Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) density and growth were assessed 9–12 years after stand establishment to determine whether mechanical site preparation (MSP) affects crop tree quality. Study sites were either treated with disc trenching or ripper ploughing and planted with white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) seedlings immediately after harvest (treated) or were undisturbed since harvest (control). Stands were surveyed during the summer of 2002 with standard regeneration survey plots. Results show that aspen stem density and height were lower in MSP-treated areas relative to untreated areas. Diameter growth rates were unaffected by treatment, however the percentage of stem discolouration was higher in untreated control stands compared to site prepared areas. The results of this study indicate that there are no long-term benefits to carry out MSP for aspen promotion. However, as MSP does not appear to seriously harm the aspen crop, we suggest that this treatment can still be used on sites where aspen densities may be low without treatment (e.g., sites with extremely low soil temperatures, poor soil aeration, or vigorous competitive vegetation) or where a mixture of aspen and planted spruce are desired.  相似文献

Stem sapwood hydraulic permeability, tree leaf area, sapwood basal area, earlywood to latewood ratio of annual rings, radial variation in hydraulic permeability and stem hydraulic capacity were examined in dominant (D), codominant (CD) and suppressed (SP) lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud.) trees growing on medium and poor sites. Hydraulic permeability on a sapwood area basis (ks) was lower in suppressed trees (0.71 x 10(-12) m2) compared to dominants (1.97 x 10(-12) m2) and codominants (1.79 x 10(-12) m2), and higher on medium than on poor sites. The leaf/sapwood area ratio (S) varied with crown dominance position (D > CD > SP) but not by site type. Leaf specific conductivity (kL) did not vary between crown classes or site types. The relationship between leaf area and stem hydraulic supply capacity (Q*) was strong, but differed among crown classes. Dominant trees and trees from the medium sites had a greater proportion of earlywood in outer rings of sapwood than suppressed trees. Sapwood permeability declined from the cambium to the sapwood-heartwood boundary in all samples, but the decline was more gradual in dominant trees compared to codominant and suppressed trees; differences in the radial variation in sapwood permeability may be related to differences in S. Sapwood permeability is positively related to crown dominance, whereas subdominant (CD and SP) trees have greater Q* in relation to leaf area, leading us to propose that this may give subdominant trees a survival advantage, slowing self-thinning.  相似文献

Effects of four N sources and two defoliation treatments on growth and nitrogenase activity of Gliricidia sepium (Jacq.) Walp seedlings were studied in a greenhouse. All nutrients were supplied in irrigation water to the sterile growing medium. The N sources were: (1) 100 mg l(-1) of N supplied as NO(3) (-) (high-NO(3) (-)), (2) 50 mg l(-1) of N supplied as NO(3) (-) and inoculation with Rhizobium spp. medium-NO(3) (-)), (3)100 mg l(-1) of N supplied as NH(4)NO(3), and (4) inoculation with Rhizobium spp without mineral N (N(2)). At 35 weeks after sowing, mean total biomass was 130.5, 50.5, 22.9 and 17.4 g seedling(-1) in the NH(4)NO(3), N(2), medium-NO(3) (-) and high-NO(3) (-) treatments, respectively. The root/shoot ratio was high in all of the N treatments (1.73-2.77) because the seedlings had big taproots. The medium-NO(3) (-) treatment completely inhibited nodulation, whereas seedlings in the N(2) treatment were profusely nodulated. At 32 weeks after sowing, groups of seedlings in the N(2) and high-NO(3) (-) treatments were subjected to 50 or 100% defoliation. Closed-chamber acetylene reduction assays of intact root systems were conducted to compare nitrogenase activity at 7, 14 and 28 days after defoliation (DAD). At 7 and 14 DAD, nitrogenase activity of completely and partially defoliated seedlings was about 10 and 60%, respectively, of that of undefoliated controls. At 28 DAD, nitrogenase activity of completely defoliated seedlings was twice the predefoliation value, whereas nitrogenase activity of partially defoliated seedlings was only 87% of the predefoliation value. Recovery of nitrogenase activity was strongly correlated with foliage regrowth in the completely defoliated seedlings, but not in the partially defoliated seedlings. Abundant belowground C and N reserves in the large taproot probably contributed to the rapid recovery from defoliation. Accumulation of belowground biomass may also improve defoliation tolerance of mature trees.  相似文献

The avian coronavirus infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) strain Beaudette is an embryo-adapted virus that has extended species tropism in cell culture. In order to understand the acquired tropism of the Beaudette strain, we compared the S protein sequences of several IBV strains. The Beaudette strain was found to contain a putative heparan sulfate (HS)-binding site, indicating that the Beaudette virus may use HS as a selective receptor. To ascertain the requirements of cell-surface HS for Beaudette infectivity, we assayed for infectivity in the presence of soluble heparin as a competitor and determined infectivity in mutant cell lines with no HS or glycosaminoglycan expression. Our results indicate that HS plays a role as an attachment factor for IBV, working in concert with other factors like sialic acid to mediate virus binding to cells, and may explain in part the extended tropism of IBV Beaudette.  相似文献

Uptake of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) by calves in the first days of life from colostrum, milk and faeces is regarded an important moment of transmission. The objective of this study was to quantify the association between the MAP status of dams as determined by the presence of MAP DNA and antibody in colostrum and that of DNA in faeces and the environment with subsequent MAP shedding of their daughters. A cohort of 117 dam-daughter pairs giving birth/being born on eight commercial dairy farms with endemic paratuberculosis was followed where colostrum, faecal and environmental samples (dust) were analysed for the presence of MAP using an IS900 real-time PCR. Antibodies in colostrum were measured by ELISA. Analysis of dust samples showed that on all farms environmental MAP exposure occurred continuously. In significantly more colostrum samples (48%) MAP DNA was detected compared to faecal samples (37%). MAP specific antibodies were present in 34% of the colostrum samples. In total MAP DNA was present in faecal samples of 41% of the daughters at least once during the sampling period. The association between faecal shedding in the offspring and the dam MAP status defined by MAP PCR on colostrum, MAP PCR on faeces or ELISA on colostrum was determined by an exact cox regression analysis for discrete data. The model indicated that the hazard for faecal shedding in daughters born to MAP positive dams was not significantly different compared to daughters born to MAP negative dams. When born to a dam with DNA positive faeces the HR was 1.05 (CI 0.6; 1.8) and with DNA positive colostrum the HR was 1.17 (CI 0.6; 2.3). When dam status was defined by a combination of both PCR outcomes (faeces and colostrum) and the ELISA outcome the HR was 1.26 (CI 0.9; 1.9). Therefore, this study indicates that neither the presence of MAP DNA in colostrum, MAP DNA in faeces nor the presence of MAP antibodies in colostrum of the dam significantly influences the hazard of MAP shedding in their subsequent daughters up to the age of two years when raised in a contaminated environment.  相似文献

Non-forested drylands occupy 43% of the world's land surface yet they are not currently regarded as important in sequestering carbon due to overuse and poor management. Seventy percent of drylands have already undergone moderate to severe desertification and an additional 3.5% drops out of economic production each year. Reversing the trend towards desertification through cultivation of halophytes on saline lands, revegetation of degraded rangelands and other innovative conservation measures could result in net C sequestration in dryland soils of 0.5–1.0 Gt yr?1 at a cost of $10–18 t?1 C, based on a 100 yr scenario. Investment in antidesertification measures in the world's drylands appears to be an economical method to mitigate CO2 buildup in the atmosphere while accomplishing a major international objective of restoring dryland productivity.  相似文献

Purpose

Monitored natural recovery (MNR) combined with a thin-layer cap (TLC), often referred to as enhanced monitored natural recovery (EMNR), has the potential to accelerate and improve the effectiveness of MNR as a remedial strategy while minimizing widespread disturbance to the existing habitat. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a nominal 15-cm thin-layer sand cap as an EMNR remedial strategy to address sediments that were moderately contaminated with the chlorinated pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its derivatives, collectively DDX.

Materials and methods

Physical, chemical, and biological measurements were conducted pre-remedy placement and 2, 14, and 25 months post-placement. Measurements were used to evaluate (1) TLC stability; (2) bottom-up mixing of the TLC; (3) advection through the TLC; (4) characteristics of newly deposited sediment atop the EMNR layer compared to pre-remedy surface sediment conditions; (5) changes in contaminant bioavailability; and (6) physical impacts to the benthic community.

Results and discussion

Significant reductions were observed from measurements conducted pre- and post-placement in surface sediment (84–97%), porewater (33–75%), and tissue concentrations (Lumbriculus variegatus deployed in situ) (72–82%). A 63 to 72% decrease in DDX depositional mass flux also was observed. Multiple lines of evidence indicated that the TLC material remained stable. Deposition of suspended material with low concentrations of DDX influenced low concentrations in the surface sediments. No adverse effects were observed on the benthic invertebrate community after TLC placement, and ecological metrics indicated increases in benthic community health, even in the short time period (2 months) following TLC placement.

Conclusions

This demonstration showed that EMNR can be effective at reducing biological exposure in surface sediments while minimizing short-term disturbances to benthic communities at sites where MNR is a remedy option, but natural deposition rates are inadequate to achieve cleanup goals within a reasonable timeframe.
