Sea stars are a key group of species in benthic marine ecosystems and represent the primary cause of mortality for cultured scallops. In the mariculture grounds of Japanese scallops (Mizuhopecten yessoensis) in north‐eastern Japan, two sea star species, Asterias amurensis (AA) and Distolasterias nipon (DN), are serious predators. However, the predatory impact of these sea stars on scallops remains unquantified, with limited information being available on the biological characteristics of DN. We compared the predatory impact of both sea star species by evaluating their predatory behaviour (i.e. probability of predation and number of captured scallops) on scallops in laboratory experiments. Both sea star species preferred smaller scallops over large ones, with the probability of predation and the number of scallops being preyed on increasing with increasing water temperature. However, DN had a greater predation impact than AA. For instance, the probability of predation by DN was higher, with more scallops being consumed. In particular, compared to AA, DN continuously captured small scallops and fed on larger scallops. Furthermore, the predatory impact of both sea star species (particularly DN) on small scallops peaked at high temperatures. In conclusion, our results present information that could help improve the survival rate of seeded scallops in mariculture systems. 相似文献

We previously reported the possibility of using the electrocardiogram variable to estimate blood calcium (Ca) concentration in dairy cows based on the strong positive correlation between the blood Ca concentration and the inverse of the corrected ST peak interval (STc−1). To improve the accuracy of the estimation of blood Ca concentration, we investigated the relationship between blood Ca concentration and STc−1 for each postpartum day and available variables other than STc−1. We measured multiple variables (milk yield, calving number, age, body temperature, etc.), including serum total Ca concentration (tCa), blood ionized Ca concentration (iCa) and STc−1 in 462 Holstein cows on days 0, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 postpartum. A very high correlation was observed between iCa and tCa. The association between tCa and STc−1 for each postpartum day had a high coefficient of determination of 0.61–0.79 postpartum 0–2 days but decreased after the third day. In the investigation using the data from postpartum days 0–2, STc−1, heart rate interval, calving number, and age were highly correlated with tCa. In addition, a multiple regression equation was obtained with tCa as the objective variable and STc−1 and calving number as explanatory variables. The estimation accuracy was improved as compared with the simple regression equation using only STc−1 as the explanatory variable. This multiple regression equation was used for 11 cows suspected of having hypocalcemia, and it was able to correctly detect cows requiring early treatment, except for one cow. 相似文献

Human immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentrates are immune-modulating,
anti-inflammatory plasma-derived products. Clinical studies in recent years have suggested
that IgG attenuates neuropathic pain. In this study, effects of sulphonated IgG on the
development and maintenance of a mechanical allodynia-like response were examined in mice
with neuropathic pain induced by a partial sciatic nerve ligation (PSL). When sulphonated
IgG (400 or 1,000 mg/kg/day, i.p.) was administered for 5 days, from 1 day before surgery
to post-operative day (POD) 3, the development of a mechanical allodynia-like response was
attenuated. On the other hand, sulphonated IgG had little effect on the maintenance of a
mechanical allodynia-like response when administered for 5 days, from POD 11 to POD 15, at
which time a mechanical allodynia-like response had already been developed. To explore the
mechanism of sulphonated IgG, the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines was evaluated
in the injured sciatic nerve. Sulphonated IgG (1,000 mg/kg/day, i.p.) that was
administered for 3 days, from 1 day before surgery to POD 1, significantly attenuated the
up-regulation of tumor necrosis factor-α and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 mRNAs on POD
1. These results suggest that prophylactic treatment with sulphonated IgG attenuates the
development of mechanical allodynia-like response by inhibition of inflammatory cytokine

Six-day-old rats were treated intraperitoneal injections with methotrexate 1
mg/kg, and the cerebellum was examined. Both the length and width of the vermis decreased
in the methotrexate-treated group instead of the control from 4 day after treatment (DAT)
onward. A significant reduction in the width of the external granular layer was detected
on 2 and 3 DAT in the methotrexate group. By 4 DAT, the width of the external granular
layer of the methotrexate group was indistinguishable from the control, and by 8 DAT, it
was greater than that of the control. The molecular layer of methotrexate group on 8 and
15 DAT was thinner than that of the control. On 1 DAT, in the methotrexate group, there
were many TUNEL and cleaved caspase-3-positive granular cells throughout the external
granular layer, and they decreased time-dependently. On 1 DAT, in the methotrexate group,
phospho-histone H3-positive cells in the external granular layer were fewer than in the
control and tended to increase on 2–4 DAT. The p21-positive-rate of the external granule
cells in the MTX group was higher than in the control on 1–4 DAT. These results suggested
that methotrexate exposure on postnatal day 6 induces a delay, slowing in the migration of
external granular cells to the inner granular layer, attributed to decrease or inhibition
in the production of external granular cells that had arisen from apoptosis and the
decrease in cell proliferative activity, resulting in cerebellar hypoplasia. 相似文献

Repeatable head immobilization is important for minimizing positioning error during radiation therapy for veterinary patients with head neoplasms. The purpose of this retrospective cross‐sectional study was to describe a novel technique for head immobilization (Device II) and compare this technique with a previously described technique (Device I). Device II provided additional support by incorporating three teeth (vs. two teeth with Device I). Between 2011 and 2013, both devices were applied in clinically affected cats (Device I, n = 17; Device II, n = 11) and dogs (Device I, n = 85; Device II, n = 22) of various breeds and sizes. The following data were recorded for each included patient: variability in the angle of the skull (roll, yaw, and pitch), coordinates of the isocenter, and distance from the reference mark to the tumor. Devices I and II differed for skull angle variability during the treatment of dogs (roll, P = 0.0007; yaw, P = 0.0018; pitch, P = 0.0384) and for yaw of during the treatment of cats (P < 0.0001). In each case, Device II was superior to Device I. The distance from the reference mark to the center of the tumor was significantly decreased for Device II vs. Device I (dogs, P < 0.0001; cats, P = 0.0002). Device II also provided more accurate coordinates for the isocenter. Authors recommend the use of, Device II for future clinical patients. 相似文献

Two cases of spontaneous focal hepatic hyperplasia were observed in young female cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis). Grossly, a single raised nodule was observed in the left hepatic lobe. Histopathologically, the nodule compressed surrounding normal tissue; however, the hepatic cords within the nodule continued to those in the nor mal area except in part. Extensive fibrosis and absence of a normal hepatic triad were observed in the nodule. Thin fibrous septa radiating from the dense central stellate scarring and distended vessels were apparent in one animal. Hepatocytes in the nodule lacked cellular atypia, showed frequent PAS-positive eosinophilic inclusions in the cytoplasm and showed higher positive ratios for PCNA. The present cases resembled focal nodular hyperplasia reported in humans and a chimpanzee. 相似文献

In recent years, there has been considerable interest in lectins from marine invertebrates. In this study, the biological activities of a lectin protein isolated from the eggs of Sea hare (Aplysia kurodai) were evaluated. The 40 kDa Aplysia kurodai egg lectin (or AKL-40) binds to D-galacturonic acid and D-galactose sugars similar to previously purified isotypes with various molecular weights (32/30 and 16 kDa). The N-terminal sequence of AKL-40 was similar to other sea hare egg lectins. The lectin was shown to be moderately toxic to brine shrimp nauplii, with an LC50 value of 63.63 µg/mL. It agglutinated Ehrlich ascites carcinoma cells and reduced their growth, up to 58.3% in vivo when injected into Swiss albino mice at a rate of 2 mg/kg/day. The morphology of these cells apparently changed due to AKL-40, while the expression of apoptosis-related genes (p53, Bax, and Bcl-XL) suggested a possible apoptotic pathway of cell death. AKL-40 also inhibited the growth of human erythroleukemia cells, probably via activating the MAPK/ERK pathway, but did not affect human B-lymphoma cells (Raji) or rat basophilic leukemia cells (RBL-1). In vitro, lectin suppressed the growth of Ehrlich ascites carcinoma and U937 cells by 37.9% and 31.8%, respectively. Along with strong antifungal activity against Talaromyces verruculosus, AKL showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella sonnei, and Bacillus cereus whereas the growth of Escherichia coli was not affected by the lectin.
