Maternal effects have been observed to interact with genotypic and environmental influences to structure offspring phenotypes across a wide variety of taxa. In fishes, maternal effects may be especially important due to their potential influence on development and survival during early ontogeny – a period with high potential for population regulation. While previous studies have confirmed that maternal effects on offspring phenotype are common in fishes, the consistency with which they positively affect offspring fitness throughout early ontogeny remains largely unknown. We examined maternal effects on offspring fitness by quantifying relationships between maternal (length, mass and age), egg (diameter, mass and density) and larval traits (length, yolk‐sac volume and survival) in yellow perch (Perca flavescens). Consistent with several past studies, positive relationships among maternal and egg traits were evident. While egg mass was positively related to larval size at hatching, direct relationships between maternal and larval metrics were not apparent. Larval survival appeared to have two critical periods; in contrast with expectations, survival in the first 5 days posthatch was strongly negatively related to female size and age, while survival over the following 9 days was unrelated to maternal traits. Throughout the study, survival was positively related to yolk‐sac volume. Our unexpected observation of a negative relationship between maternal size and age and initial larval survival indicates that maternal effects may not be consistent throughout larval ontogeny. In fact, maternal effects appear to be dynamic influences on offspring fitness, and may have complex effects on individual‐ and population‐level reproductive success.  相似文献

Hepcidin is a peptide hormone secreted by the liver in response to iron loading and inflammation. Decreased hepcidin leads to tissue iron overload, whereas hepcidin overproduction leads to hypoferremia and the anemia of inflammation. Ferroportin is an iron exporter present on the surface of absorptive enterocytes, macrophages, hepatocytes, and placental cells. Here we report that hepcidin bound to ferroportin in tissue culture cells. After binding, ferroportin was internalized and degraded, leading to decreased export of cellular iron. The posttranslational regulation of ferroportin by hepcidin may thus complete a homeostatic loop: Iron regulates the secretion of hepcidin, which in turn controls the concentration of ferroportin on the cell surface.  相似文献

The red yeast Phaffia rhodozyma has possible application as a component of diets for use in aquaculture. Its primary value lies in its content of astaxanthin, which is much higher (5–50 times) than that found in crustacean meals. When fed to rainbow trout, the deposition of astaxanthin in the fish flesh was dependent on the proper preparation of yeast cells before their inclusion into the feed. No astaxanthin was nutritionally available from intact yeast. If P. rhodozyma was mechanically ruptured its pigments were transferred to the flesh of rainbow trout, coloring it salmon-pink. The most efficient deposition of astaxanthin in trout occurred when the cell wall of P. rhodozyma was partially removed by enzymatic digestion.The proxiamte composition, amino acid content, fatty acid profile, and astaxanthin content were determined for P. rhodozyma. When grown under the conditions used in this study, P. rhodozyma has a low protein content (~25%) and a high total lipid content (~17%) compared with most other microorganisms. Its amino acid profile is well balanced but is deficient in methionine. The predominant fatty acids present in the yeast are oleic, linoleic and palmitic acids.  相似文献

This study investigated the possibility of using a finishing feeding strategy and to apply a dilution model for the calculation of the content of fatty acids (FA) in farmed brook char (Salvelinus fontinalis). Four duplicate groups of fish with an initial weight 153.3 ± 4.9 g?1 were kept in a flow-through system for 135 days, during which they more than triplicated their weight. Control groups were fed the same unmodified commercial diet with 100 % fish oil (FO) or with 60 % fish oil and 40 % rapeseed oil (RO) mixture. Two groups were fed by RO diet followed by 45 (RO:45FO) and 90 (RO:90FO) days of FO diet, respectively, at the end of the growing period. The fillet FA composition at the end of the experiment corresponded with the FA composition of the lipid source in the diet for the tested groups. A significant (p < 0.05) impact on FA composition with a decreasing tendency in the representation of n-3 HUFA with a prolonged feeding period with the RO diet was observed. The application of a dilution model enabling the prediction of the content of a given fatty acid in a given time was successfully performed.  相似文献

We reviewed recent in vivo studies of the real-time changes in the vasculature of the follicle wall during selection of the dominant follicle as well as during ovulation in cows. Changes in follicle diameter and vascularity were determined by transrectal ultrasonography. Blood flow within the walls of the two largest follicles was detected at the time of wave emergence (largest follicle=5 mm in diameter). Before selection of a follicle (largest follicle <8.5 mm in diameter), the degrees of vascularity of the two largest follicles were not significantly different. After the largest follicle reached a diameter of 10 mm, the vascularity of the largest (dominant) follicle was higher than that of the second largest (subordinate) follicle. In the preovulatory follicle, follicular vascularity gradually increased, and as ovulation approached, the LH-surge induced an increase in blood flow within the follicle wall. The above results suggest that maintenance of follicular vasculature and appropriate blood supplies to follicles are essential for establishment of follicular dominance. Consequently, only a dominant follicle with high vascularity may have a chance to reach final maturation and acquire ovulatory capacity.  相似文献

Elimination of egg stickiness is an important factor in artificial reproduction of pikeperch (Sander lucioperca L.). This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of Alcalase enzyme to remove the adhesive layer of pikeperch eggs. The eggs were treated with Alcalase at 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0 mL L?1 or a milk/talc solution 2 min post insemination. Duration of exposure was 2 min in Alcalase and 60 min in milk/talc. The highest, albeit not significant, hatching rate (85.4%) was found with 1.5 mL L?1 of Alcalase, but hatching rates were similar in 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 mL L?1. Hatching rates were significantly lower groups treated with 5.0 mL L?1 Alcalase enzyme (56.4%) compared to groups treated with milk powder and talc (61.3%). Nominally complete removal of adhesiveness was observed in 1.5 and 2 mL L?1. All Alcalase treatments led to significantly lower incubation duration compared with the traditional milk/talc treatment. The application of Alcalase successfully eliminated pikeperch egg stickiness in less time than with traditional milk/clay/talc methods.  相似文献

Ecological complexity may improve ecosystem function, stability and adaptability to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Intraspecific trophic variation can represent a significant component of total community variation and can influence food web structure and function. Thus, understanding how trophic niches are partitioned between intraspecific and interspecific processes could improve our understanding of food web dynamics. We examined gut contents, fatty acids and stable isotope ratios in round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and yellow perch (Perca flavescens) across six sites in Lake Michigan, USA, to determine patterns in intra‐ and interspecific trophic composition (i.e., mean gut or fatty acid composition) and diversity (i.e., the diversity of gut items or fatty acids). We also examined relationships between fatty acid diversity and gut content characteristics to understand potential mechanisms shaping individual trophic phenotypes. There was significant variation in both trophic composition and diversity among sites, and individual and spatial variation was as important to total trophic variation as species identity. Round goby that consumed dreissenid mussels had more diverse fatty acid profiles than those that consumed other benthic invertebrates, whereas yellow perch fatty acid diversity was not related to gut content composition. Our results confirm that intraspecific variation in resource use can be as important to trophic dynamics as interspecific variation, and that spatial variation in lower level food web processes or habitat may strongly structure local food web dynamics. Individual‐level examination of trophic diversity, in concert with trophic composition, could provide additional information about the resilience, function and adaptability of local food webs.  相似文献

Pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris) was impregnated with linseed oil to three levels of uptake. The distribution of the penetrant was found by taking microdensity measurements of an impregnated sample and then using an ethanol extraction procedure to remove the linseed oil. A second set of X-ray measurements at identical locations in the same sample allowed the linseed oil to be indirectly mapped. An uneven distribution of linseed oil in the specimens with the lowest uptake (25% increase in weight) was seen as sharp gradients in the densitometry curves. With increased filling by the linseed oil, these gradients were gradually smoothed. Microstructural changes in specimens with high uptake were revealed using scanning electron microscopy. Through a combination of X-ray microdensitometry investigation and changes observed in the wood's mechanical properties and morphology, it was concluded that liquid flow during impregnation results in significant damage to the cell structure.  相似文献

The interest in producing ethanol from maize has increased during recent years. However, the potential for maize-ethanol production is restricted to the extent of the feedstock production and the feedstock collection radius around an ethanol processing plant. The harvested acreage of maize in Alabama, Florida and Georgia has varied from 115,000 ha to 1.4 million ha during the last 50 years. One basic criterion for a sustainable production of renewable bio-ethanol is a positive net energy yield (NEY), i.e. more energy must be produced than the non-renewable energy that is used in the energy production chain, including the feedstock production and transportation and the biofuel processing. The goal of this study was to evaluate the potential to produce renewable energy the form of maize-ethanol in a region with typical southeastern USA maize cropping conditions. Two maize production acreages, which represent current and historical large acreages, and two feedstock collection radii of 100 and 200 km around an ethanol plant in southwest Georgia were evaluated. Maize growth and yield were simulated with the Cropping System Model (CSM)-CERES-Maize model to account for climate and soil variability. The simulations included weather data for 68 years. The potential ethanol production and NEY were calculated based on the simulated yields and energy requirements for the production. The ethanol production potential was 30–40 times greater for the large production acreage than for the small acreage. The average NEY across all simulated years was positive for all evaluated production acreages and collection radii. However, it was negative for the large production acreage under certain weather conditions. This study showed the potential to provide for an increase in renewable ethanol production from maize in the southeastern USA to meet the demand of the ethanol processing infrastructure.  相似文献

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is one of the most important legume crops for human consumption. However, its grain yield can be reduced by up to 90% by the seedborne disease, anthracnose. Fungicide treatment is costly and time‐consuming. The introduction of host plant resistance against this disease appears, therefore, to be crucial for enhancing the productivity of this crop in Kyrgyzstan. The use of DNA‐based markers in backcrossing programmes may help speed up the breeding for resistance. In this study, we used a combination of inoculation tests and a DNA marker (SCAreoli marker) to track the transfer of host‐plant resistance (Co‐2 gene) from two donor cultivars, ‘Vaillant’ and ‘Flagrano’, to susceptible Kyrgyz cultivars ‘Ryabaya’, ‘Kytayanka’ and ‘Lopatka’, which are widely grown in the country. The segregating offspring were evaluated to test the reliability of the SCAreoli marker as selection aid for host‐plant resistance to anthracnose. Our study showed that a co‐dominant DNA marker can successfully be used in backcross breeding to distinguish segregating material in different market classes of common bean.  相似文献
