Purpose

The aim of this study was to quantify the contents and stocks of exchangeable and nonexchangeable fractions of potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) after one and three successive Pinus taeda crops without fertilization and to predict the soil supply for further cultivations.

Materials and methods

The soil was analyzed in layers up to 80 cm in two Pinus forests, one at the end of the first cultivation and other at the end of the third successive crop, in a subtropical region in southern Brazil. Stocks of exchangeable and semi-total fractions of K, Ca, and Mg in the soil were calculated, and the potential number of crop rotations of Pinus without fertilization was estimated.

Results and discussion

After three Pinus crops, there was an average reduction of 46.9, 90.8, and 45.5% of exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg fractions respectively. Semi-total Ca content reduced in all depths, and semi-total K contents, in turn, only decreased until 20 cm of depth. The semi-total Mg contents have not been modified over the cultivations. Considering crop management with the export of plant twigs and needles and relying just on the availability of exchangeable Ca, the stocks of these nutrients in the soil would be sufficient for only one more Pinus cultivation, even when considering the absorption of nutrients on an 80-cm soil depth profile.

Conclusions

The management adopted in the region must be modified, replacing the nutrients exported via harvesting, especially Ca. Thus, the establishment of new cultivation of Pinus without fertilization may have its yield impaired, especially by the Ca availability.

Effects of large-scale weed invasion on the nature and magnitude of moisture-pulse-driven soil processes in semiarid ecosystems are not clearly understood. The objective of this study was to monitor carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions and changes in soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) following the application of a water pulse in Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. wyomingensis) communities dominated by the exotic annual grass cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and by the native perennial grass western wheatgrass (Pascopyrum smithii). Sampling locations were established in shrub interspaces dominated by B. tectorum and P. smithi and beneath shrub canopies adjacent to interspaces dominated by B. tectorum and P. smithi, where no grass was present. Soils were classified as fine-loamy, mixed, Borollic Haplargids. Soil samples (0–10 cm) and air samples were collected at 0, 4, 8, 24, 49, 72, and 216 h following additions of 25.4 mm of water. Soil samples were analyzed for dissolved organic carbon (DOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), extractable ammonia (NH4+), extractable nitrate (NO3?), and dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). Grass species induced differences in soil nitrification, N2O and CO2 emissions, and the quantity and timing of labile C available to microbial populations responding to increased moisture availability. In the first 8-h phase after wetting P. smithii soils had the greatest CO2 emissions compared to other soils but B. tectorum soils had the greatest N2O emissions and the greatest increases in CO2 emissions relative to before wetting. Microbial biomass C in B. tectorum interspace soils increased rapidly but the response was short-lived despite sufficient water availability. After the first 8 h of soil response to wetting, the observed MBC declines in B. tectorum interspace coincided with disproportional DOC and DON concentration increases. Similar DOC and DON increases were also observed in B. tectorum soils beneath shrub canopy. In contrast, DOC and DON concentrations in P. smithii soils remained unaffected by soil wetting and small MBC increases observed during the first 8-h phase did not decline as rapidly as in B. tectorum interspace soils. In conclusion, summer drying-wetting cycles that occur frequently in areas invaded by B. tectorum can accelerate rates of nitrification and C mineralization, and contribute significantly to trace gas emissions from sagebrush-steppe grasslands. With frequent summer rainfall events, the negative consequences B. tectorum presence in the ecosystem can be significant.  相似文献

Timber harvesting influences both above and belowground ecosystem nutrient dynamics. Impact of timber harvesting on soil organic matter (SOM) mineralization and microbial community structure was evaluated in two coniferous forest species, ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta). Management of ponderosa pine forests, particularly even-aged stand practices, increased the loss of CO2-C and hence reduced SOM storage potential. Changes in soil microbial community structure were more pronounced in ponderosa pine uneven-aged and heavy harvest stands and in lodgepole pine even-aged stand as compared to their respective unmanaged stands. Harvesting of trees had a negative impact on SOM mineralization and soil microbial community structure in both coniferous forests, potentially reducing coniferous forest C storage potential.  相似文献

A simple two step procedure for the isolation of caprine, ovine, bovine, equine, canine, porcine and human peripheral blood granulocytes is described. After enrichment of granulocytes by centrifugation, contaminating erythrocytes are lysed hypotonically. Recovery, purity, and viability of the granulocyte suspensions are determined. FACScan analysis of the cell suspensions measuring cellular size by forward and sideward light scatter is compared with the corresponding analysis of whole blood leukocytes. Constituencies of the isolated cell suspensions and loss of granulocyte subpopulations through isolation procedure is discussed with regard to granulocyte function assays.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To establish a safe and effective endoscopic technique for collection of liver biopsy specimens from lizards by use of a 2.7-mm rigid endoscope system that is commonly available in zoologic veterinary practice. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 11 subadult male green iguanas (Iguana iguana). PROCEDURES: Each lizard was anesthetized, and right-sided coelioscopic examination of the right liver lobe and gallbladder was performed. Three liver biopsy specimens were collected from each lizard by use of a 2.7-mm rigid endoscope and 1.7-mm (5-F) biopsy forceps. Biopsy samples were evaluated histologically for quality and crush artifact. Ten days following surgery, all iguanas were euthanatized and underwent full necropsy examination. RESULTS: For all 11 iguanas, the right liver lobe and gallbladder were successfully examined endoscopically, and 3 biopsy specimens of the liver were collected without complications. Mean +/- SD durations of anesthesia and surgery were 24 +/- 7 minutes and 6.8 +/- 1.0 minutes, respectively. At necropsy, there was no evidence of trauma or disease associated with the skin or muscle entry sites, liver, or any visceral structures in any iguana. All 33 biopsy specimens were considered acceptable for histologic interpretation; in most samples, the extent of crush artifact was considered minimal. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: By use of a 2.7-mm rigid endoscope, liver biopsy procedures can be performed safely, swiftly, and easily in green iguanas. Biopsy specimens obtained by this technique are suitable for histologic examination. For evaluation of the liver and biopsy specimen collection in lizards, endoscopy is recommended.  相似文献

Seeds of population varieties, hybrid varieties, cytogenetic male sterility (CMS) single cross lines and CMS inbred lines of rye (Secale cereale L.) were stored to determine the respective rates of germination loss with a view to their storage potential. The seeds were stored under controlled conditions at a seed moisture content of 14% and a temperature of 30°C for periods of up to 80 days. The storage potential decreased in the order: hybrid varieties > population varieties > CMS single cross lines > CMS inbred lines. However, the rates of germination loss showed no differences within the respective categories. The inferences drawn for seed storage potential hold for seed vigour potential.  相似文献

According to Directive 2001/18/EC commercial cultivation of genetically modified plants (GMPs) have to be monitored. The aim of the monitoring is to identify potential adverse effects of the GMPs and their use on human health and the environment. There are few concepts showing how GMP monitoring may be implemented. This article indicates monitoring requirements with a focus on environmental issues. GMP monitoring has to be appropriate to detect direct and indirect, immediate and long-term as well as unforeseen effects. For choosing suitable monitoring indicators and methods, we propose a case-by-case approach, which is hypothesis-driven and related to specified protection targets. We present criteria for selecting suitable monitoring sites and demonstrate possibilities to integrate GMP monitoring with existing environmental monitoring programmes. To ensure comparability, interpretability and quality of GMP monitoring data a harmonisation on both national and international level is proposed.  相似文献

Dietary phytase supplementation improves bioavailabilities of phytate-bound minerals such as P, Ca, and Zn to pigs, but its effect on Fe utilization is not clear. The efficacy of phytase in releasing phytate-bound Fe and P from soybean meal in vitro and in improving dietary Fe bioavailability for hemoglobin repletion in young, anemic pigs was examined. In Exp. 1, soybean meal was incubated at 37 degrees C for 4 h with either 0, 400, 800, or 1,200 units (U) of phytase/kg, and the released Fe and P concentrations were determined. In Exp. 2, 12 anemic, 21-d-old pigs were fed either a strict vegetarian, high-phytate (1.34%) basal diet alone, or the diet supplemented with 50 mg Fe/kg diet (ferrous sulfate) or phytase at 1,200 U/kg diet (Natuphos, BASF, Mt. Olive, NJ) for 4 wk. In Exp. 3, 20 anemic, 28-d-old pigs were fed either a basal diet with a moderately high phytate concentration (1.18%) and some animal protein or the diet supplemented with 70 mg Fe/kg diet, or with one of two types of phytase (Natuphos or a new phytase developed in our laboratory, 1,200 U/kg diet) for 5 wk. In Exp. 2 and 3, diets supplemented with phytase contained no inorganic P. In Exp. 1, free P concentrations in the supernatant increased in a phytase dose-dependent fashion (P<.05), whereas free Fe concentrations only increased at the dose of 1,200 U/kg (P<.10). In Exp. 2 and 3, dietary phytase increased hemoglobin concentrations and packed cell volumes over the unsupplemented group; these two measures, including growth performance, were not significantly different than those obtained with dietary supplemental Fe. In conclusion, both sources of phytase effectively degraded phytate in corn-soy diets and subsequently released phytate-bound Fe from the diets for hemoglobin repletion in young, anemic pigs.  相似文献
