Agronomic and environmental testing laboratories in Texas and elsewhere have adopted Mehlich III (M3) as their official soil test phosphorus (P) methodology. However, M3-P data could be skewed due to non-homogenous soil samples or failure to follow standard protocol which could influence recommendations or restrictions. Twelve agricultural soils with a wide range of properties were collected from across Texas. Exhaustive efforts via multiple methods were made to prepare homogeneous representative soil samples. The standard M3 protocol selected was a 2 g weighed soil sample placed in a 148 ml disposable plastic cup, using a 1:10 soil:M3 solution ratio, shaken on a 200 rpm orbital shaker with a 2.5 cm throw for exactly 5 min, and filtered through Whatman No. 2 filter paper. The standard protocol was compared with nine different protocol variations with variables including soil weighing versus scooping, scooping repeatability of different technicians, soil sample weight, shaking type, speed and time, different filter papers, and varying soil:extractant ratios. Extent of soil pulverization on M3-P results was also evaluated. Tests were performed in four replications for all protocols to assess effects on M3-extractable soil P. Percent recovery of soil during grinding had no effect on M3-extractable P. Little difference in M3-extractable P was observed between scooping and weighing of 2 g soil samples. Shaker type had no effect on extractable P in soils with low clay contents, however, increasing shaking speed and using an orbital shaker resulted in higher extractable P, especially in clayey soils. Both Whatman No. 1 and 2 filter papers were found suitable for M3-P analyses. Different soil:extractant ratios resulted in a highly significant influence on the amount of M3-P extracted. However, when ratios were maintained between 1:9 and 1:11, few differences in extractable P were observed. Using sample weights below 3 g did not significantly alter precision or accuracy of results. However, technician variation in scooping of 2 or 5 g soil samples resulted in significant differences in M3-P.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate response of dryland corn (Zea mays L.) along the upper Texas Gulf Coast to residual soil nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N) measured to depths of 15, 30, and 61 cm. Residual soil NO3-N levels ranged from 3.4 to 31.6, 7.8 to 49.3, and 9.0 to 71.7 kg ha?1, respectively, in 0 to 15, 15 to 30, and 30 to 61 cm depth increments, with cumulative NO3-N ranging from 23.5 to 114.5 kg ha?1 across sites-years. Where N fertilizer was reduced due to N crediting, yields and bushel weights at all 13 site-years showed no difference from those receiving full recommended N rates. A yield response to any level of added fertilizer N above the control was observed for only 6 of 13 site-years. These results indicate a high potential for success in crediting carryover soil NO3-N to 61 cm as a means of reducing applied nitrogen fertilizer rates.  相似文献

Surimi was prepared by washing with single washing cycle with cold water (T-1), alkaline saline (0.2% NaHCO3 and 0.15% NaCl; T-2) solution, and with calcium chloride and salt (0.2% CaCl2 and 0.1% NaCl; T-3), respectively, and compared with conventional washed (CW) surimi. T-2 exhibited significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased moisture content, which correlated with increased yield, pH and also significantly decreased lipid and ash content. A significant (p ≤ 0.05) decrease in expressible moisture content was also observed in T-2, which suggested higher water holding capacity compared to other treatments. Heat-induced surimi gels exhibited highest L* (p ≤ 0.05), followed by surimi in all the treatments. In the case of L*, T-1 showed highest lightness, followed by T-2, which was comparable to CW. The lowest myoglobin content was exhibited by CW surimi (p ≤ 0.05), which is due to repeated washings. T-2 gel showed higher elasticity, texture, and overall acceptability than others (p ≤ 0.05), except for the whiteness. In all the aspects, T-2 was comparable with CW. Washing with one cycle of T-2 solution can not only improve the quality of surimi but can reduce the wastage of water that is released into the environment without further treatment.  相似文献

The potential of near-infrared transflectance spectroscopy (1100-2498 nm) combined with chemometric techniques to confirm the geographical origin of European olive oil samples was evaluated. In total, 913 extra virgin olive oil samples (210 Ligurian and 703 non-Ligurian) were collected over three consecutive harvests (2005, 2006, and 2007). A multivariate spectral fingerprint for Ligurian olive oil was developed and deployed to confirm or refute a claim that any given sample was Ligurian. Samples were pseudorandomly split into calibration (n = 280) and validation sets (n = 633); the only selection constraint applied was to insist on equal numbers of Ligurian and non-Ligurian samples in the calibration set. Following preliminary examination by principal component analysis, the full spectrum modeling method applied to the spectral data set was discriminant partial least-squares regression; various data pretreatments were also investigated. The best models correctly predicted the origins of samples in the prediction set up to 92.8 and 81.5% for Ligurian and non-Ligurian olive oil samples, respectively, using a first-derivative data pretreatment. The potential of this approach in commercial traceability and quality assurance schemes is noted.  相似文献

After a brief overview of the general production, market value, and uses of citrus by-products, this literature review will focus on the most highly refined “pharmaceutical grade” citrus oils and antioxidants that have been derived from peels or other fruit parts. Citrus oils have been used as a part of the perfume industry and in the practice of alternative medicine for a long time, but now there is a great deal of mainstream food processing and drug industry interest in them owing to the rediscovery or confirmation of some of their beneficial properties, as well their development for entirely new applications. Their roles as antimicrobial, immunomodulatory, and cancer chemopreventive or chemotherapeutic agents appear promising.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables contributes to improved health and well-being by providing protection from diseases including various cancers and cardiovascular disease. Although there is uncertainty about which components generate this effect, an attractive hypothesis is that the antioxidants are at least partly responsible. We measured the polyphenolic concentrations in 10 different apple cultivars grown commercially in New Zealand, each sourced from three different geographic regions. Our results showed that the concentration of polyphenolics varied among the apple cultivars, with Pacific Queen containing 2.7 times the amount of polyphenolics found in Cox's Orange. Furthermore, there were significant differences in polyphenolic concentrations in fruit from different regions for some cultivars but not for others. We also measured the polyphenolic concentrations in apple skin and flesh and found that on average 46% of the polyphenolics in whole apples were in the skin. Essentially all of the flavonols (quercetin derivatives) were present in the skin. To maximize the intake of apple polyphenols, it is necessary to consume apples of cultivars with high polyphenolic concentrations such as Pacific Queen and include the skin. Our results also showed that there is potential for promoting apple fruit from specific geographical regions because they contained elevated concentrations of antioxidant polyphenolic compounds.  相似文献

Mycoplasma bovis is perceived as an emerging cause of mortality in feedlot beef cattle. This study examined the lesions and infectious agents in naturally occurring M. bovis-associated bronchopneumonia and arthritis and the relationship of this condition with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection. Standardized pathologic, immunohistochemical, and microbiologic investigations were conducted on 99 calves that died or were euthanized within 60 days after arrival in 72 feedlots. Cranioventral bronchopneumonia with multiple foci of caseous necrosis was identified in 54 of 99 calves, including 30 with concurrent fibrinosuppurative bronchopneumonia typical of pneumonic pasteurellosis. Mycoplasma bovis was consistently identified in these lesions by culture and immunohistochemistry, but also commonly in healthy lungs and those with pneumonia of other causes. Focal lesions of coagulation necrosis, typical of pneumonic pasteurellosis, were often infected with both Mannheimia haemolytica and M. bovis. Arthritis was present in 25 of 54 (46%) calves with M. bovis pneumonia, and all calves with arthritis had pneumonia. BVDV infection was more common in calves with lesions of bacterial pneumonia than in those dying of other causes, but BVDV infection was not more common in calves with caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia than those with fibrinosuppurative bronchopneumonia. Retrospective analysis identified cases of M. bovis pneumonia in the early 1980s that had milder lesions than the current cases. The findings suggest that, in at least some calves, M. bovis induces caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia within the lesions of pneumonic pasteurellosis.  相似文献
