A 1.5-year-old castrated, male, mixed-breed dog was evaluated because of a 2-week history of lethargy, stiffness, and progressive paraparesis. Spinal radiographs, myelography, and computed tomography of the region showed a locally invasive mass involving the thoracic wall. Upon necropsy, an encapsulated, fluctuant mass was noted attached to the right dorsal body wall in the region of the fifth to seventh thoracic vertebra. Churukian-Schenk staining revealed positive granules within the neoplastic cell cytoplasm and immunohistochemistry was positive for expression for cytoplasmic neuron-specific enolase and synaptophysin. Chromogranin A and S100 expression were found to be negative. Immunohistochemistry and silver staining did not allow further differentiation of the tumor, and the diagnosis remains consistent with either a chromaffin paraganglioma or a nonchromaffin paraganglioma (chemodectoma) with some production of catecholamines. Extra-adrenal paragangliomas are rare neoplasms in dogs but should be considered as a possible differential diagnosis for a primary paraspinal thoracic mass. 相似文献

A pair of Australian black swans (Cygnus atratus) with origins in Wakefield, Virginia, USA, was admitted to the quarantine area at the Baltimore Zoo for general health assessments before housing in the collections. During the quarantine period, no clinical signs of disease were manifest; however, upon examination of a blood smear, intraerythrocytic parasites were detected and initially determined to be Haemoproteus species. Diagnostic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing results, however, indicated that the parasites were within the genus Plasmodium. Subclinical infections with Plasmodium species in birds may affect collection management, and transmission from refractory hosts to susceptible hosts should be considered when multispecies exhibits are used. In addition, changes in the dynamics of host-vector-parasite interactions might have significant impacts on wild or domesticated populations of birds. 相似文献

A 13-yr-old Amur tiger (Panthera tigris altaica) was presented for an acute onset of paraplegia. Spinal imaging that included plain radiographs, myelography, and computed tomography performed under general anesthesia revealed lateralized spinal cord compression at the intervertebral disc space L4-5 caused by intervertebral disc extrusion. This extrusion was accompanied by an extensive epidural hemorrhage from L3 to L6. Therefore, a continuous hemilaminectomy from L3 to L6 was performed, resulting in complete decompression of the spinal cord. The tiger was ambulatory again 10 days after the surgery. This case suggests that the potential benefit of complete spinal cord decompression may outweigh the risk of causing clinically significant spinal instability after extensive decompression. 相似文献

A die-off occurred in a captive colony of blue-winged grasshoppers (Tropidacris collaris) at the Toronto Zoo. One fourth of the colony died within a year due to infection with worms initially mistaken for nematomorphs but later identified as nematodes belonging to the Mermithidae, genus Mermis. Mortality persisted and the grasshopper population dwindled over the following years. Mermithid larvae developed in the hemocoel of the insects until they eventually emerged from a hollowed-out exoskeleton. Circumstantial evidence suggests that the parasites were introduced with raspberry browse that was grown on site and contaminated with mermithid eggs. 相似文献

Dead wood patterns and dynamics vary with biophysical factors, disturbance history, ownership, and management practices; the
relative importance of these factors is poorly understood, especially at landscape to regional scales. This study examined
current dead wood amounts in the Coastal Province of Oregon, USA, at multiple spatial scales. Objectives were to: (1) describe
current regional amounts of several characteristics of dead wood; (2) compare dead wood amounts across ownerships; (3) determine
the relative importance, according to spatial scale, of biophysical and ownership characteristics, to regional dead wood abundance.
Dead wood plot data were evaluated with respect to explanatory variables at four spatial scales of resolution: plots, subwatersheds,
watersheds and subbasins. The relationships of dead wood characteristics with biophysical attributes and ownership were diverse
and scale-specific. Region-wide dead wood abundance and types varied among ownerships, with public lands typically having
higher amounts of dead wood and more large dead wood than private lands. Regression analysis of total dead wood volume indicated
that ownership was important at the subbasin scale. Growing season moisture stress was important at plot, subwatershed, and
watershed scales. Topography was important at the two coarser scales. Multivariate analysis of dead wood gradients showed
that ownership was important at all scales, topography at the subbasin scale, historical vegetation at watershed and subbasin
scales, and current vegetation at plot and subwatershed scales. Management for dead wood and related biodiversity at watershed
to landscape scales should consider the distinct dynamics of snags and logs, the importance of historical effects, and the
