Studies on the excretion of estrogen in cows following oral and percutaneous (pour-on) administration of chlormadinone acetate]

The oestrogen levels were assessed in 180 urine samples taken from 20 cows. The animals had received over 15 days 40 mg one-per-cent oily solution of chloromadinone acetate. The solution had been applied orally or by pour-on methods. The curves of oestrogen excretion were identical for both methods of application, both during and after completed administration. In other words, the effect obtainable from pour-on application is just as good as that obtainable from oral administration.     

Effect of transportation on blood metabolites in broilers

1. Groups of 30 broilers from seven flocks were bled and weighed at the farm and a further sample of 10 broilers from each flock was transported from 8 to 16 km to the laboratory prior to bleeding and weighing. 2. One haematological and 11 biochemical analyses were made on each blood sample. 3. Although transportation did lead to significant differences in certain variables, the trends were consistent and sampling following transit is considered acceptable for clinical pathology studies.     

A Study of Porcine Enteroviruses Isolated from Swine in the Toronto Area: II. Characterization of the Viruses as Members of the Picornavirus Group

Five antigenic types of enteric viruses from swine in the Toronto area were characterized as members of the enterovirus subdivision of the picornavirus group. The criteria used in the characterization of these viruses were those established by the International Enterovirus Study Group.     

Use of droperidol and fentanyl for analgesia and sedation in primates

A combination of droperidol and fentanyl produces qualitatively similar pharmacologic effects in dogs and primates. Unlike the dog, however, primates did not appear to respond to auditory stimuli. As a result of the analgesic and sedative or tranquil state produced in primates, the animals were easily handled and tolerant of painful stimuli. The principal desirable features of the combination were high analgesic and sedative potency and a rapid onset of action following intramuscular administration. High doses produced respiratory depression. However, this effect was easily reversed by administering nalorphine hydrochloride.
