The discovery and investigation of a novel family of herbicides containing a diaryl acetal are described. The stability of the acetal limited herbicidal efficacy and recognizing that fact led to the design of analogs with commercial levels of post-emergence activity on broadleaf weeds. These compounds inhibited acetolactate synthase and in vitro activity data were used to guide target design. A partial sequence of Oat mosaic virus (OMV) has been obtained for four isolates of the virus from four European countries. This represents the first available sequence data for this important disease of winter-sown oats. The longest clone of 1699 nucleotides was obtained from infected English oats using a degenerate primer, designed to members of the Potyviridae family. Alignment of the predicted amino acid sequence with members of the Potyviridae showed closest identity with viruses of the Bymovirus genus. The predicted amino acid sequence has one open reading frame corresponding to part of the NIb and capsid protein, with a 3 untranslated region of 351 nucleotides, followed by a poly(A) tail. PCR primers were designed to the coat protein and NIb gene of members of the Bymovirus genus and used to obtain partial sequences of 1441 nucleotides at the 3 end of infected oats from both Wales and France. A specific primer set designed to the English isolate was used to generate a product of 701 nucleotides from OMV-infected oat leaves from Ireland. Standardbred trainers from 1 racetrack and 7 off-track training facilities were surveyed to determine the most common drugs, and prevalence of concurrent herb administration. Furosemide (on-track) and anti-inflammatory drugs (off-track) were the most common drugs administered. Among horses on-track, 9.8% received herbs compared with 13.8% off-track horses; 67% and 58% of these horses, respectively, received concurrent drugs. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of using a porcine small intestinal submucosa (SIS) graft covered by a conjunctival flap for the surgical repair of full-thickness corneal wounds in dogs, cats and horses. PROCEDURE: All records dating from August 1999 to February 2003 from Purdue University Veterinary Teaching Hospital of patients that had undergone ophthalmic surgical procedures and received a SIS corneal graft for a full-thickness lesion were reviewed. Fifteen cases were identified including six dogs, two cats and seven horses. Requirements for inclusion in this study were that SIS was used as a corneal graft in a full-thickness corneal defect and that the graft was completely covered with a conjunctival flap. RESULTS: Of the 15 cases, one canine patient had received SIS following removal of an epibulbar melanocytoma. The remaining five canine patients had undergone this surgical procedure for the repair of corneal perforation. The two feline patients had been presented for corneal perforation following chronic ulceration. One equine patient had been presented for a deep melting ulcer, three for stromal corneal abscesses, and three for corneal perforations. Complications encountered postoperatively included aqueous leakage, conjunctival flap dehiscence, synechia, cataract and fibrin in the anterior chamber. Fourteen out of 15 patients were visual at the final re-evaluation. CONCLUSION: SIS is an inexpensive, easy-to-handle biomaterial that appears to be suitable for the repair of full-thickness corneal wounds in dogs, cats and horses. Results of our study support the conclusion that this relatively new product is an effective alternative to traditional implantation materials utilized in veterinary ophthalmology. 相似文献

Oat hull fiber is an insoluble source of dietary fiber, derived from the outermost layer of the oat grain. The effect of oat hull fiber on colonic function and serum lipids was investigated by conducting a controlled study on 10 healthy males, aged 20–37, who ate, for two three-week periods, a controlled low fiber diet (13.1 g of nonstarch polysaccharide [NSP]/day), and the same diet with 25 g of oat hull fiber per day incorporated into foods, providing 17 g of NSP/day. Fecal weight increased from 113 ± 10.4 to 155 ± 10.8 g/day (P < 0.001) with no change in transit time or serum lipids. Fermentation of oat hull fiber was studied by analysis of feces for NSP. Excretion of NSP increased from 2.0 g/day excreted to 19.7 g/day, indicating that no degradation had occurred. Oat hull fiber is therefore resistant to fermentation in the human colon, has no effect on serum lipids, and provides no energy to the body 相似文献
