Previous experiments have indicated that under greenhouse and hydroponic conditions, spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) produces higher yields, more tillers and dry matter when supplied with mixtures of NH4 and NO3 than when supplied with only one of them. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of selected ammonium and nitrate mixtures on dry matter yield, content of soluble protein, and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase) and glutamine synthetase (GS) enzymatic activities. Cultivar ‘Salamanca’ wheat plants, 21 days old, were grown in one of five solutions containing one of the following: 7/0, 5/2, 3.5/3.5, 2/5 or 0/7 meq l‐1 of NH4NO3. After two weeks of treatment applications, the highest dry matter production in both roots and shoots of the 35‐day‐old plants was observed in plants receiving the 2/5 NH4/NO3 ratio. The same response was observed on the accumulation of soluble protein and the potential activity of PEPCase. The specific activity of PEPCase was related to the plant applications of ammonium. Treatments 3.5/3.5 and 2/5 NH4/NO3 ratio enhanced leaf GS activity between 28 and 57 days, and it was consistently 300–500% higher than root activity during the same period. Dry weight of the leaves, stems and grain showed the highest yields with those treatments at the physiological maturity of grains (105 days). 相似文献

Nitrogen (N) mineralization from black oat residues (Avena strigosa), with or without previous application of herbicides, and its utilization by corn crop were investigated. The experiments were performed in a completely randomized setup, with three treatments and ten replicates. The treatments were: A) control - corn grown in soil with residues of black oats harvested without herbicide application; B) glyphosate - corn grown in soil with residues of glyphosate-desiccated black oat; and C) glufosinate - corn grown in soil with residues of black oat previously desiccated with glufosinate-ammonium. The remaining black oat residues on the soil surface were smaller in the control treatment than in glyphosate and glufosinate treatments. Black oat residues from the control treatment released 30% and 20% more carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), respectively, than from herbicide treatments. Microbial biomass carbon, total and mineral soil N arising from black oat residues were reduced by herbicide management. Black oat residues treated with glyphosate reduced corn total-N by 16%; however, dry mass yield was not affected by the treatments. Herbicide application on black oat reduced the total amount of residue-released nitrogen in the corn kernels, leaves and the whole plant. The growth of nine multipurpose woody legumes was evaluated in nursery conditions. These species, belonging to the genera Acacia, Leucaena, Lysiloma, Prosopis and Pithecellobium, inhabit both primary and secondary tropical deciduous and thorn forests. The total length of the experiments was 165 days. At a variable frequency, the following four variables were measured: (1) relative growth rate (RGR), (2) root/shoot ratio (R/S), (3) root length/root dry weight ratio (RL/RDW), and (4) stem length (SL). The temporal behavior of these variables differed greatly among species. A direct relationship between seed weight and initial biomass production was initially found; however, the effect of seed size on biomass production was lost as plants aged. At the initial harvest, RGR values did not differ significantly among species, but they did at the end of the experiment; Pithecellobium dulce had the lowest final RGR. The three Acacia species had the highest biomass productions and highest R/S ratios but the lowest RL/RDW ratios; A. farnesiana and Lysiloma divaricata had the largest mean SL, whereas the smallest mean SL corresponded to the two Leucaena species and to Lysiloma acapulcensis. Several recommendations concerning the management of plants in the nursery and the optimal timing for transplanting the seedlings to reforestation sites are provided. 相似文献

Spatial distribution of soil nematode populations in Antarctic terrestrial ecosystems is tightly controlled by environmental factors and thus highly sensitive to changes in soil properties. Increases in the magnitude and frequency of episodic warming events as well as eventual warming trends are likely to result in increased water availability due to glacial melting and permafrost thaw, and may also incite changes in soil physical and chemical characteristics that determine nematode habitat suitability. We hypothesized that climate warming would result in new suitable soil habitats leading to heightened diversity and activity in nematode communities. In order to test this hypothesis, we compared nematode populations in patches of soil wetted by naturally enhanced permafrost thaw versus adjacent soils unaffected by thaw. We found that thaw sites had significantly lower nematode abundances and living to dead ratios, contradicting our hypothesis. We also observed significantly altered soil texture (finer particle size), lower pH and higher salinity in permafrost seeps. These observations suggest that current and future changes in climate may alter soil properties and result in significant changes in nematode population structure, distribution and function. 相似文献

Eastern populations of the North American regal fritillary, Argynnis idalia Drury (1773), have been largely extirpated over the past half century. Here we report on the last remaining population of eastern regal fritillaries, located within a military installation in south-central Pennsylvania. Samples were obtained from field specimens during two years of annual monitoring, and from females collected for captive rearing over a five year period. Nuclear microsatellite and mitochondrial sequence data do not suggest subdivision within this population, but excess nuclear homozygosity indicates negative impacts on genetic diversity likely due to small population size and potential inbreeding effects. Molecular assays did not detect Wolbachia endosymbionts in field specimens of regal fritillary, but sympatric Argynnis sister species showed high prevalence of Wolbachia infected individuals. Our results inform ongoing conservation and reintroduction projects, designed to protect the last remaining regal fritillary population from extirpation in the eastern United States. 相似文献
