This study aims to estimate the strain additive genetic and heterotic effects on growth and survival in a 4 × 4 complete diallel cross‐population of Nile tilapia. Mass spawning was practised in replicate hapas to simultaneously produce progeny of all crosses for performance testing in three environments (in ponds at 20–30°C, in tanks at 15–20°C and in tanks at 20–25°C). A total of 6735 individually tagged fish were tested over a grow‐out period of 278 days. Statistical analyses were carried out on 5097 body trait records available at harvest. Across the test environments, the NOVIT4 strain exhibited the highest additive genetic values for both growth and survival (19% and 33% above the pure strain mean respectively). The heterosis effect was low and not different from zero for both traits. The ranking of strains with respect to their additive genetic values generally did not change between tank environments (15–20 vs. 20–25°C). The correlations of the additive genetic performance between tank environments were also high (0.84), suggesting that strain by water temperature interaction was likely not biologically important. By contrast, the differences in both performance and survival between pond and tank environments were statistically significant, indicating that this effect should be accounted for in future breeding programmes. The large additive genetic effect among strains coupled with the non‐significant heterotic effects in our study suggest that future breeding programme in this population of Nile tilapia should be based on a wise choice of strain or by exploiting the additive genetic variation through selective breeding.  相似文献

Freshwater rivers have been substantially altered by development and flow regulation. Altered hydrological regimes have affected a range of biota, but impacts are often most obvious on freshwater fish. Flow largely influences the range of physical habitat available to fish at various life history stages. Biological rhythms are therefore often linked to flow and optimized so that opportunities for spawning, growth and dispersal are synchronized. Assuming that flow therefore becomes the main factor which structures freshwater fish communities, the use of species specific biological information should be able to inform adaptive flow delivery strategies from the river reach to catchment scale. A test of this assertion was performed as a case study of native fish within the Edward‐Wakool River system (New South Wales, Australia). Fish within the system were assigned to one of four groups based on biological similarity. Aspects of reproductive and movement ecology were then reviewed to generate optimal flow release strategies for each group. Life expectancy and hydrological constraints were then investigated and used to develop a possible 10‐year flow delivery program that could generate ecological outcomes within a strategic adaptive management framework that considered potential impacts on third parties. The approach could be used to develop flow characteristics to benefit biota in any watercourse provided enough data are available to link potential outcomes with flow delivery.  相似文献

The optimal time to wean fish larvae from live feed to artificial feed was explored in yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi (YTK). The same weaning regime started at five different days post hatching (DPH), namely 10 DPH (W10), 13 DPH (W13), 16 DPH (W16), 19 DPH (W19) and 22 DPH (W22). The activities of trypsin, lipase and alkaline phosphatase were detected in fish from 8 DPH throughout the experiment, but pepsin activity was first detected in fish on 15 DPH in the W10 and W13 treatments. The increase in pepsin activity was concomitant with the decrease in trypsin activity. Total fish lipids after weaning reduced by 40% in the W10 and W13 treatments, and increased by 20% in the W19 and W22. Fish survival rate in the W22 treatment was significantly higher than that in the W10 and W13 treatments. The results suggest that 16 DPH is the earliest day to wean and the best weaning window for YTK larvae should be 19–22 DPH. This study provides enzymatic evidence to guide the weaning process for YTK larvae, and offers a useful approach to explore optimal weaning time for fish larvae.  相似文献

Oat grain is routinely kilned and steamed before milling to develop flavor and to inactivate lipid-degrading enzymes. Heat treatments can significantly affect viscous properties, which have functional and nutritional importance. Oat flour slurries (23%, w/w, solids dry basis) made from steamed (for 20 min) or autoclaved (at 121°C, 15 psi, for 10 min) grain developed high viscosities, whereas flour slurries made from raw or kilned (105°C for 90 min) oats did not. Flour slurries made from raw groats, surface-sterilized by 1% hypochlorite, were more viscous than untreated raw groat flour slurries, suggesting that β-glucan hydrolases on the surface of the groat caused the viscosity losses observed in raw or kilned groats. However, because viscosities developed by surface-sterilized groats were not as great as in steamed oat-flour slurries and because some roasting treatments also inactivated enzymes without enhancing viscosity, it appears steaming might also affect the β-glucan polymer, resulting in its greater hydration in solution. Smaller particle size and higher incubation temperature also resulted in increased flour slurry viscosity, presumably because of increased hydration of the β-glucan. Rmoval of lipids from steamed oat flour significantly increased the oat flour slurry viscosity, apparently by increasing the β-glucan concentration in the flour.  相似文献

Four domestic rabbits were presented with a history of nonpruritic scale. Multiple skin biopsies revealed findings compatible with sebaceous adenitis as reported in other species: inflammation directed at the sebaceous gland, and/or an absence of sebaceous glands, a perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrate at the level of the absent sebaceous glands, hyperkeratosis, follicular keratosis, follicular dystrophy, perifollicular fibrosis, and a mural infiltrative lymphocytic folliculitis. Histological changes not consistent with sebaceous adenitis in other species were interface dermatitis and interface folliculitis with single cell necrosis and basal cell hydropic degeneration.  相似文献

Re‐ranking of strain additive genetic effect and heterosis expression in different culture environments is not well understood in shellfish species. This study was carried out to estimate the strain additive genetic and heterotic effects on harvest body weight in a 3 × 3 complete diallel cross involving three populations of Portuguese oyster (Crassostrea angulata), two populations from Cat Ba (RIA1) and Nam Dinh, northern Vietnam, and an imported stock from China. Strip spawning was applied to produce full‐ and half‐sib families simultaneously of nine cross‐combinations for performance testing at two locations (Cat Ba Island, Hai Phong city and Van Don Island, Quang Ninh province, Vietnam) using two culture systems (‘single seed’ and ‘cultch set’). A total of 7269 individual oysters were examined over a grow‐out period of 270 days. A linear mixed model was used to estimate strain additive genetic and heterotic effects for body weight at harvest. Ranking of strains based on their additive genetic effects did not differ between the locations and culture systems. The non‐additive genetic (heterotic) effects were low and not significantly different from zero for the traits studied among culture systems. There were no significant differences in levels of heterosis for harvest body weight between the two test environments or culture systems. Based on the non‐significant heterotic and large additive genetic effects among strains used for this study, a future breeding programme in this species (C. angulata), setting aside issues of diversity, could be based simply on choice among different strains based on their performance.  相似文献

The DRAINMOD-N II model (version 6.0) was evaluated for a cold region in south-east Sweden. The model was field-tested using four periods between 2002 and 2004 of climate, soil, hydrology and water quality data from three experimental plots, planted to a winter wheat-sugarbeet-barley-barley crop rotation and managed using conventional and controlled drainage. DRAINMOD-N II was calibrated using data from a conventional drainage plot, while data sets from two controlled drainage plots were used for model validation. The model was statistically evaluated by comparing simulated and measured drain flows and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) losses in subsurface drains. Soil mineral nitrogen (N) content was used to evaluate simulated N dynamics. Observed and predicted NO3-N losses in subsurface drains were in satisfactory agreement. The mean absolute error (MAE) in predicting NO3-N drainage losses was 0.16 kg N ha−1 for the calibration plot and 0.21 and 0.30 kg N ha−1 for the two validation plots. For the simulation period, the modelling efficiency (E) was 0.89 for the calibration plot and 0.49 and 0.55 for the validation plots. The overall index of agreement (d) was 0.98 for the calibration plot and 0.79 and 0.80 for the validation plots. These results show that DRAINMOD-N II is applicable for predicting NO3-N losses from drained soil under cold conditions in south-east Sweden.  相似文献

Vegetable flavor is an important factor in consumer choice but a trait that is difficult to assess quantitatively. The purpose of this study was to assess the levels of the major umami compounds in boiled potato tubers, in cultivars previously assessed for sensory quality. The free levels of the major umami amino acids, glutamate and aspartate, and the 5'-nucleotides, GMP and AMP, were measured in potato samples during the cooking process. Tubers were sampled at several time points during the growing season. The levels of both glutamate and 5'-nucleotides were significantly higher in mature tubers of two Solanum phureja cultivars compared with two Solanum tuberosum cultivars. The equivalent umami concentration was calculated for five cultivars, and there were strong positive correlations with flavor attributes and acceptability scores from a trained evaluation panel, suggesting that umami is an important component of potato flavor.  相似文献

Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for collecting multispectral imagery of agricultural fields are becoming more affordable and accessible. However, there is need to validate calibration of sensors on these systems when using them for quantitative analyses such as evapotranspiration, and other modeling for agricultural applications. The results of laboratory testing of a MicaSense (Seattle, WA, USA) RedEdge? 3 multispectral camera and MicaSense Downwelling Light Sensor (irradiance sensor) system using a calibrated integrating sphere were presented. Responses of the camera and irradiance sensor were linear over many light levels and became non-linear at light levels below expected real-world, field conditions. Simple linear corrections should suffice for most light conditions encountered during the growing season. Using an irradiance sensor or similar system may not properly account for light variability in cloudy or partly cloudy conditions as also identified by others. A simple stand for aiding in reference panel imaging was also described, which may facilitate repetitive, consistent reference panel imaging.
