Prior to trauma, intraoperative ultrasound of the spinal canal in 31 normal dogs was performed through a hemilaminectomy in the left pedicle of L2. A ventral compressive model of spinal cord injury was performed as part of a clinical drug trial. Maximum ultrasonographic spinal cord diameter ranged from 4.9–7.2 mm (5.7 × 0.6). Significant positive correlation (p = 0.023, r = 0.49) was found between age and spinal cord diameter. The dura mater was a separate, well-defined, echogenic horizontal line in 28 (90%) dogs, dorsally, and in 29 (94%) dogs, ventrally. Cerebrospinal fluid was anechoic. Eighteen (58%) dogs had a well-defined anechoic dorsal subarachnoid space, whereas 22 (71%) had a well-defined ventral space. Pia mater was thin but strongly echogenic and covered spinal cord. Central canal was a double hyperechoic line in 17 (55%) dogs and a single-line in 14 (45%) dogs. A difference in the ultrasonographic appearance between gray and white matter was not seen. Epidural fat and connective tissue was a lobular echogenic material in the ventral epidural space. The periosteal-vertebral body interface was seen as a bright curvilinear echo with distal acoustic shadowing. Spinal cord parenchyma could be classified subjectively into four groups based upon ultrasonographic appearance. Spinal cord parenchyma had a uniform hypoechogenicity in 8 (27%) dogs (Group 1), subtle low level echoes in 7 (23%) dogs (Group 2), multiple clusters of defined echogenic foci in 12 (37%) dogs (Group 3), and multiple sharply-defined linear echoes in 4 (13%) dogs (Group 4). There was a significant relationship between pre-trauma ultrasonographic appearance of the spinal cord and histopathology 21 days after trauma. One (13%) dog in Group 1, 4 (57%) dogs in Group 2,10 (91%) dogs in Group 3, and 3 (75%) dogs in Group 4 had malacia on histological evaluation. Therefore, dogs with echogenic spinal cords or linear echoes within cord parenchyma were significantly more likely to develop malacia rather than Wallerian degeneration after induced spinal cord trauma (p = 0.002). Spinal cord echogenicity may indicate vascularity in a segment of spinal cord and might be prognostic following spinal cord trauma. No complications were found related to intraoperative ultrasound. Hematoma or fibrous tissue formation appeared to impede percutaneous ultrasound of the spinal cord in dogs re-evaluated forty-eight hours and one week after surgery. 相似文献

In this study, alteration in the follicular fluid composition and luteal function was investigated in the buffalo with endometritis. Genitalia were classified into cytological and purulent endometritis on the basis of polymorphonuclear cell cut off while non‐endometritis served as control (n = 10/group). In the follicular phase, the number of surface follicles was counted, diameter of the largest follicle was measured and the follicular fluid was assayed for total protein, cholesterol, malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oestradiol (E2) and progesterone (P4). The P4 content of corpus luteum during mid‐luteal phase was estimated by radioimmunoassay. Ovaries from the follicular phase of oestrous cycle showed no significant difference in the total number of surface follicles, size of the largest follicle and volume of follicular fluid in the buffaloes with and without endometritis (p > .05). However, the antral fluid of the largest follicle from the genitalia of buffalo with cytological and purulent endometritis showed a significant decrease in the concentration of total protein, cholesterol, TAC and E2 and a significant increase in the concentration of MDA and P4 (p < .05). Two experiments were conducted to determine (i) factors influencing calf temperament at weaning, (ii) association between heifer–calf temperament at weaning and temperament at breeding and (iii) effect of heifer–calf temperament on pregnancy rate per artificial insemination (P/AI). In experiment 1, beef cows and their calves (n = 285) from three farms were used. Sire docility estimated progeny difference (EPD) score, birth type (normal or assisted), calf gender, calf behaviour (during 1st 4 weeks) and calf health status (until weaning) were recorded. Cows and calves were assigned a temperament score (0—calm; 1—excitable), and all cows were given a body condition score (BCS, 1–9; 1—emaciated; 9—obese) at weaning. Calf's illness (p < .05), low sire docility EPD score (p < .05), altered gait (p < .05), altered resting behaviour (p < .01), reduced/no play behaviour (p < .05) and cow excitable temperament (p < .001) increased calf excitable temperament at weaning. In experiment 2, replacement heifer–calves (n = 758) from 12 farms were assigned a temperament score at weaning and later at breeding. Blood from 40 calves at weaning and 31 heifers at initiation of synchronization (same animals) was collected by coccygeal venipuncture for determination of circulating cortisol and substance P concentrations. Heifers were assigned a BCS and reproductive tract score (RTS, 1–5; 1—immature, acyclic; 5—mature, cyclic), synchronized for fixed time AI, observed for oestrus and were artificially inseminated. Cortisol concentrations were increased in excitable heifer–calves compared to calm heifer–calves at weaning (p < .05), and substance P was increased in excitable compared to calm females both at weaning and breeding (p < .05). Low sire EPD docility score (p < .01), heifer–calf excitable temperament at weaning increased excitable temperament at breeding (p < .01). Controlling for BCS categories (p < .01), oestrous expression (p < .0001) and temperament at breeding by oestrous expression (p < .05), the calf's excitable temperament at weaning (p < .001) reduced P/AI (Calm, 62.7 (244/389) vs. Excitable, 53.4% (197/369); p < .01). In conclusion, selection of docile cows and sires with greater docility EPD score should be given consideration to reduce calf excitement. Twenty retinas from 10 cats were evaluted for dopamine (DA) and its metabolites dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC), 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT) and homovanillic acid (HVA) by high pressure liquid chromatography and electrochemical detection. Dopamine was present in all 20 retinas at a mean concentration of 3.00±0.54 ng/mg protein. Dihydroxyphenylacetic acid, 3-MT and HVA were detected in 16, 14 and 9 retinas respectively.In retinas in which these metabolites were detectable, they were present in the following mean concentrations: DOPAC, 1.07±0.21 ng/mg protein; 3-MT, 3.44±0.97 ng/mg protein and HVA, 4.54±1.05 ng/mg protein. Significantly higher concentrations of 3-MT (p=0.0108, paired t test) and HVA (p=0.0166, paired t test) than DOPAC were present in cat retina. Linear correlation analysis between DA and its metabolites indicated that the 3-MT and DOPAC concentrations correlated well with each other and with the amount of DA in cat retina. The concentrations of the end product metabolite, HVA, had poor correlations with the concentrations of 3-MT, DOPAC or DA. These data indicated that once DA is released in cat retina it can be metabolized to 3-MT, DOPAC and HVA. 相似文献

The pathogenicity of three isolates of porcine respiratory coronavirus (AR310, LEPP and 1894) from the USA was assessed in specific pathogen-free pigs. Pigs inoculated with 1894 developed mild respiratory disease and pigs inoculated with AR310 and LEPP developed moderate respiratory disease from four to 10 days after they were inoculated, but all the pigs recovered fully by 14 days after inoculation. Gross and microscopic examination revealed mild (1894) to moderate (AR310 and LEPP) multifocal bronchointerstitial pneumonia from four to 10 days after inoculation. The lesions were characterised by necrotising bronchiolitis, septal infiltration with mononuclear cells, and a mixed alveolar exudate. This study compared endometrial cytology vis‐a‐vis uterine fluid cytology for assessment of uterine health in clinically normal and subclinical endometritis (SE)‐affected buffaloes. Uterine fluid samples and endometrial samples were collected from the buffaloes (n = 38) at oestrus using blue sheath and cytobrush, respectively. The smears were stained with Field stain for 3 minutes, and a minimum of 400 cells were counted in each smear for determination of the percentage of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leucocyte. The incidence of subclinical endometritis, based on the cytobrush cytology, was 23.08%. The correlation between cytobrush cytology with uterine fluid cytology was positive and significant (r = .37; p = .02). The ratio of PMN leucocyte in cytobrush cytology to uterine fluid cytology was 1:2.4. ROC analysis revealed that the threshold value of 6.16% PMN leucocyte in uterine fluid cytology showed a diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of 100% in differentiating normal from SE‐affected buffaloes. In conclusion, collection of uterine fluid was easier compared to collection of endometrial samples using cytobrush and the percentage of PMN leucocyte in uterine fluid cytology can be used as a tool for diagnosis of subclinical endometritis in buffaloes. 相似文献

Specific-pathogen-free kittens experimentally infected with feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) subsequently demonstrated increased plasma levels of the arachidonic acid metabolites, leukotriene (LT) B4 and prostaglandin (PG) E2. Significant increases (P<0.025) in LTB4 plasma levels occurred in all (5/5) FIPV-inoculated kittens on postchallenge-exposure days (PCD) 7 and 14 vs PCD 0. Significant increases (P<0.05) in PGE2 plasma levels occurred in 80% (4/5) of FIPV-infected kittens on PCD 7 and 14. Maximal mean plasma levels of LTB4 and PGE2 occurred on PCD 7 (502.5±45.6 pg/ml and 1108.0±247.9 pg/ml, respectively). A positive correlation was found between LTB4 plasma levels and body temperature (r=0.609, P<0.01). Mean survival time in FIPV-inoculated kittens was 19.4±3.2 days. Gross lesions, including peritoneal or pleural effusions (or both) and connective tissue edema, indicated an increased vascular permeability in the FIPV-infected kittens. Histologically, lesions were characterized by pyogranulomatous inflammation. Immunofluorescent studies of tissues from FIPV-infected kittens demonstrated foci of polymorphonuclear leukocytes and FIPV-positive macrophages oriented around dilated blood vessels. Seemingly, arachidonic acid metabolites, including LTB4 or PGE2 released from macrophages, neutrophils or other cells, may be involved in the pathogenesis of FIP vascular and inflammatory lesions and in some of the clinical disease manifestations. 相似文献

A class of thermoelectric materials has been synthesized with a thermoelectric figure of merit ZT (where T is temperature and Z is a function of thermopower, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity) near 1 at 800 kelvin. Although these materials have not been optimized, this value is comparable to the best ZT values obtained for any previously studied thermoelectric material. Calculations indicate that the optimized material should have ZT values of 1.4. These ternary semiconductors have the general formula RM4X12 (where R is lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, or europium; M is iron, ruthenium, or osmium; and X is phosphorus, arsenic, or antimony) and represent a new approach to creating improved thermoelectric materials. Several alloys in the composition range CeFe4-xCoxSb12 or LaFe4-xCoxSb12 (0 < x < 4) have large values of ZT. 相似文献
