The rate at which minerals in the soil weather is affected by pH and concentration of organic solutes (DOC). The rates of release of Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Na, P and Si from a mineral soil sample to solutions of natural organic solutes and HCI (control) were determined at pH 3 and 4 for up to 17 weeks. Soil solutions were collected by centrifuging materials of O horizons from various soil types under four tree species (spruce, birch, oak, beech) and passed through a cation-exchange resin to yield H+-saturated organic solutes. The acceleration of the elements' release by the organic solutes was shown directly by the relative ligand effect (RLE), that is, the release rate in the organic solute solution divided by the release rate in the HCI solution (control) at the same pH. The RLE was greater at pH 4 than at pH 3, and it decreased for the elements in the order Fe > Ca > Mg > Al ≈ Si > K ≈ Na. This indicates that natural organic solutes are more important weathering agents at higher than lower pH and for weathering of mafic minerals rich in Ca, Fe and Mg than of felsic minerals such as K- and Na-feldspars. For all elements and at both pHs, RLE was strongly correlated with the concentration of DOC, which was also closely correlated with titratable acidity of the organic solutes. The important effect of soil type and tree species in producing weathering-promoting organic solutes therefore seems to be expressed through the concentration and not the composition of the organic soil solutes. 相似文献
While needles represent a proportionally large fraction of whole-plant hydraulic resistance, no studies to date have investigated how source–sink disturbances affect needle xylem structure. In this study, we evaluated structural changes in xylem in current-year needles of Scots pine 227 and 411 days after stem girdling (hereafter referred to as DAG). Maximum and minimum tracheid lumen diameters and therefore also the size of tracheid lumen areas increased in needles 227 DAG compared to control needles. In contrast, tracheid dimensions were similar in needles 411 DAG as in the control needles, but smaller xylem area and lower number of tracheids resulted in the lower theoretical needle hydraulic conductivity of those needles. Several needle xylem parameters were intercorrelated in both control and girdled trees. These observed changes provide a new understanding of the processes that occur following a source–sink disturbance. Considering anatomical parameters such as the number of tracheids, tracheid dimension, or needle xylem area, which are rarely described in physiological studies, could be helpful, for example, in understanding to tree hydraulic systems or for modeling gas exchange. Finally, empirical equations were developed to calculate needle theoretical hydraulic conductivity and the number of tracheids in needles using an easily measurable parameter of needle xylem area. 相似文献
The primary goal of this study was to analyse genetic variation within and among six Dachshund varieties in the Czech Republic using 10 microsatellites from StockMarks® Paternity Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Typing kit. A total of 632 Dachshunds were sampled – 99 Standard Smooth-haired, 72 Standard Long-haired, 272 Standard Wire-haired, 42 Miniature Smooth-haired, 73 Miniature Long-haired and 74 Miniature Wire-haired. Average observed heterozygosity and polymorphic information content ranged in particular Dachshund varieties between 0.58–0.70 and 0.57–0.64, respectively. Subsequent analysis of the population structure ( F -statistics; Nei's genetic identity) showed that Standard Dachshunds shared allele frequencies most closely with their miniature equivalents, and smooth coat type is closer to Wire-haired coat type than to the Long-haired one. Analysis of molecular variance revealed that 11.81% of the total variance occured among varieties. The value of combined exclusion probability (0.9955) validated usefulness of this panel of microsatellites for parentage verification in all analysed populations. We carried out 234 parentage verifications with 1.28% cases where parentage did not match. 相似文献
The dispersal of individuals among marine populations is of great importance to metapopulation dynamics, population persistence, and species expansion. Understanding this connectivity between distant populations is key to their effective conservation and management. For many marine species, population connectivity is determined largely by ocean currents transporting larvae and juveniles between distant patches of suitable habitat. Recent work has focused on the biophysics of marine larval dispersal and its importance to population dynamics, although few studies have evaluated the spatial and temporal patterns of this potential dispersal. Here, we show how an Eulerian advection–diffusion approach can be used to model the dispersal of coral larvae between reefs throughout the Tropical Pacific. We illustrate how this connectivity can be analyzed using graph theory—an effective approach for exploring patterns in spatial connections, as well as for determining the importance of each site and pathway to local and regional connectivity. Results indicate that the scale (average distance) of dispersal in the Pacific is on the order of 50–150 km, consistent with recent studies in the Caribbean (Cowen, et al. 2006). Patterns in the dispersal graphs highlight pathways for larval dispersal along major ocean currents and through island chains. A series of critical island ‘stepping stones’ are discovered providing potential pathways across the equatorial currents and connecting distant island groups. Patterns in these dispersal graphs highlight possible pathways for species expansions, reveal connected upstream/downstream populations, and suggest areas that might be prioritized for marine conservation efforts.
We suggest that the life histories of species within communities may differ among geographic locations and that communities from distinct biomes may respond uniquely to a given trajectory of landscape change. This paper presents initial tests relevant to these hypotheses. First, the representation of various life-history guilds in avifaunas from the Eastern Deciduous (EDF) and Pacific Northwest (PNW) forests were compared. Three guilds contained more species in the EDF community (large patch and/or habitat interior guild, small patch and/or edge guild, and fragmentation-sensitive guild). The guild of predators requiring large forest tracts was better represented in the PNW. Next, the relative sensitivity of each community to habitat change was ranked based on the life-history traits of their species. The EDF avifauna had a significantly higher index of sensitivity to both forest fragmentation and to landscape change in general. Among the birds with high scores for sensitivity to landscape change were several species that have received little conservation attention thus far including some associated with open-canopy habitats. Lastly, the validity of using life histories to predict community response to landscape change was supported by the fact that the sensitivity scores for PNW species correlated significantly with independent data on species population trends. While more rigorous analyses are suggested, we conclude that knowledge of life histories is useful for predicting community response to landscape change and that conservation strategies should be uniquely tailored to local communities. 相似文献
Due to increasing fragmentation of the boreal forests of Fennoscandia, a number of epiphytic lichens are now becoming threatened. Since these species typically are limited by a poor ability of dispersal, one possible but largely unexplored strategy for conservation is to disperse lichen material artificially into suitable habitats. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate survival and vitality in lichen fragments from Evernia divaricata (L.) Ach. and Ramalina dilacerata (Hoffm.) Hoffm. after transplantation into three different stand types situated in northern Sweden, using different fragment sizes and modes of transplantation. After one year, survival ranged between 85% and 97.5%, and new growth occurred at all transplantation sites. The study has shown that transplantations of small fragments might constitute a resource-efficient option for establishment of new populations of endangered lichen species, or for enlarging their populations at the present sites of occurrence. In addition, the mode of transplantation was of importance for fragment vitality. 相似文献
