameters between vaccinated and unvaccinated ACM cows, or vaccinated ACM and PCM cows. From the above results, it is suggested that mastitis vaccination improved the early immune response, particularly at the onset of PCM, and played a large role in host defense against the initial infection. 相似文献

The shallot is considered an important genetic resource for Allium breeding programs because, compared to the bulb onion, the shallot contains higher levels of several functional chemical compounds. However, there may be differences in content, composition and beneficial activity among shallot landraces. This study was carried out to characterize the differences in phenolic, quercetin, sugar, S-alk(en)yl-l-cystein sulfoxide (ACSO), and saponin contents and antioxidant capacities of a shallot germplasm including 31 strains derived from different regions of Vietnam and six other countries. A wide variation was observed in the quantitative analyses of the chemical contents. Shallots with high contents of polyphenols, saponins, and quercetins were found in the south of Vietnam and other low-latitude countries. Meanwhile, those possessing fairly high ACSO and sugar contents were observed in the north of Vietnam. Qualitative analysis of saponins via thin layer chromatography did not show clear variation among shallot strains, but polymorphism was observed between the shallot and other Allium species, such as A. roylei. The principal component analysis could clearly discriminate shallot strains by their geographical origins. All shallot strains showed potent antioxidant activities in a DPPH assay. The highest antioxidant capacity was in the strains possessing relatively high contents of polyphenol, quercetin, and saponin. Significant correlations were found between antioxidant capacity (IC 50 ?1 ) and four groups of chemical compounds (polyphenols, quercetins, saponins, and ACSOs) (r = 0.40–0.59). A strong correlation was observed between IC 50 ?1 and quercetin contents (r = 0.59, p < 0.01). The six Fusarium-inoculated shallot strains seemed to be adequately resistant against disease, and the levels of resistance may be related to the saponin content in the bulb tissues. 相似文献

Abstract: The Quaternary cold periods in the North-western Pacific are thought to have greatly influenced the genetic structures of marine species. One hundred and thirty-two individuals of white croaker Pennahia argentata were sampled from 12 localities throughout its distribution range to estimate the demographic history and genetic structure based on mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene and control region sequences. Two distinct clades with net genetic divergence of 3% in the control region were detected, one in Chinese coastal waters and the other in Japanese coastal waters. These clades may have been isolated and diverged during Pleistocene low sea levels. Nucleotide diversity was much higher in the Chinese clade than in the Japanese clade. The demographic history of the two clades was examined using neutrality tests and mismatch analyses, and the results indicated Pleistocene population expansion in both clades. Molecular variance and pairwise F ST analyses revealed significant differentiation between two Japanese populations and lack of genetic structure in the Chinese populations. The significant geographic structure in white croaker suggests a low level of dispersal in this species. The lack of phylogeographic structure in Chinese coastal waters may reflect a recent range expansion after the last glacial maximum and insufficient time to attain migration-drift equilibrium. 相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from wood and their effects on artifacts are of intense interest to museum staff who must
strictly manage the preservation environment. In this study, the causal substances of deterioration were inferred by comparison
with laser Raman (LR) spectra of deterioration products. The artifact samples were deteriorated using VOCs from woods (WV
test), and using specific substances that occur in wood VOCs (SV test). The deteriorated samples were analyzed by LR spectroscopy
and the results of the WV and SV tests were compared.
Hinokitiol and acetic acid were found to be two of the main causal substances of deterioration in western red cedar. Deterioration
of iron and copper by spruce did not appear to be caused by acetic acid, as is generally assumed, but by some other unknown
compound(s). Sensitivity to wood-based VOC components depended on the type of artifact. In western red cedar, mitsudasou (litharge) was very sensitive to acetic acid, while other artifacts were sensitive to hinokitiol. The LR method used in this
study is very useful for the inference of causal substances of deterioration based on the detection of small amounts of deteriorated
products such as those generated by deterioration due to wood VOCs.

We encountered an extremely rare tumor, a pericardial mesothelioma, in a neonatal calf. The patient calf showed severe abdominal distention, and died immediately after birth. The thoracic cavity was contained a huge heart with a large amount of pericardial fluid. A number of granular and cobblestone-like nodules were dispersed over the epicardium and pericardium. The nodules consisted of papillary proliferations of neoplastic cells, and the neoplasm occasionally showed mesenchymal proliferations. Immunohistochemistry revealed that they had the characteristics of mesothelial cells (cytokeratin-and vimentin-positive), and the neoplasm was diagnosed as mesothelioma. 相似文献
