A study was conducted to determine an optimal time for supplementation of DL-methionine in relation to time of forage intake by mature British breed-type crossbred cows, and two other experiments were conducted to determine whether ruminal ammonia concentration limited changes in disappearance rates in situ and ruminal functions caused by supplements containing DL-methionine. Experiments 1 and 2 used 4 x 4 Latin square designs with four cows in each experiment. Treatments in Exp. 1 were no supplement (CON), DL-methionine at feeding (0800), DL-methionine 4 h after feeding (1200), and DL-methionine 7 h after feeding (1500). Treatments in Exp. 2 were .5 kg of beet pulp (CON), .5 kg of beet pulp plus 16.5 g of DL-methionine (MET), .5 kg of beet pulp plus 16.5 g of DL-methionine and 55 g of urea (METU), and .4 kg of soybean (SOY). Experiment 3 was conducted in a 326-ha pasture with treatments of no supplement (CON), .5 kg of beet pulp plus 12.5 g of DL-methionine and 30 g of urea (METU), and .4 of kg soybean meal (SOY). In Exp. 1, in situ NDF disappearance rates of cows supplemented at 1200 and 1500 were greater (P less than .01) than those of cows supplemented at 0800. In Exp. 2, ruminal ammonia concentration was greatest (P less than .001) for METU (5.2 mg/dl) and least for CON (1.5 mg/dl). Disappearance rates in situ for DM differed (P less than .01) among treatments; METU was similar (P greater than .2) to SOY but faster (P less than .01) than MET. Disappearance rates of NDF were greatest (P less than .001) for METU-supplemented cows. In Exp. 3, DM and NDF disappearance rates were faster (P less than .10) for SOY than for METU. Cow BW change was positive for METU and SOY, and decrease in condition score was least (P less than .10) for METU- and SOY-treated cows. These studies indicate favorable ruminal responses to DL-methionine supplementation; however, the response depended on time of supplementation and ruminal ammonia concentration. 相似文献

Collision with ships is a significant cause of mortality among endangered whales. Collision lethality increases with vessel speed and mitigation includes slowing ships in whale dense areas. The 2181 km2 Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary (SBNMS) is a site of numerous whale/ship collisions. To understand how speed reduction measures reduce lethal collisions, we used GIS to apply hypothetical speed reductions to observed ship traffic within SBNMS. During 2006, we collected complete AIS data from SBNMS vessel traffic. We created 1.85 km2 (N = 810) grid cells covering SBNMS and determined each cell’s predicted probability of lethality (PLETH) from the cell’s mean speed and a mortality curve. We calculated average PLETH for the entire sanctuary (SPLETH), and used SPLETH to index status quo risk. We applied speed limits of 16, 14, 12, and 10 knots on transits and recalculated SPLETH for each scenario. Our analysis included 2,079,867 AIS points to derive 74,638 cell transits by 502 ships (>295 t). Sanctuary mean ship speed, by cell transit, was 13.5 knots (SD4.3, range 0.1–42.2). The choice of speed restriction had a major impact on SPLETH: 16 knots = −3.7%, 14 knots = −11%, 12 knots = −29.4%, 10 knots = −56.7%. The conservation benefit of speed restrictions is influenced by the status quo speed of ships from which risk must be reduced. As most areas lack such data our results can provide managers with a better understanding of how speed restrictions might reduce risk in their waters. 相似文献

Precursor reactions based on metathetical (exchange) pathways have been found to be an effective synthetic route for the preparation of a large number of materials. These solid-solid reactions are extremely rapid (typically less than 1 second) and often can be initiated at or near room temperature. They are potentially useful for controlling product particle size and for preparing highquality cationic or anionic solid solutions. The frequently self-propagating and sometimes explosive behavior exhibited by these reactions can be attributed to the large amount of heat they release. As a consequence, thermodynamic considerations can be used to help select the best set of precursors as judged from reaction enthalpies. The factors that influence these reactions are illustrated by a discussion of MoS(2), ZrN, MoSi(2), and GaAs, examples of the many compounds accessible by this synthetic route. 相似文献

A new type of electrometer is described that uses a single-electron transistor (SET) and that allows large operating speeds and extremely high charge sensitivity. The SET readout was accomplished by measuring the damping of a 1.7-gigahertz resonant circuit in which the device is embedded, and in some ways is the electrostatic "dual" of the well-known radio-frequency superconducting quantum interference device. The device is more than two orders of magnitude faster than previous single-electron devices, with a constant gain from dc to greater than 100 megahertz. For a still-unoptimized device, a charge sensitivity of 1.2 x 10(-5) e/hertz was obtained at a frequency of 1.1 megahertz, which is about an order of magnitude better than a typical, 1/f-noise-limited SET, and corresponds to an energy sensitivity (in joules per hertz) of about 41 Planck's over 2pi. 相似文献

The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of α ‐linolenic acid (ALA) on frozen–thawed quality and fatty acid composition of bull sperm. For that, twenty‐four ejaculates obtained from three bulls were diluted in a Tris extender containing 0 (control), 3, 5, 10 and 15 ng/ml of ALA. Extended semen was incubated at 37°C for 15 min, to allow absorption of ALA by sperm cell membrane. The sample was chilled for 2 h, packed into 0.25‐ml straws and frozen in liquid nitrogen for 24 h. Subsequently, straws were thawed and evaluated for total sperm motility (computer‐assisted semen analysis), membrane functional integrity (hypo‐osmotic swelling test), viability (eosin‐nigrosin), fatty acid composition (gas chromatography) and lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric acid‐reactive substances (TBARS)). A higher (p < 0.05) percentage of total sperm motility was observed in ALA groups 5 ng/ml (47.74 ± 07) and 10 ng/ml (44.90 ± 0.7) in comparison with control (34.53 ± 3.0), 3 ng/ml (34.40 ± 2.6) and 15 ng/ml (34.60 ± 2.9). Still, the 5 ng/ml ALA group presented a higher (p < 0.05) percentage of viable sperms (74.13 ± 0.8) and sperms with intact membrane (74.46 ± 09) than all other experimental groups. ALA concentration and lipid peroxidation in post‐thawed sperm was higher in all treated groups when compared to the control group. Near-infrared reflectance (NIR) spectroscopy was used in the characterization of grain morphology mutants of barley ( Hordeum vulgare L.) in relation to grain nitrogen (N) content and protein composition. Derivative spectroscopy provided spectra with enhanced resolution, allowing wavelengths to be identified with clear differences in contribution from associated chemical bonds. Comparisons of fourth-derivative spectra of wholemeal flour from high-N grains with flour from low-N grains identified wavelengths at which there were statistically significant differences between the groups. Their importance was independently confirmed by step-up regression using these wavelengths to generate an equation predicting N content (R(2) = 0.98). Fourth-derivative spectral comparisons also allowed novel biochemical differences to be predicted. Visual assessment of the spectra of all mutants revealed a variable region (1470-1520 nm, corresponding to N-H stretch vibrations) that allowed two extreme sets to be defined. The protein extracted from these two sets differed markedly in hordein content. 相似文献
