Summary TwoAtriplex spp. growing in low-fertility saline sodic soils were assayed for root-associated nitrogenase activity. The excised washed and unwashed root of the two species.A. lentiformis andA. amnicola, showed high root-associated nitrogenase activity. Acetylene-reducing activity seemed to be directly influenced by moisture. The highest number of diazotrophs, enumerated using a most probable number technique was observed on the root surface. Most of the isolated diazotrophs were identified asEnterobacter agglomerans. Root-associated nitrogenase activity inAtriplex spp. may explain the high protein and biomass content of these plants growing in low-fertility saline sodic soils.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Measles virus (MV) is a highly contagious agent which causes a major health problem in developing countries. We studied the effect of buthionine sulfoximine (BSO) on the replication of an AIK-HDC strain of MV and its induced apoptosis in Vero cell lines. METHODS: In this study, toxicity of BSO on Vero cells was investigated first, resulted in determination of sub-lethal or non-toxic concentration zone of BSO for cells. Next, anti-viral effect of BSO at various time limits was evaluated and virus titer was determined at each stage either as 50% tissue culture infective dose (TCID) 50 or by plaque assay method. Using specific anti-measles IgG, anti-viral effect of BSO on MV replication cycle was evaluated through indirect immunofluorescence assay, meanwhile presence of viral RNA was investigated by RT-PCR and gel electrophoresis. RESULTS: According to the experiments, BSO, at concentration of 50 microM, markedly inhibited the cytopathic effect (CPE) induced by MV. BSO also significantly inhibited apoptosis induced by MV. BSO either influences replication of MV genome, or may inhibit virion formation. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the inhibition of CPE and apoptosis by BSO induced by MV may be associated with the effect of BSO on viral RNA genome. Therefore, it is suggested that MV infections can induce apoptosis through the activation of a common pathway that can be inhibited by BSO.  相似文献

Bacteria containing ACC-deaminase in the vicinity of roots may influence plant growth by modifying root architecture through their potential to regulate ethylene synthesis in plant roots. Approximately 138 isolates capable of utilizing ACC as the sole source of N were isolated from the rhizosphere soil of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) plants. Under axenic conditions, some rhizobacterial isolates were highly effective in increasing root length (up to 2.08 fold), number (up to 3.7 fold) and length (up to 3.9 fold) of lateral roots, and root biomass (up to 83%) of chickpea as compared to uninoculated control. Serratia proteamaculans strain J119 was found to be the most effective plant growth promoting rhizobacterium (PGPR) in improving root and shoot growth, nodulation and grain yield of chickpea as compared to respective controls in growth pouches, pot and field trials. A highly significant direct correlation (r = 0.99) was observed between number of lateral roots under axenic conditions (jar trial) and number of nodules per plant in pot and field trials. Interestingly, S. proteamaculans J119 also exhibited highest ACC-deaminase activity in addition to root colonization compared to other tested strains. The results of this study demonstrated that changes in root growth and architecture (particularly lateral roots) as a result of inoculation with PGPR containing ACC-deaminase are crucial for improving growth, yield and nodulation of chickpea under field conditions.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to appraise the inhibitory effects of salt stress on biochemical attributes in the three mungbean cultivars (NCM-209, NCM-89 and NM-92). Salt stress caused a significant decrease in plant height, shoot relative water contents, photosynthetic pigments, endogenous levels of K+ and K+/Na+ ratios and increase in cellular levels of H2O2, MDA, Na+ and Cl?. However, cv. NCM-209 was found to be tolerant in terms of lower salt-induced decline in K+, K+/Na+ ratio and photosynthetic pigments. The endogenous levels of H2O2 and MDA were also lower in cv. NCM-209. Salt stress markedly also affected different yield attributes in all mungbean cultivars. Again cultivar NCM-209 exhibited less inhibitory effects of salt stress on different growth attributes. Salt stress resulted in a marked increase in the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase and ascorbate peroxidase) in mungbean cultivars. Activity of peroxidase was maximal in cv. NCM-209 and catalase activity was maximal in cv. NCM-89, whereas cvs. NCM-89 and NM-92 showed higher activities of superoxide dismutase. Similarly activity of ascorbate peroxidase was higher in cv. NM-92. It could be inferred from data of antioxidant enzymes that mungbean cultivars cannot be categorized as salt tolerant or sensitive on the basis of a single antioxidant enzyme.  相似文献

Abstract

Bruising in “Aroma”, “Cox's Orange Pippin” and “Ingrid Marie” apples grown in a Swedish research orchard were studied during two seasons—1992, 1993. Incidence was recorded by dropping fruits from 0, 5, 10, 15, 25 and 30 cm. Bruising increased with increasing drop heights, and dropping from higher than 10 cm caused more large bruise areas. The diameter of some bruise areas increased during storage for 2 months. Aroma was the more sensitive cultivar and Cox's Orange Pippin was the more resistive against bruising.

In order to compare bruise quantifying methods, we studied number, diameter, weight and volume of bruise. We found that the bruise weight parameter ((bruise weight/fruit weight) × 100) was the most accurate method owing to the correspondence between this parameter and impact energy.  相似文献

We studied the growth and ionic composition of five wheat genotypes (Inqlab-91, Uqab 2002, SARC-1, SARC-3, and SARC-5) grown under salinity stress to applied silicon. Plants were grown with three levels of salinity [0, 60, and 120 mM sodium chloride (NaCl)] in the presence of 0, 2, and 4 mM Si in nutrient solution for 40 days. Salinity stress significantly decreased shoot and root biomass in plants with varying degrees. Genotype SARC-3 exhibited higher salt tolerance than other genotypes. Silicon (Si) application significantly (P < 0.05) increased plant biomass at both control as well as under saline conditions. Genotypes differed significantly for their response to applied Si in terms of biomass production. Silicon application significantly (P < 0.01) increased potassium (K+) concentration in shoots. Enhanced salinity tolerance in wheat by Si application was attributed to increased K+ uptake thereby increasing K+/sodium (Na+) ratio and lower Na+ translocation towards shoot.  相似文献

The present study was designed to assess the effect of organic materials, i.e., farm yard manure (FYM), poultry manure (PM) and sugar cane filter cake (FC) along with mineral nitrogen on yield and soil organic fertility. Our results indicated that among sole nitrogen (N) sources, highest grain yield was recorded from poultry manure. In the case of integrated N sources, maximum grain yield was obtained from 25% poultry manure + 75% mineral N source. Grain ear?1 and 1000 grain weight was highest with the application of poultry manure among sole N sources. Highest grain ear?1 and 1000 grain weight was observed from 25% poultry manure + 75% mineral N source. Application of poultry manure as sole N sources resulted maximum increase in soil total N and organic matter when compared with other sole N sources. Among N sources applied in different proportion, maximum total soil N was recorded from 25% poultry manure + 75% mineral N. We concluded from these experiments that integrated application of N sources in different proportion greatly improves the N economy and enhance crop productivity in low N soils.  相似文献

A field experiment was conducted in continuity of our previous study to assess the effect of Rhizobium inoculation (RI) and phosphorus fertilization (P) on growth, yield, nodulation, and P use efficiency of soybean. Different treatments were i) Rhizobium strains (0, S377, S379, and the mixture of S377+S379 i.e. S0, S1, S2, S3); ii) phosphorus fertilizer (0, 50, 100 kg ha?1 i.e. P0, P1, P2). Soybean variety NARC-1 was as used as a testing crop. Results indicated that root and shoot growth increased by RI treatments whether used alone or in combination with P. Rhizobium inoculation increased plant height up to 12% while P did not show significant effect. Increases in soot dry weight, root length and root dry weight due to RI and P was 57 and 22%, 42 and 7%, 55 and 25%, respectively, over the control treatment. Number of nodules increased from 73 in the control to a maximum of 151 in S2 while the number increased from 90 in the control to 147 in P2. Combine application of strains and P increased nodules number from 65 at S0P0 to a maximum of 183 at S2P2. Similar response was also observed for nodules mass. Soybean seed yields ranged between 1710 and 2335 kg ha?1 against 1635 kg ha?1 in the control indicating a maximum of 43% increase over control. Concentration of N and P in plants and their uptake was significantly increased by RI and P. RI also increased the N and protein content of soybean seed. Apparent recovery efficiency (ARE) of applied P was 10?12% and the agronomic, agrophysiological, recovery, utilization efficiencies, and harvest index of P decreased with increasing P rates. Nodule number significantly correlated with the DM yield (r2 = 0.78) and seed yield (r2 = 0.63) while P uptake significantly correlated with root length (r2 = 0.48) and root mass i.e. dry weight (r2 = 0.65). Also a significant correlation existed between N uptake and DM yield (r2 = 0.98) and N uptake and seed yield (r2 = 0.65), P uptake and DM yield (r2 = 0.73), and P uptake and seed yield (r2 = 0.83). The results of present study indicated a substantial growth and yield potential of soybean under the hilly region and increase in yield and N2 fixing potential (nodulation) can be achieved by applying Rhizobium inoculation with P fertilization.  相似文献

Nineteen agrochemical traits of 20 almond inter-specific backcrosses progenies were evaluated and compared for three consequence years to find out their phenotypic diversity and determine the relationships of fruit quality traits in almond × peach backcrosses breeding progenies. The variation was observed for traits of phenology parameters (blooming time, ripening time), Physical parameters (fruit weight, width, height, shape, thickness, skin pubescences, colour and flower type), chemical parameters (total sugar content, soluble solids content and acidity) and sensory parameters (attractiveness, taste, and flavor) and yield. Many fruit characteristics that are important to breeders are present in this collection. A high variability was found in the evaluated almond progenies and significant differences were found among them in all studied quality attributes. Year-by-year variations were observed for majority of traits. A significant correlation was found among the fruit height, fruit width, skin pubescences and yield. Fruit height showed a significant positive correlation with fruit weight and fruit thickness and some other traits and a negative correlation with the titratable acidity, skin pubescences and fruit flavour. A high negative correlation was found between the fruit weight and titratable acidity (?0.8). Low coefficients were got between the flower colour and skin pubescences. In addition, principal component analysis it possible to established similar groups of genotypes depending on their quality characteristics and to study relationships among pomological traits in almond progenies evaluated.  相似文献

Background: There is evidence that CD36 promotes foam cell formation through internalizing oxidized LDL (ox-LDL) into macrophages; therefore, it plays a key role in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. In addition, CD36 expression seems to be mediated by nuclear receptor peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ). The aim of the present study was to evaluate and compare the effect of PPAR-γ ligands, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) as an anti-atherogenic factor and ox-LDL as an atherogenic factor on CD36 expression. Mechanism of PPAR-γ action and its ligands in CD36 expression were also investigated. Methods: Raw 264.7 macrophage cell line was treated with ox-LDL (100 and 150 μg protein/LDL) and EPA (100 and 200 μM) for 24 and 48 hours in absence or presence of PPAR-γ inhibitor, T0070907. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western-blotting were used for analysis of gene and protein expression, respectively. Results: Raw 264.7 exposures to ox-LDL and EPA resulted in increased expression of CD36 mRNA and protein; however, mRNA and PPAR-γ protein were not up-regulated significantly. Pre-incubation of cells with T0070907 led to decreased expression of CD36 when treated with ox-LDL and EPA. Conclusion: It was confirmed that both EPA and ox-LDL increased CD36 expression but not PPAR-γ, and also co-treatment with PPAR-γ inhibitor decreased CD36 expression. We concluded that up-regulation of CD36 depends on PPAR-γ activation and is not related to increased expression of PPAR-γ. Induction of CD36 by EPA showed that CD36 suppression is not the means by which ω-3 fatty acids (EPA) provide protection against formation of atherosclerotic plaque.
