The dog visual system is well suited to dim light conditions due to rod-dominated retina and the reflective tapetum. The topographical distributions of rods and thickness of the tapetum of the dog were quantified in retinal whole mounts stained with thionine, and spatial relationships among the tapetum, rod density and visual streak of high ganglion cell density were elucidated. The relationship between the retina and tapetum was analyzed in parasagittal sections stained with thionine or hematoxylin-eosin. The tapetum was thick in its center, and the thickest part consisted of 9 to 12 tapetal cell layers. Rod density ranged from 200,000 to 540,000/mm2. Maximum rod density was found in the area dorsal to the visual streak, and the density in that area was significantly higher than the rod density in the visual streak and accorded spatially with the thickest part of the tapetum. The horizontal visual streak was found over the horizontal line through the optic disc
in the temporal half and extended slightly into the nasal half. The central area of the highest density of ganglion cells was approximately located midway between the nasal and temporal ends of the visual streak. Skeletal muscle is mainly composed of myofibers and intramuscular connective
tissue. Bundles composed of many myofibers, with each myofiber sheathed in connective
tissue called the endomysium, are packed in the perimysium, which occupies the vast bulk
of the intramuscular connective tissue. The perimysium is a major determination factor for
muscle texture. Some studies have reported that collagen peptide (Col-Pep) ingestion
improves the connective tissue architecture, such as the tendon and dermis. The present
study evaluated the effects of Col-Pep ingestion on the chicken iliotibialis lateralis
(ITL) muscle. Chicks were allocated to three groups: the 0.15% or 0.3% Col-Pep groups and
a control group. Col-Pep was administered by mixing in with commercial food. On day 49,
the ITL muscles were analyzed by morphological observation and the textural property test.
The width of the perimysium in the 0.3% Col-Pep group was significantly larger than other
two groups. Although scanning electron microscopic observations did not reveal any
differences in the architecture of the endomysium, elastic improvement of the ITL muscle
was observed as suggested by an increase of the width of perimysium and improved
rheological properties. Our results indicate that ingestion of Col-Pep improves the
textural property of ITL muscle of chickens by changing structure of the perimysium. 相似文献

This study of a water cycle was conducted in an evergreen forest located in the Mekong River Basin in central Cambodia. At
the observation site, we measured the dynamics of the spatial distribution of groundwater levels. The groundwater movement
was analyzed two-dimensionally using boundary conditions and parameters that had been observed in the field. The climate in
the research area is dominated by two seasons, which occur annually: a rainy and a dry season. The groundwater levels are
generally high during the rainy season and low during the dry season. Groundwater levels were measured along a stream, which
flowed through the study site. The streambed was visible at the head of the stream in January. At the next downriver well
point, the streambed appeared in March. Finally, it became visible at all well points in April, meaning that surface runoff
had disappeared temporarily and instead flowed underground during the ensuing dry period. Groundwater levels of the studied
lateral flow perpendicular to the stream that seeped and infiltrated into the stream were 1.2–2.5 m deep (in April), which
was the lowest level recorded for the year. During that period, the depth of the groundwater of the studied lateral flow fell
by as much as 56 mm per month. In addition, the lateral flow groundwater infiltrated into groundwater of the stream during
that period. The groundwater level fluctuation was estimated based on a two-dimensional analysis of lateral flow perpendicular
to the stream using a numerical simulation model with soil physical parameters and observed boundary conditions. The observations
of ground water fluctuations were well reproduced. Deep seepage of groundwater was estimated using a uniform boundary condition
that allowed efflux through the bottom, estimated as being approximately 30 mm per year. The simulated deep seepage rate was
considered plausible considering other hydrological components such as soil water storage fluctuation. 相似文献

We studied the effects of a 2-day exposure to aluminum (Al), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) stress on root exudates and root apices of aseptically grown poplar (Populus tremula L.) cuttings. Aluminum induced root exudation of oxalate and citrate, Cu induced root exudation of oxalate, malate and formate, and Zn induced root exudation of formate. The threshold treatment concentrations were 100 microM for Cu and 500 microM for Al and Zn, corresponding to about 30 microM Cu2+, 140 microM Al3+ and 290 microM Zn2+. Simultaneous with the increase in organic acid anion exudation, sulfate and the nutrient cations K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were released into the solutions. Significant positive correlations between the organic acid anions and the cations indicate possible co-release. Toxicity symptoms of the poplar roots included browning of the root apices, which occurred at Cu concentrations of 50 microM and above, at Zn concentrations of 500 microM and above, and at an Al concentration of 1000 microM, and callose formation, which was observed solely in response to Al concentrations of 500 microM or higher. The results indicate that the composition of the exuded organic acid anions from poplar roots and the toxicity symptoms are specific to each of the applied heavy metals. 相似文献

The genus Kalanchoe is currently divided into section Kalanchoe and section Bryophyllum, and there has been no successful report on the production
of inter-sectional hybrids. Therefore, reciprocal crosses were made between Kalanchoe spathulata (sect. Kalanchoe) and K. laxiflora (sect. Bryophyllum) in order to obtain basic information on the reproductive barriers between these two sections. The seeds
were aseptically germinated in vitro and the plants were grown in greenhouse till flowering. When K. spathulata was used as a maternal donor, 39 out of 80 plants showed intermediate characteristics between K. spathulata and K. laxiflora. In contrast, no plants were obtained in the reverse crosses. Hybridity of these plants was confirmed by flow cytometric
analysis, chromosome numbers and RAPD analysis. Bulbil formation on the leaf margin as one of the conspicuous characteristics
of K. laxiflora was not observed in the hybrids. Some of the hybrid lines showed some pollen fertility, but failed to yield viable seeds
by self-pollination or backcross-pollination. Successful production of the inter-sectional hybrid between the two species

Effects of seed and root exudates obtained from common bean on the proliferation of Rhizobium sp. (Phaseolus) were examined in a combination of three plant cultivars with three Rhizobium strains. In the first experiment, seed or root exudate was mixed with an Andosol soil extract, and bacterial proliferation in the mixture was traced. Seed exudate was prepared from hydroponic solution used in seed imbibition for 24 h, and a series of root exudates was prepared from a hydroponic solution collected every 24 h from the initiation of rooting up to 96 h after rooting. Regardless of the common bean cultivars and Rhizobium strains used, Rhizobium population markedly increased of the 24 h of culture in the mixture containing seed exudates, whereas a negligible increase was detected in the mixture with root exudates. The mixture containing root exudates collected within a period of 72–96 h after initial rooting (96–120 h after seed imbibition) exerted an inhibitory effect on Rhizobium proliferation. The seed exudates contained large amounts of sugars, amino acids, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and magnesium compared to any root exudates. In the second experiment, Rhizobium was inoculated directly to common bean seeds sowed in a vermiculite bed which was sterilized and moistened with a plant nutrient solution. Compared with the control (without seed), a remarkable increase in the number of bacterial cells was observed in all the combinations of plant cultivars and Rhizobium strains 24 h after sowing. These results reveal that seed exudates of common bean have a substantial potential to promote Rhizobium proliferation, and that root exudates in a particular period of culture contain some inhibitory factors. 相似文献

In the middle terrace area of south Sumatra, Indonesia, where red acid soils poor in crop productivity are widely distributed, the effects of cropping pattern and cultivation techniques on physico-chemical properties of soil were investigated. Five patterns for cassava cropping, including monoculture, a rotation with annual food crops, and three intercroppings with differences in the combination with annual crops and in the planting density, were evaluated in Experiment I. In Experiment II, eight plots composed of the combinations of two tillage methods (no-tillage or conventional tillage), the presence or absence of surface mulch from crop residues, and two rates of chemical fertilizers were established for a maize–soybean–cowpea sequential cropping pattern. At the end of 3 years, there was no difference in total C and total N concentrations among the plots in Experiment I irrespective of the mulch treatment using crop residues. Soil organic matter (SOM) concentration was not affected even in the no-tillage plot where the maximum crop residues (20 t ha−1) was given as surface mulch with the increased root residues due to higher rates of fertilizers (Experiment II). In Experiment I, available P concentration was highest in an intercropping with higher fertilizer rates and lowest cassava planting density. In Experiment II, an increase in available P was attained by mulching and the higher rate of fertilizers, and a minor positive effect of fertilizer was also observed in exchangeable Mg and K concentrations. Surface mulch resulted in less clay fraction compared with the non-mulch plots in both the experiments, suggesting its effect on the maintenance of soil particle distribution. An additional finding suggested no prominent influence of cassava monoculture on the level of SOM in this area based on the comparison with other major land uses, including secondary forest, rubber plantation, and mixed cultivation of fruits with crops. Nevertheless, the introduction of crop residue mulch and higher rates of fertilizers are recommended for sustaining soil quality and achieving higher crop yields. 相似文献

The members of family Chlamydiaceae have a broad host range and cause many kinds of diseases in humans and animals. Several cases of Chlamydiaceae being detected in atypical hosts have been reported recently. Consequently, cross-species monitoring of Chlamydia in wildlife and livestock is pertinent for public health, animal hygiene and wildlife conservation. In this study, we conducted molecular surveillance of Chlamydia in wild birds and livestock around a small village in the foothills of Mt. Afadjato, Ghana where direct contact between wildlife and livestock occurs. Among 29 captured wild birds and 63 livestock, 5 sheep, 30 goats and 28 chickens, the positive ratios of Chlamydia were 24.1%, 40.0%, 43.3% and 26.9%, respectively. Chlamydia pecorum was detected in wild birds, goats, sheep and chickens. On the basis of the variable domain 2 region of ompA, several samples from different hosts showed identical sequences and were phylogenetically located to the same clusters. In addition, using ompA, C. psittaci, C. abortus and C. gallinacea were also detected in this small habitat. Further genetic and pathogenic analyses of the chlamydial distribution in this area, which represents the interface of wild and domestic animal interactions, may improve our knowledge of their transmission among different hosts. 相似文献
