Results of abdominal survey radiography and x-ray computed tomography (CT) were compared in 13 dogs with hyperadrenocorticism histologically attributed to adrenocortical tumors. X-ray computed tomography enabled accurate localization of the tumor in all 13 dogs. Apart from 2 poorly demarcated irregular-shaped and mineralized carcinomas, there were no differences between adenoma (n = 3) and carcinoma (n = 10) on CT images. In 1 dog, invasion of the caudal vena cava by the tumor was suggested on CT images and was confirmed during surgery. Suspicion of adhesions between tumors of the right adrenal gland and the caudal vena cava on the basis of CT images was confirmed during surgery in only 2 of 6 dogs. Survey radiography allowed accurate localization of the tumor in 7 dogs (4 on the right side and 3 on the left). In 6 of these dogs, the tumor was visible as a well-demarcated soft tissue mass and, in the other dog, as a poorly demarcated mineralized mass. The smallest tumor visualized on survey radiographs had a diameter of 20 mm on CT images. Six tumors with diameter less than or equal to 20 mm were not visualized on survey radiographs. In 1 of these dogs, a mineralized nodule was found in the left adrenal region, without evidence of a mass. In a considerable number of cases, survey radiography can provide presurgical localization of adrenocortical tumors in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism; CT is redundant in these instances. In the absence of positive radiographic findings, CT is valuable for localization of adrenocortical tumors. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively assess distraction-induced bone formation in a crural lengthening model in dogs by use of delayed-image bone scintigraphy. ANIMALS: 12 mature Labrador Retrievers. PROCEDURE: Dogs were randomly allocated to 1 of 3 groups. A circular external skeletal fixation system was mounted on the right crus of each dog. Osteotomy of the distal portion of the tibia and fibula was performed in groups 1 and 2 and was followed by a lengthening procedure of 10 mm in the first group only. The third group served as sham-operated controls. Delayed-image bone scintigraphy with technetium-99m hydroxy methylene diphosphonate was performed 2, 4, and 6 weeks after surgery. Delayed-image-to-region-of-interest, delayed-image-to-crural, and delayed-image-to-femoral scintigraphic activity ratios were calculated. New bone formation was quantified by use of densitometric image analysis, and values for the scintigraphic ratios were compared. RESULTS: In the distraction and osteotomy groups, delayed-image-to-region-of-interest and delayed-image-to-crural ratios increased significantly. Although densitometric image analysis revealed increased bone formation after distraction, the region-of-interest ratios and crural ratios were similar in both groups. All dogs had increased delayed-image-to-femoral ratios. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Delayed-image bone scintigraphy ratios were not effective at differentiating between the amounts of distraction-induced bone and osteotomy-induced bone. Metabolic bone activity in the adjacent femur was increased as a consequence of circular external skeletal fixator placement. Delayed-image bone scintigraphy was not adequately sensitive to quantitatively monitor bone formation but may be useful as an early predictor of bone healing. 相似文献

The medical records of 156 dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (DLS) that underwent decompressive surgery were reviewed for signalment, history, clinical signs, imaging and surgical findings. The German Shepherd Dog (GSD) was most commonly affected (40/156, 25.6%). Pelvic limb lameness, caudal lumbar pain and pain evoked by lumbosacral pressure were the most frequent clinical findings. Radiography showed lumbosacral step formation in 78.8% (93/118) of the dogs which was associated with elongation of the sacral lamina in 18.6% (22/118). Compression of the cauda equina was diagnosed by imaging (epidurography, CT, or MRI) in 94.2% (147/156) of the dogs. Loss of the bright nucleus pulposus signal of the L7-S1 disc was found on T2-weighted MR images in 73.5% (25/34) of the dogs. The facet joint angle at L7-S1 was significantly smaller, and the tropism greater in GSD than in the other dog breeds. The smaller facet joint angle and higher incidence of tropism seen in the GSD may predispose this breed to DLS. Epidurography, CT, and MRI allow adequate visualization of cauda equina compression. During surgery, disc protrusion was found in 70.5% (110/156) of the dogs. Overall improvement after surgery was recorded in the medical records in 79.0% (83/105) of the dogs. Of the 38 owners that responded to questionnaires up to five years after surgery, 29 (76%) perceived an improvement. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess the extent of agreement between computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and surgical findings in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis. DESIGN: Observational study. ANIMALS: 35 dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis. PROCEDURES: Results of preoperative CT and MRI were compared with surgical findings with respect to degree and location of disk protrusion, position of the dural sac, amount of epidural fat, and swelling of spinal nerve roots. RESULTS: A lumbosacral step was seen on radiographic images from 22 of 32 (69%) dogs, on CT images from 23 of 35 (66%) dogs, and on MR images from 21 of 35 (60%) dogs. Most dogs had slight or moderate disk protrusion that was centrally located. There was substantial or near perfect agreement between CT and MRI findings in regard to degree of disk protrusion (kappa, 0.88), location of disk protrusion (0.63), position of the dural sac (0.89), amount of epidural fat (0.72), and swelling of spinal nerve roots (0.60). The degree of agreement between CT and surgical findings and between MRI and surgical findings was moderate in regard to degree and location of disk protrusion (kappa, 0.44 to 0.56) and swelling of spinal nerve roots (0.40 and 0.50). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicate that there is a high degree of agreement between CT and MRI findings in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis but that the degree of agreement between diagnostic imaging findings and surgical findings is lower. 相似文献

A retrospective radiographic study was performed to investigate the prevalence of diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) and spondylosis deformans (spondylosis) in 2041 purebred dogs and to determine association with age, gender and breed. Four cases of DISH provided information on the appearance of canine DISH. The prevalence of DISH and spondylosis was 3.8% (78/2041) and 18.0% (367/2041), respectively. Of dogs with DISH, 67.9% (53/78) also had spondylosis, whereas 14.0% (53/367) of dogs with spondylosis also had DISH. Dogs with DISH and/or spondylosis were significantly older than those without spinal exostosis. The prevalence of DISH and spondylosis was 40.6% (28/69) and 55.1% (38/69), respectively, in Boxer dogs. Nineteen smaller breeds were not affected by DISH, but showed signs of spondylosis; only standard Poodles appeared not to be affected by either disorder. Radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and/or histopathology were used to investigate four DISH cases. It was concluded that spondylosis and DISH can co-occur in dogs. DISH has probably been previously under-diagnosed and mistaken for severe spondylosis. The diagnosis can be made using radiography, CT or MRI. On histology, DISH can be distinguished from spondylosis by the location (ventral longitudinal ligament) and extent of new bone formation. 相似文献

The long-term survival, disease-free fractions, and the complications of hypophysectomy in 150 dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) were examined in a prospective study. Long-term survival and disease-free fractions in relation to pituitary size were analyzed by the Kaplan-Meijer estimate procedure. The 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-year estimated survival rates were 84% (95% confidence interval [CI], 76-89%), 76% (67-83%), 72% (62-79%), and 68% (55-77%), respectively. Treatment failures included procedure-related mortalities (12 dogs) and incomplete hypophysectomies (9 dogs). The 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-year estimated relapse-free fractions were 88% (CI: 80-93%), 75% (64-83%), 66% (54-76%), and 58% (45-70%), respectively. Postoperative reduction of tear production (58 eyes in 47 dogs) was often reversible but remained low until death in 11 eyes of 10 dogs. Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) occurred more frequently (62%) in dogs with enlarged pituitaries than in dogs with nonenlarged pituitaries (44%). Survival and disease-free fractions after hypophysectomy were markedly higher in dogs with nonenlarged pituitaries than in dogs with enlarged pituitaries. Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy is an effective treatment for PDH in dogs. The survival and disease-free fractions after hypophysectomy decrease and the incidence of CDI increases with increasing pituitary size. Therefore, early diagnosis of PDH is important and transsphenoidal hypophysectomy is expected to have the best outcome when used as primary treatment for dogs with nonenlarged or moderately enlarged pituitaries. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate treatment of antebrachial growth deformities (AGD) with a lengthening procedure using a circular external skeletal fixation (CESF) system and to determine prognostic factors. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Thirty-four dogs with unilateral AGD. METHODS: Length deficits, angular and rotational deformities, elbow incongruity (EI), osteoarthritis (OA) of the elbow and carpal joint, function, and cosmesis were determined before and after a CESF lengthening procedure. RESULTS: On admission, EI (21 dogs; 62%), OA of the elbow joint (17 dogs; 50%), carpal OA (12 dogs; 35%), and concomitant elbow and carpal OA (5 dogs; 7%) were common findings. Treatment significantly improved function (normal, 20 dogs; 60%) and cosmesis (normal, 22 dogs; 65%). Angular and rotational deformities were almost completely corrected with small remaining length deficits. Elbow and carpal OA increased significantly during the follow-up period. Significant correlations were demonstrated between initial elbow OA and final function (R=0.42, P=.02), initial function and final function (R=0.41, P=.02), and initial ulnar and radial deficit and final cosmesis (R=0.58, P=.0001 and R=0.45, P=.008). CONCLUSIONS: Treatment of AGD by a CESF lengthening procedure was successful despite small remaining length deficits. Initial elbow OA, function, and ulnar and radial length deficits are prognostic factors in the treatment of AGD. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Initial elbow OA and initial function are prognostic factors in predicting the functional outcome of treatment of AGD with a CESF lengthening procedure in the dog. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the reproducibility and accuracy of computed tomographic (CT) measurements of pituitary gland dimensions in healthy dogs. ANIMALS: 35 healthy sexually intact adult dogs. PROCEDURES: 2 observers independently viewed CT images of the skull in 35 dogs twice. Pituitary gland height, width, length, and volume and pituitary gland height-to-brain area ratio (P:B ratio) were measured or calculated. Intraobserver and interobserver agreement indexes (AIs) were calculated for pituitary gland dimensions. Computed tomography was performed also on 5 phantoms, and both observers measured phantom dimensions twice. True-value AIs were calculated for the phantom study. RESULTS: The mean +/- SD interobserver AI between observer 1 and 2 for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio was 0.90 +/- 0.07. The intraobserver AI for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio was 0.97 +/- 0.04 for observer 1 and 0.94 +/- 0.04 for observer 2. The intra and interobserver AIs for the other dimensions were lower than those for pituitary gland height and the P:B ratio. All phantom dimensions on CT images were underestimated significantly, compared with their true values. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The intra- and interobserver AIs for pituitary gland dimension measurements on CT images were high. However, the same observer preferably should perform serial measurements. Window settings influence pituitary gland dimension measurements, and predetermined window settings are recommended to make comparisons among dogs. Pituitary gland dimension measurements made from CT images in our study underestimated the true values. 相似文献

Radiographic examination of the antebrachium was performed in 16 healthy Great Danes, raised under standardized conditions, at six-week intervals from 9 to 27 weeks of age. The dogs were fed according to the National Research Council's nutrient requirements of dogs (1974). The development of the secondary ossification centers and the growth in length of the radius and ulna were noted. In the majority of dogs changes in the shape and structure of the distal ulnar metaphysis resembled disturbances in cartilage maturation and bone maturation and remodelling. An improvement in the radio-graphic appearance of the distal ulnar metaphysis was noted at the age of 27 weeks. It is concluded that the delicate processes that are involved in skeletal development may be frequently disturbed in fast growing, giant-breed dogs, without causing clinical problems. 相似文献
