The variation of the water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) concentration in foliage and stubble and winter hardiness among cocksfoot
(Dactylis glomerata L.) ecotypes originated from diverse countries were studied in the field in order to find a breeding material for the improvement
of WSC. The total WSC concentration of foliage was found to be highest in Japanese cultivars and lowest in ecotypes from northern
Europe in summer and autumn. The variation of fructan concentration in stubble among ecotypes was larger than the variation
of mono and disaccharide concentrations in stubble and that of total WSC concentration in foliage in both winters over which
this study was conducted. The total WSC and fructan concentrations in the stubble of ecotypes from Spain and southern Europe,
derived from the Mediterranean region, were highest in summer. Ecotypes from Japan showed the highest concentration of total
WSC in stubble, and were especially high in fructan concentration in autumn. Ecotypes from France, central Europe and central
Asia, like Japanese cultivars, also showed a high fructan concentration. The latitude of origin was negatively correlated
with WSC concentration and plant vigor in autumn. The altitude of origin was negatively correlated with plant vigor in autumn
and positively correlated with fructan concentration in stubble, winter hardiness and snow endurance. Typhula snow blight
resistance was related with the amount of the increase in fructan in the plants and with their growth habits in autumn. The
fructan concentration of foliage and stubble in autumn was found to be closely related with winter hardiness in cocksfoot
ecotypes. A breeding material which has a high WSC concentration in the foliage could not be found among the ecotypes in this
study. However, some ecotypes that showed disease resistance, good winter hardiness and plant vigor would be useful as breeding

Barley lipoxygenase (LOX)‐1 is believed to affect the stability of flavour and the foam of beer. The purpose of this study was to investigate the genetic variation of the LOX‐1 thermostability, and to analyse the mode of inheritance of this trait. A simple method was established to evaluate the LOX‐1 relative thermostability (LOX‐RTS). With this method, 153 barley cultivars were screened for LOX‐RTS. The frequency of the LOX‐RTS values was distributed in a bimodal manner. Based on these values, the barley lines were categorized into two groups: an H‐type with relatively thermostable LOX‐1 and an L‐type with relatively thermolabile LOX‐1. Using a ‘Steptoe’/‘Morex’ doubled haploid population, a major quantitative trait locus (QTL) associated with LOX‐RTS was identified on chromosome 4H of barley, explaining 82% of the variance. Mapping of a CAPS marker specific for the LoxA locus revealed co‐segregation with this QTL. In this study, the existence of the thermostability types of barley seed LOX‐1 and the locus controlling the thermostability were made clearer. 相似文献

We investigated the relationships of three allelic variations in Glu-B3 (ab, g, and h) with dough properties and bread-making quality-related characteristics using near-isogenic lines (NILs) of ‘Yumechikara’ that commonly carry Glu-A1a, Glu-B1b, Glu-D1d, Glu-A3f, Glu-B3ab and Glu-D3a. Measurement of peak time (PT) in a 2-g mixograph indicated that Glu-B3g was the most effective for a strong dough property, followed by Glu-B3ab, with Glu-B3h being the least effective. The results of measurement of mixing time during bread-making were similar to those for PTs, i.e., the lines carrying Glu-B3g showed the longest mixing time, followed by those of Glu-B3ab, and those of Glu-B3h showed the shortest mixing time. Since two parameters of bread-making quality, loaf volume (LV) and specific loaf volume (SLV), were affected by flour protein contents in all groups of the Glu-B3 genotype, we compared the effects of the three Glu-B3 alleles on those parameters using analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) to remove the effect of protein content. The results indicated that the Glu-B3h group showed the largest SLV, followed by the Glu-B3ab group, and the Glu-B3g group showed the smallest SLV. These results suggest that the introduction of Glu-B3h into ‘Yumechikara’ makes it possible to breed varieties with good bread-making quality-related characteristics. 相似文献

The promyelocytic leukemia (PML) tumor suppressor is a pleiotropic modulator of apoptosis. However, the molecular basis for such a diverse proapoptotic role is currently unknown. We show that extranuclear Pml was specifically enriched at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and at the mitochondria-associated membranes, signaling domains involved in ER-to-mitochondria calcium ion (Ca(2+)) transport and in induction of apoptosis. We found Pml in complexes of large molecular size with the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP(3)R), protein kinase Akt, and protein phosphatase 2a (PP2a). Pml was essential for Akt- and PP2a-dependent modulation of IP(3)R phosphorylation and in turn for IP(3)R-mediated Ca(2+) release from ER. Our findings provide a mechanistic explanation for the pleiotropic role of Pml in apoptosis and identify a pharmacological target for the modulation of Ca(2+) signals. 相似文献

Flood mitigation in irrigation tanks and paddy fields is their favorable aspect though its practical effect is not known very
well. A dynamic and systematic approach is presented to assess flood mitigation in a tank irrigated paddy fields area in the
worst case where no static buffer function is expected. Based on the linear control theory, transfer function models for runoff
process in catchments are identified. Hydraulic models are developed to represent flood dynamics in irrigation tanks, paddy
fields, and drainage channels. These models are integrated as an ordinary differential equations system. Then, using the perturbed
linear system, flood mitigation in each component of the system is examined in terms of frequency response. An application
example demonstrates that a tank irrigated paddy fields area has a significant flood mitigation effect as a low-pass filter.
This method has the advantage of assessing flood mitigation even in the case of an increase in the total runoff ratio. 相似文献

A distributed hydro-environmental model is developed that achieves detailed analysis of the movement of water at a field-plot-scale
resolution in a mesoscale watershed including lowland areas where, especially for agricultures, it is an essential need to
get rid of redundant groundwater by drainage facilities such as rivers, canals and/or underdrains. For this, the problem geometry
is meshed with unstructured cells of triangular shape. Profile of a column cell is zoned into two: surface zone and groundwater
zone in which water movement is represented by combined tank and soil moisture sub-models, and well-defined two-dimensional
unconfined shallow groundwater flow sub-model, respectively. The top-two sub-models serve to evaluate evapotranspiration,
infiltration, soil water content, lateral surface water flow, and vertical percolation. The vertical percolation so evaluated
is given as longitudinal recharge to the bottom sub-model for computing groundwater flow. Surface water–groundwater interactions
through beds and stream-banks of perennial and ephemeral canals are considered by treating the canal courses as internal boundaries
in the groundwater flow model. The finite volume method (FVM) that allows of unstructured mesh and produces conservative solutions
is employed for groundwater flow computation. The model developed is applied to an actual watershed which includes a low-lying
paddy area to quantify the hydrological impact of land-use management practices over a period of 29 years in which the farmland
consolidation project was implemented and part of the paddy fields were converted to upland crop fields and housing lands.
From the results obtained, it is concluded that the model presently developed lends itself to water—as well as land-use management

Interactions of Salinity Stress and Flower Thinning on Tomato Growth,Yield, and Water Use Efficiency

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of salinity stress and flower number on growth, yield, water use efficiency (WUE), and fruit quality of cherry tomatoes cultivated under soilless conditions. The experiment was conducted in a plastic house (5-m wide × 11-m long) located in Gifu University. The seedlings were transplanted in a randomized complete block design with six plants per treatment (NT1 and ST1 were with four plants), giving a total of 44 plants in 22 pots (two plants per pot). Two different salinity levels [no-salinity and salinity with electrical conductivity: 0.8 and 3.0 dS m?1, respectively] and four flower number treatments (8, 13, 18, and free per truss) were investigated in the experiment. The results showed that salinity stress negatively affected tomato growth, yield, and marketable yield, but improved tomato fruit quality. The number of flowers had no effect on tomato growth variables and WUE, but the yield significantly increased with increasing flower number. However, the fruit quality was decreased with increased flower number. A reasonable control for fruit load can increase marketable yield in commercial cultivation. Under salinity stress conditions, properly increasing the number of flowers can avoid yield reduction. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Morphometrical analyses were performed on Buccinum tsubai , a deep-sea gastropod found in the Sea of Japan, and morphological differences were examined between the gender and among the four local subpopulations of Hokkaido, Yamagata-Toyama, the Yamato Bank, and San'in which are distinguished by mitochondrial DNA sequence analysis. As a result, sexual dimorphism of B. tsubai was found. Morphological differences were also recognized among four areas which may be related to genetic differences. They are also thought to be associated with the phenotypic plasticity in response to different environmental factors in each area. B. tsubai inhabits the the upper portion of the Sea of Japan Proper Water (UJSPW); and in the UJSPW of the Yamato Basin, nutrients are comparatively abundant and the dissolved oxygen content is low. Early life survival is critical to successful replenishment of fish populations, and hypotheses developed under the Growth-Survival Paradigm (GSP) have guided investigations of controlling processes. The GSP postulates that recruitment depends on growth and mortality rates during early life stages, as well as their duration, after which the mortality declines substantially. The GSP predicts a shift in the frequency distribution of growth histories with age towards faster growth rates relative to the initial population because slow-growing individuals are subject to high mortality (via starvation and predation). However, mortality data compiled from 387 cases published in 153 studies (1971–2022) showed that the GSP was only supported in 56% of cases. Selection against slow growth occurred in two-thirds of field studies, leaving a non-negligible fraction of cases showing either an absence of or inverse growth-selective survival, suggesting the growth-survival relationship is more complex than currently considered within the GSP framework. Stochastic simulations allowed us to assess the influence of key intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the characteristics of surviving larvae and identify knowledge gaps on the drivers of variability in growth-selective survival. We suggest caution when interpreting patterns of growth selection because changes in variance and autocorrelation of individual growth rates among cohorts can invalidate fundamental GSP assumptions. We argue that breakthroughs in recruitment research require a comprehensive, population-specific characterization of the role of predation and intrinsic factors in driving variability in the distribution and autocorrelation of larval growth rates, and of the life stage corresponding to the endpoint of pre-recruited life. 相似文献
