Barley (Hordeum vulgare vulgare L.) is an ancient cereal grain, which upon domestication has evolved from largely a food grain to a feed and malting grain. However, barley food use today remains important in some cultures around the world, particularly in Asia and northern Africa, and there is renewed interest throughout the world in barley food because of its nutritional value. This review covers basic and general information on barley food use and barley grain processing for food use, as well as an in-depth look at several major aspects/traits of interest for barley food use including kernel hardness and colour, grain starch, and β-glucan contents. These traits are described in terms of their effects on processing and nutrition, as well as their inheritance and the prospects for barley improvement through breeding. Whereas, the aspects listed above have been studied relatively extensively in barley in terms of content, form, genetics, physiology, and in some cases nutritional quality, little is know about functional properties for processing and food product development. Renewed interest in barley for food uses largely centres around the effects of β-glucans on lowering blood cholesterol levels and glycemic index. Wholegrain barley foods also appear to be associated with increased satiety and weight loss. There is great potential to utilise barley in a large number of cereal-based food products as a substitute partially or wholly for currently used cereal grains such as wheat (Triticum aestivum), oat (Avena sativa), rice (Oryza sativa), and maize (Zea mays). 相似文献

Forest liming is a common measure to counteract soil acidification. In forest practice, lime is applied to the forest floor where it changes the chemical properties. However, little is known about the depth impact of liming and the depth translocation of lime components. To investigate the long-term impact of forest liming, several study plots have been established in the 1980s in Germany in stands with different site conditions. We analysed soil chemical data obtained during the last 28?years from 45 of the study plots. We examined the depth impact of liming and predicted the main factors responsible for the increase in Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg) stocks after liming in the mineral soil using multiple linear regression analyses (MLR). Stocks of Ca and Mg as well as base saturation (BS) showed a strong depth gradient with significant differences between limed and control plots down to 40?cm of the mineral soil. About 65–70?% of applied Ca and Mg were recovered in the forest floor and the upper 40?cm of the mineral soil. BS in 0–40?cm increased by a mean of 11?%. MLR models could explain 48–74?% of the variation in mean changes of Ca and Mg in 0–10, 10–20 and 20–40?cm soil depth when soil and climate variables, amount of applied lime and years after liming are included in the model. After testing the model robustness with a cross-validating procedure, we concluded that these models might be applied to many regions in Central Europe with comparable soil and climate conditions and thus, have widespread application. 相似文献

Kernel hardness is an important trait influencing postharvest handling, processing, and food product quality in cereal grains. Though well‐characterized in wheat, the basis of kernel hardness is still not completely understood in barley. Kernels of 959 barley breeding lines were evaluated for hardness using the Single Kernel Characterization System (SKCS). Barley lines exhibited a broad range of hardness index (HI) values at 30.1–91.9. Distribution of kernel diameter and weight were 1.7–2.9 mm and 24.9–53.7 mg, respectively. The proportion of hull was 10.2–20.7%. From the 959 breeding lines, 10 hulled spring barley lines differing in HI values (30.1–91.2) were selected to study the associations of HI with proportion of hull, kernel weight, diameter, vitreousness, protein, β‐glucan, and amylose content. Vitreousness, evaluated visually using a light box, showed a clear distinction between hard and soft kernels. Hard kernels appeared translucent, while soft kernels appeared opaque when illuminated from below on the light box. Kernel brightness (L*), determined as an indicator of kernel vitreousness, showed a significant negative correlation (r = –0.83, P < 0.01) with HI. Protein, β‐glucan, amylose content, proportion of hull, kernel weight, and diameter did not show any significant association with HI. 相似文献

The effects of dietary β‐hydroxy‐β‐methylbutyrate (HMB) supplementation during gestation on reproductive performance of sows and the mRNA expression of myogenic markers in skeletal muscle of neonatal pigs were determined. At day 35 of gestation, a total of 20 sows (Landrace × Yorkshire, at third parity) were randomly assigned to two groups, with each group receiving either a basal diet or the same diet supplemented with 4 g/day β‐hydroxy‐β‐methylbutyrate calcium (HMB‐Ca) until parturition. At parturition, the total and live litter size were not markedly different between treatments, however, the sows fed HMB diet had a decreased rate of stillborn piglets compared with the sows fed the control (CON) diets (p < 0.05). In addition, piglets from the sows fed HMB diet tended to have an increased birth weight (p = 0.08), and a reduced rate of low birth weight piglets (p = 0.05) compared with piglets from the CON sows. Nevertheless, lower feed intake during lactation was observed in the sows fed the HMB diet compared with those on the CON diet (p < 0.01). The relative weights of the longissimus dorsi (LD) and semitendinosus (ST) muscle were higher (p < 0.05) in neonatal pigs from the HMB than the CON sows. Furthermore, maternal HMB treatment increased the mRNA levels of the myogenic genes, including muscle regulatory factor‐4 (MRF4, p < 0.05), myogenic differentiation factor (MyoD) and insulin‐like growth factor‐1 (IGF‐1, p < 0.01). In conclusion, dietary HMB supplementation to sows at 4 g/day from day 35 of gestation to term significantly improves pregnancy outcomes and increases the expression of myogenic genes in skeletal muscle of neonatal piglets, but reduces feed intake of sows during lactation. 相似文献

This study investigated the effects on embryo growth and survival rate of feeding heavily‐fertilised spring grass, containing high levels of quickly‐degradable nitrogen, to pregnant cows. Forty‐eight lactating Holstein cows between 2 and 8 weeks pregnant were turned‐out, after a one‐week transition period onto high‐ or low‐nitrate pasture and fed a high‐ or low‐concentrate supplement. Cows grazing the High nitrate pasture had significantly higher milk and plasma urea concentrations than cows grazing the Control pasture, while cows which were fed less concentrate had a notably higher plasma ammonia. However, there was no evidence that an increased quickly‐degradable nitrogen (QDN) intake from pasture affected embryo survival or growth from 20 days onwards. This suggests that the impact of turnout on fertility mainly affects ovulation, fertilisation and/or the early embryo. 相似文献

Forty-five ovariectomised gilts in early gravidity received injections of progesterone doses between 120 mg and 40 mg as well as 250 micrograms/die of oestradiol-benzoate and oral application of 12 mg/die of norgestrel, the latter being administered in addition to the 40 mg dose of progesterone. The animals were killed between the 20th and 24th or on the 35th days of gravidity, before endometrial activities were determined of alkaline and acid phosphatases at various points of the uterus (centre and sides of ampullae and in-between ampullae). Under conditions of sufficient progesterone supply (120 mg/die and 100 mg/die), endometrial activities of both alkaline and acid phosphatases in the centre of ampullae were found to be higher than those in-between them. Activities were lower with inadequate progesterone supply (40 mg/die), and differences between points of sampling were less strongly pronounced for alkaline phosphatase. Endometrial glycogen concentrations in the centre of ampullae were lower than those in-between. Values in response to inadequate progesterone administration were lower than those following sufficient supply. With regard to glycogen concentrations, differences between points of sampling in the myometrium were below those in the endometrium. 相似文献

Most well–known laboratory methods which can be used in the diagnosis of fireblight, as well as more recent developments in identification, have been discussed. They vary from the use of simple culture media to the use of immunofluorescent microscopy. The use of any one method alone is not advised, but by combining methods, accurate and rapid diagnosis is possible. In order to minimize diagnostic errors, especially among less experienced workers, the use of 5 % sucrose–nutrient agar for bacterial isolation followed by serological control is recommended. Three separate trials of bovine embryo transfers were performed consisting of 32, 41 and 33 transfers, respectively, to examine the effects of (a) the developmental stage of in vitro‐derived blastocysts, (b) the amount of interferon‐τ (IFN‐τ) they secreted during culture and (c) the cyclic stage of the recipient at the time of transfer on the probability of establishment of pregnancy. One blastocyst was transferred into the ipsilateral uterine horn to the CL. At the time of transfer, blastocysts were classified into one of three developmental stages (early blastocyst, blastocyst and expanded blastocyst) and the cyclic stage of each cow was assessed (?12 h, on time, +12 h, +24 h, >24 h). Prior to the second and third trials, blastocysts were individually cultured for 24 h in 50 μl medium droplets and the IFN‐τ concentration in the droplet was determined. Logistic regression analyses revealed that expanded blastocysts had a significantly higher likelihood of establishing pregnancy (p = 0.009), and that there was a significant interaction with the cyclic stage of the recipient in this group with lower rates of pregnancy resulting from decreasing synchrony with the recipient (p = 0.033). IFN‐τ secretion during culture was significantly higher in expanded blastocysts than in the other two groups (p < 0.05). A significant effect of the pre‐transfer level of IFN‐τ secretion was found only in the ‘Blastocyst’ group where transfer of embryos with lower IFN‐τ production prior to transfer resulted in higher pregnancy rates (p = 0.047). These results demonstrate that IFN‐τ secretion may be a useful tool to predict pregnancy outcome, but only within certain developmental stages. 相似文献

Release of aluminium in Northwest-German Acid Brown soils on loess-sandstone solifluction deposits In soil and clay from root zones (50 resp. 80cm) of acid brown soils, the Si and Al released during weathering was determined by fractionated extraction with 0.5 N NaOH in order to arrive at a quantitative approximation of the possible clay and silicate destruction. Extracted Al was 4-10 times higher than Si, and showed a steep gradient between Ah- and B-horizon. The Al(clay)/Al(soil) ratio varied between 0.5 to 1 depending on the admixture of sandstone material to the loess. Assuming that the clay-extracted Al was derived from the destruction of clay, we arrived at a minimum value for affected clay of 1-4,5% of the soil mass or 10 to 40% of the present clay substance. Clay destruction is discussed as Al-release leaving behind a non-crystalline Si-O-OH lattice. 相似文献
