Between March and July 1987, a study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of and factors associated with toxigenic type D Pasteurella multocida infection in New South Wales pig herds. Toxigenic type D P. multocida was isolated from the nasal cavities of pigs in one (2%) of 50 randomly selected herds. Toxigenic isolates were also recovered from 2 (8%) of a separate group of 25 herds that had purchased pigs from a known infected piggery in South Australia (herd SA). Snout abnormalities were present in 9.4%, 3.2% and 1.8% of grower pigs in the 3 affected herds. Isolation of toxigenic P. multocida was significantly associated (p less than 0.0001) with the occurrence of clinically affected pigs in the herd. Purchase of at least 5 pigs from herd SA was associated with an elevated risk (p less than 0.05) of isolation of toxigenic P. multocida.  相似文献

Thermography has been shown to be a practical aid in the clinical evaluation of lameness. This modality specifically increases the accuracy of diagnosis. Thermography represents skin temperature, usually pictorially. The techniques involve contacting and noncontacting modalities. Noncontacting thermography, which detects infrared radiation, is the most accurate. In order to be accurate, thermography must be performed in a temperature-controlled, draft-free area. The area should be protected from sunlight to avoid erroneous heating of the skin, and the hair length should be uniform. Thermography detects heat before it is perceptible during routine physical examination; therefore, it is useful for early detection of laminitis, stress fractures, and tendinitis. It offers a noninvasive means of evaluating the blood supply to an injured part and offers one of the only reliable means to evaluate blood flow to the foot of horses with navicular syndrome. Thermography also is useful for the early identification of stress injuries to the contralateral limb of convalescing orthopedic patients. Thermography is an excellent adjunct to clinical and radiographic examination. It is complementary to other imaging techniques such as ultrasonography and scintigraphy.  相似文献

Rice (Oryza sativa L., var. Labelle) was grown in 300 m2 paddies of Beaumont clay soil (Typic pelludert) and subjected to two management schemes of flooded rice culture. These schemes were continuous irrigation and intermittent irrigation. Careful measurements of irrigation, precipitation, evapotranspiration, deep percolation and runoff were made, and the total water balance for the two water management schemes was calculated.The results show continuous irrigation to be very wasteful of water with slightly over 1 m of irrigation water applied to supply an evapotranspirational need of 0.5–0.6 m. The intermittent irrigation management is less wasteful but still could be improved upon. Suggestions are presented for techniques to help improve the water use efficiency and reduce runoff losses.  相似文献

A study was conducted to determine the effect of the milk-ejection reflex on exogenous gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH)-induced release of luteinizing hormone (LH) after short-term calf removal. Twenty-four postpartum multiparous beef cows were assigned randomly to groups arranged in a 2(3) factorial arrangement. Factors consisted of two levels of suckling [suckled (S) or nonsuckled (NS)], treatment with GnRH [saline (C) or 200 micrograms GnRH] and days postpartum (d 1 and 14). Dams were isolated from their calves for 4 h on d 1 and 14 postpartum. At the end of 4 h dams were reunited with their calves in S + C and S + GnRH groups, while dams of calves in NS + C and NS + GnRH groups remained separated an additional 2 h. Cows were injected iv with saline or GnRH following the 4-h isolation period, 5 min after calves had begun suckling or nuzzling the udder. Sera from jugular blood samples collected 15 min prior to the end of the 4-h isolation period, immediately prior to injection (0 h) and at 15 min intervals thereafter for 120 min were analyzed for LH. Serum concentrations of LH in control cows did not differ due to suckling or stage of the postpartum period and averaged 2.3 +/- .1 ng/ml. Pituitary response to GnRH was determined by computing the rate of LH release. Rate of LH release (ng LH.ml-1.min-1) in response to GnRH on d 14 was greater (P less than .001) than on d 1 in both suckled and nonsuckled groups (S + GnRH, 37.1 +/- 3.9 vs 18.3 +/- 5.0; NS + GnRH, 34.7 +/- 5.9 vs 14.5 +/- 1.1). However, GnRH-induced release of LH did not differ between suckled and nonsuckled cows on either d 1 or 14 postpartum. These data indicate that response of the bovine pituitary to GnRH during the postpartum period is not influenced by the act of suckling but is enhanced with time after parturition.  相似文献

A semi-automatic unit for handling pigs through a weigher is described. Two crates are used in series, the first being a handling crate where identification is done before the pigs are loaded one at a time into the weigh crate. The latter has pneumatically operated gates and a floor which senses the presence of a pig. Using electronic weight averaging, the unit enables one man to weigh about 100 pigs/h without assistance. With a second man, throughputs of about 200 pigs/h are possible. Similar principles are applied to sheep and cattle weighing. Possible future developments are discussed.  相似文献
