A 5‐year‐old Arabian stallion was managed for breeding with fresh/extended semen during a period of 8 months with a resulting per cycle pregnancy rate of 26.3%. The stallion was in good health and no abnormalities of the reproductive tract were observed. Evaluation of several ejaculates revealed that sperm production and semen quality were mostly unchanged during the period of evaluation, that sperm production was normal and that semen quality was extremely poor. The most prevalent sperm defects were abnormal heads and mid‐pieces. Most abnormal heads were microcephalic and/or tapered and considerable variation in sperm head dimensions within and among ejaculates was observed. A unique defect characterized by swollen/roughened mid‐piece caused by accumulation of cytoplasmic‐like material and abnormal mitochondrial sheath was observed. Nuclear vacuoles, acrosome defects, and teratoids were also prevalent and most sperm presented multiple abnormalities. The absence of any clear cause or any signs of testicular degeneration, combined with normal sperm production, and constant abnormal sperm production suggest an inherent, congenital disturbance of spermatogenesis as the cause of teratospermia in this case.  相似文献

This account takes stock of events and involvements, particularly on the avian side of the influenza H5N1 'bird flu' incident in Hong Kong SAR in 1997. It highlights the role of the chicken in the many live poultry markets as the source of the virus for humans. The slaughter of chicken and other poultry across the SAR seemingly averted an influenza pandemic. This perspective from Hong Kong SAR marks the coming-of-age of acceptance of the role of avian hosts as a source of pandemic human influenza viruses and offers the prospect of providing a good baseline for influenza pandemic preparedness in the future. Improved surveillance is the key. This is illustrated through the H9N2 virus which appears to have provided the 'replicating' genes for the H5N1 virus and which has since been isolated in the SAR from poultry, pigs and humans highlighting its propensity for interspecies transmission.  相似文献

Several salivary glands and the nasal mucosa of rabid skunks (Mephitis mephitis) contained rabies virus. Generally titers were high in the submandibular, moderate in the parotid and low to moderate in the zygomatic, molar and sublingual salivary glands. The nasal mucosa (glands and epithelium) contained virus at low to moderate titers that occasionally were equal to titers in brain.  相似文献

There are reflectance spectra in the visible and near infrared wavelengths from some 20 000 archived samples of soil in Australia. Their particular forms depend on absorbances at specific wavelengths characteristic of components in the soil such as water, iron oxides, clay minerals and carbon compounds, and so one might expect to be able to predict soil properties from the spectra. We tested a tree‐based technique for the prediction of 24 soil properties. A tree is first constructed by the definition of rules that separate the data into fairly homogeneous groups for any given property on both the absorptions at specified wavelengths and other, categoric, variables. Then within each group the property is predicted from the absorptions at those wavelengths by ordinary least‐squares regression. The spectroscopic predictions of the soil properties were compared with actual values in a subset of sample data separated from the whole data for validation. The criteria of success that we used were the root mean squared error (RMSE) to measure the inaccuracy of our predictions, the mean error (ME) to measure their bias and the standard deviation of the error (SDE) to measure their imprecision. We also used the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD), which is the ratio of the standard deviation of the observed values to the RMSE of the predictions; the larger it is the better does the technique perform. We found good predictions (RPD>2) for clay and total sand content, for total organic carbon and total nitrogen, pH, cation exchange capacity, and exchangeable calcium, magnesium and sodium. Several other properties were moderately well predicted (1.5 ≤ RPD < 2); they included air‐dry water content, volumetric water content at field capacity and wilting point, bulk density, the contents of silt, fine sand and coarse sand, total and exchangeable potassium, total phosphorus and extractable iron. Properties that were poorly predicted (RPD < 1.5) include the carbon‐to‐nitrogen ratio, available phosphorus and exchangeable acidity. We conclude that even though the predictions are less accurate than direct measurements, the spectra are cheap yet valuable sources of information for predicting values of individual soil properties when large numbers of analyses are needed, for example, for soil mapping.  相似文献

This paper shows how the wavelet transform can be used to analyse the complex spatial covariation of the rate of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from the soil with soil properties that are expected to control the evolution of N2O. We use data on N2O emission rates from soil cores collected at 4‐m intervals on a 1024‐m transect across arable land at Silsoe in England. Various soil properties, particularly those expected to influence N2O production in the soil, were also determined on these cores. We used the adapted maximal overlap discrete wavelet transform (AMODWT) coefficients for the N2O emissions and soil variables to compute their wavelet covariances and correlations. These showed that, over the transect as a whole, some soil properties were significantly correlated with N2O emissions at fine spatial scales (soil carbon content), others at intermediate scales (soil water content) and others at coarse spatial scales (soil pH). Ammonium did not appear to be correlated with N2O emissions at any scale, suggesting that nitrification was not a significant source of N2O from these soils in the conditions that pertained at sampling. We used a procedure to detect changes in the wavelet correlations at several spatial scales. This showed that certain soil properties were correlated with N2O emissions only under certain conditions of topography or parent material. This is not unexpected given that N2O is generated by biological processes in the soil, so the rate of emission may be subject to one limiting factor in one environment and a different factor elsewhere. Such changes in the relationship between variables from one part of the landscape to another is not consistent with the geostatistical assumption that our data are realizations of coregionalized random variables.  相似文献
