Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a valuable tool for the diagnosis of a multitude of conditions previously grouped into the vague diagnosis of palmar heel pain based on the response to palmar digital nerve diagnostic analgesia. The use of MRI not only determines a specific pathological diagnosis of the numerous structures within the foot but also the findings of the MRI help direct treatment and rehabilitation protocols, as well as providing prognostic information. Common injuries include damage to the navicular apparatus, deep digital flexor tendon, arthropathy of the distal interphalangeal joint and desmopathy of the collateral ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint. This article reviews common MRI abnormalities in the equine foot and how treatment can be directed by the findings. Medical and surgical treatment options, as well as shoeing and rehabilitation protocols, are also discussed in relation to MRI findings. Using MRI can help create a more individually tailored and case‐specific treatment regimen, which can, in turn, promote a more positive outcome in equine cases. 相似文献

Sagittal groove injuries of the proximal phalanx are an important cause of lameness in performance horses. The purpose of this retrospective case series study was to describe standing low‐field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of these injuries in a group of Warmblood horses. Horses with an MRI diagnosis of sagittal groove injuries involving the proximal phalanx and that had follow‐up MRI and clinical outcome information were included. Findings from clinical examinations, diagnostic tests, and other imaging modalities were recorded. All MRI studies were retrieved for re‐evaluation by an experienced, board‐certified veterinary radiologist. A total of 19 horses met inclusion criteria. All horses had MRI lesions consistent with unilateral or bilateral sagittal groove injuries of the proximal phalanx and abnormal mineralization of the sagittal ridge of the third metacarpal/metatarsal bone. Fifteen horses (79%) had concurrent osteoarthritis of the affected metacarpophalangeal/metatarsophalangeal joint. Eighteen horses received conservative therapy and all horses still had osseous abnormalities detected at the time of follow‐up MRI. Thirteen horses (68.5%) were still lame at the time of follow ‐ up, whereas the other six horses (31.5%) had become sound and returned to the previous level of exercise. Findings indicated that, for mature Warmblood horses, acute or chronic injuries of the sagittal groove of the proximal phalanx may have variable standing low‐field MRI characteristics. Based on this sample of 19 horses, findings also indicated that the prognosis for performance soundness in horses diagnosed with sagittal groove injury of the proximal phalanx and concurrent osteoarthritis is poor. 相似文献

Reasons for performing study: Currently, there are limited data regarding the long‐term outcome of horses with foot pain treated with corrective shoeing, rest and rehabilitation, and intrasynovial anti‐inflammatory medication to target lesions detected with MRI. Objective: To report the long‐term (≥12 months) outcome of horses with foot lesions following medical therapy. Hypotheses: 1) There is no association between clinical parameters considered and a poor response to therapy. 2) Horses with a deep digital flexor tendinopathy are less likely to respond to medical therapy than horses without a deep digital flexor tendinopathy. Methods: The medical records of horses with foot pain subjected to MRI examination and medical therapy (2005–2007) were evaluated retrospectively. Data collected included history, signalment, occupation, duration and severity of lameness at the time of MRI, radiological and MRI abnormalities. Number of treatments, complications and long‐term response to treatment were obtained by detailed telephone questionnaires. Association between clinical and MRI findings and long‐term lameness were investigated. Results: Frequent abnormal structures included the navicular bone, the deep digital flexor tendon, the navicular bursa and the distal interphalangeal joint. Thirty‐four of 56 horses (60.7%) failed to return to previous level of exercise due to persistent or recurrent lameness or owners' decision to decrease the horse's athletic level; however, 11 horses (32.3%) were being used for light riding. Prognosis for horses with concurrent deep digital flexor tendon, navicular bone and navicular bursa lesions was worse than horses with individual lesions. Deep digital flexor tendinopathy was strongly associated with persistent or recurrent lameness. Conclusions: Horses with multiple foot lesions managed with conservative therapy have a guarded prognosis for long‐term soundness. Deep digital flexor tendinopathies negatively influence prognosis. 相似文献

Dinoflagellates are single-celled organisms that reflect the ecological conditions in modern oceans and lakes. Ultrastructural data and molecular phylogeny suggest that they originated in the Neoproterozoic, yet dinoflagellate ancestors are classified only to the Middle Triassic ( approximately 240 million years ago). Examination of dinoflagellate-specific biological markers (dinosteranes and 4alpha-methyl-24-ethylcholestane) in concentrated microfossils with known morphology identified ancient dinoflagellate ancestors from the Early Cambrian ( approximately 520 million years ago). 相似文献

The present study sought to determine: (i) the effects of Neospora caninum infection and twin pregnancy on plasma pregnancy‐associated glycoprotein‐2 (PAG‐2) concentrations throughout pregnancy and (ii) whether plasma PAG‐2 concentrations could predict abortion in N. caninum‐infected cows. The study was performed on a commercial Holstein‐Friesian dairy herd in northeastern Spain and the final data included those recorded in 53 non‐aborting and 19 aborting animals. Blood samples were collected immediately before pregnancy diagnosis (on Days 40, 90, 120, 150, 180 and 210 post‐insemination) in non‐aborting cows or until the time of abortion detection in aborting cows. General lineal models (GLM) repeated measures anova revealed the different behaviour of PAG‐1 and PAG‐2, and significant effects of Neospora seropositivity, cool season and twin pregnancy on plasma PAG‐2 concentrations throughout gestation (between‐subject effects). In addition, based on the odds ratios, the likelihood of abortion increased in Neospora‐seropositive cows (by a factor of 7.0) compared to seronegative animals and decreased in cows with a high plasma PAG‐2 concentration (>4.5 ng/ml) on Day 120 of pregnancy (by a factor of 0.24), compared to the remaining cows. In conclusion, there is a relationship between plasma PAG‐2 concentrations and the risk of abortion in Neospora‐infected dairy cows. Thus, plasma PAG concentrations measured using anti‐boPAG‐2 antiserum on Day 120 of gestation could serve as an indicator of the abortion risk in N. caninum infected animals; values <4.5 ng/ml indicating a high risk of abortion in chronically infected animals. 相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the efficacy of urinary bladder matrix (UBM) in collagenase-induced superficial digital flexor (SDF) tendonitis by using clinical, ultrasonographic, and histologic data. A total of eight healthy adult horses were used in this study. Bilateral forelimb SDF tendonitis was created in the horses by injecting collagenase. After 14 days, one randomly selected forelimb SDF tendon was blindly treated with UBM and the opposite tendon was treated with a control (saline). Clinical and ultrasonographic parameters including lameness, lesion size, ultrasonographic fiber pattern, and echogenicity were measured throughout the study. After 84 days, horses were euthanized and SDF tendon lesions from the two groups were compared statistically using an analysis of variance with significance set at P ≤ .05.Results showed that there were no significant differences between the treated and control tendons for any of the clinical, ultrasonographic, gross, or histologic variables. UBM does not appear to be an effective treatment for collagenase-induced SDF tendonitis. However, there may be differences in clinical tendonitis that might render the treatment more effective in the clinical setting. 相似文献

Characterization of fecundity genes offers the opportunity to improve production efficiency, and the consequent increase in litter size in livestock industry, through utilizing them in breeding programs. The main objective of this study was to detect the BMPR‐IB, BMP15 and GDF9 gene mutations and to investigate whether these mutations are associated with litter size in Egyptian sheep breeds. To achieve this goal, 73 adult ewes representing Barki (n = 33) and Rahmani (n = 40) breeds were used. Polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP) screening approach was used to detect the presence of FecB, FecXG and FecXI mutations in the two selected breeds. Results of this study showed that the three different candidate gene mutations, namely FecB, FecXG and FecXI are not present among these selected populations of the Egyptian breeds. Further studies regarding other mutations and/or other genes, which may influence ovulation rate, should be carried out to determine the type and mode of inheritance of such genes in Egyptian sheep breeds. 相似文献
