The availability of iron is known to exert a controlling influence on biological productivity in surface waters over large areas of the ocean and may have been an important factor in the variation of the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide over glacial cycles. The effect of iron in the Southern Ocean is particularly important because of its large area and abundant nitrate, yet iron-enhanced growth of phytoplankton may be differentially expressed between waters with high silicic acid in the south and low silicic acid in the north, where diatom growth may be limited by both silicic acid and iron. Two mesoscale experiments, designed to investigate the effects of iron enrichment in regions with high and low concentrations of silicic acid, were performed in the Southern Ocean. These experiments demonstrate iron's pivotal role in controlling carbon uptake and regulating atmospheric partial pressure of carbon dioxide.  相似文献

The effect of recovery from training has not been studied in horses. Therefore, the effect of recovery was examined with exercise of known effect within a conditioning period (CP). A standardized exercise test was performed at the beginning of CP to determine v4, v10, and v180 (horse’s speed, which produced a blood lactate concentration of 4 and 10 mmol/L and a heart rate of 180 beats/min). Six horses were conditioned for three periods of 2 weeks, 5 times per fortnight at their individual v10 for two bouts of 5 minutes on a treadmill. Every 2 weeks of conditioning was followed by 1 week with reduced workload. Standardized exercise test was repeated after each 2 weeks of conditioning and 2 weeks after finishing CP. Exercise speed was individually adapted to the new v10 for every 2 weeks of conditioning. In addition, peak oxygen consumption before, after 3 weeks of conditioning, and at the end of the CP was measured. The mean v4 increased steadily during CP. v180 did not change, whereas peak oxygen consumption increased between the beginning and after 3 weeks of conditioning and leveled off thereafter. In conclusion, reducing the workload for 1 week after 2 weeks of conditioning 5 times per fortnight at v10 for two bouts of 5 minutes allowed for a continuous increase of v4, but the extent of the increase was smaller than in another study with a similar conditioning program but for the recovery week. There is limited knowledge of biochemical processes in low carbon content soils of semiarid regions under different land use and management. This study investigated several enzyme activities of C, N, P, and S transformations in semiarid soils with different clay (10–21 %) and sand (59–85 %) contents that were under conservation reserve program (CRP), native rangeland (NR), and cropland (CL) under sunflowers (Eriophyllum ambiguum (Gray)), continuous cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), or in rotations with wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) in West Texas, USA. Soils under CRP and NR showed higher total C and N contents than cultivated soils under continuous cotton, but soil pH (6.7–8.4) was not affected by the management or land use studied. The activities of β‐glucosidase, β‐glucosaminidase, arylamidase, acid and alkaline phosphatase, phosphodiesterase, and arylsulfatase (mg product (kg soil)–1 h–1) were lower in CL under continuous cotton compared to cotton in rotation with other crops, CRP, and NR. The enzyme activities were also lower when compared to soils from other regions. Linear regression analyses indicated positive correlations between enzyme activities and total C (r values up to 0.96, P < 0.01). There was a positive relationship between enzyme activities and total N, but soil pH showed the opposite trend. Enzyme activities were significantly intercorrelated with r values up to 0.98 (P < 0.001). The specific enzyme activities (mg product (g organic C)–1) were lower in continuous cotton in comparison to the uncultivated soils (i.e., NR and CRP) reflecting differences in organic matter quantity and quality due to cultivation. Among the enzymes studied, the specific activities of β‐glucosidase and arylamidase showed a more pronounced decrease with increasing soil depth. In general, soils under CRP or wheat‐cotton rotations revealed higher enzyme activities than soils under the common agricultural practice for these regions, i.e., continuous cotton under conventional tillage.  相似文献

Uncultivated plants are an important part of agricultural systems and play a key role in the survival of rural marginalized groups such as women, children, and the poor. Drawing on the gender, environment, and development literature and on the notion of women’s social location, this paper examines the ways in which gender, ethnicity, and economic status determine women’s roles in uncultivated plant management in Ixhuapan and Ocozotepec, two indigenous communities of Veracruz, Mexico. The first is inhabited by Nahua and the second by Popoluca peoples. Information was gathered through group and individual interviews and a food frequency survey. Results show that the gender ideology prevailing in each community, resulting from distinct ethnic affiliations and economic contexts, shapes women’s plant management. In Ixhuapan, Nahua women are used to leaving their community to generate income, while in Ocozotepec men are considered the main breadwinners and are the mediators between Popoluca households and the larger society. Nahua women gather quelites at the cornfields more often than their men, and more often than their female counterparts in Ocozotepec. They also manage and sell plants from their homegardens at higher percentages than Popoluca women. However, women in both communities use intensely the plants of their homegardens and play a key role in biodiversity conservation and cultural permanence.

Canine cutaneous mast cell tumours (cMCTs) of the pinna have been associated with an aggressive biological behaviour, although data remain scarce. The knowledge acquired over the past years on histologic gradings, and the value of lymph node (LN) staging, may help in better characterizing this anatomical presentation. The first aim was to describe the frequency, location, and histologic appearance of LN metastases in cMCT of the pinna. A second aim was to evaluate prognosis. Medical records of dogs with cMCT of the pinna, that underwent tumour and sentinel (SLN) or regional LN (RLN) excision, were reviewed. The influence of potential prognostic variables on time to progression (TTP) and tumour-specific survival (TSS) was investigated. Thirty-nine dogs were included: 19 (48.7%) had Kiupel high-grade (K-HG) and 20 (51.3%) had low-grade (K-LG) MCTs. Eighteen (46.1%) dogs underwent SLN mapping: the superficial cervical LN was at least one of SLN in 17 (94.4%) cases. Twenty-two (56.4%) dogs had LN metastases; the superficial cervical LN was always involved. On multivariable analysis, only K-HG was associated with increased risk of progression (p = .043) and tumour-related death (p = .021). Median TTP and TSS were 270 and 370 days in K-HG, respectively; these were not reached in dogs with K-LG tumours (p < .01). cMCTs of the pinna are often K-HG and are also associated with a higher frequency of LN metastasis; however, we confirmed the independent prognostic value of histologic grading. A multimodal treatment may lead to favourable long-term outcome. Moreover, the superficial cervical LN is most often the SLN.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) is a promising crop for improving the nutritional quality of foods, because of the presence of broad natural variability for the content of carotenoids. One hundred Italian and nine public lines were screened by PCR to identify the alleles of Hydroxylase3 (HYD3) and Lycopene epsilon cyclase (LCYE) genes, codifying for key enzymes of the carotenoid pathway and associated with high or low β-carotene contents. Nineteen selected genotypes carrying different alleles were grown in 2011 and/or 2012, and used to obtain F1 seeds. HPLC analysis highlighted the richness in zeaxanthin and β-cryptoxanthin of Italian germplasm (mean values 12.63 and 2.88 mg/kg d.m., respectively). The percentage of positive and significant mid parent heterosis (MPH) and best parent heterosis (BPH) values (51% and 29%) indicated the presence of a high heterotic response for carotenoids. The compounds on the same branch of the pathway were found to be positively correlated; on the contrary, no consistent correlation was observed between the different HYD3 alleles and β-carotene content. Finally, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was also measured. These lines resulted therefore as interesting raw materials for the market of maize-based foods.  相似文献

Meiotic recombination in budding yeast requires two RecA-related proteins, Rad51 and Dmc1, both of which form filaments on DNA capable of directing homology search and catalyzing formation of homologous joint molecules (JMs) and strand exchange. With use of a separation-of-function mutant form of Rad51 that retains filament-forming but not JM-forming activity, we show that the JM activity of Rad51 is fully dispensable for meiotic recombination. The corresponding mutation in Dmc1 causes a profound recombination defect, demonstrating Dmc1's JM activity alone is responsible for meiotic recombination. We further provide biochemical evidence that Rad51 acts with Mei5-Sae3 as a Dmc1 accessory factor. Thus, Rad51 is a multifunctional protein that catalyzes recombination directly in mitosis and indirectly, via Dmc1, during meiosis.  相似文献
