The River Bush (Northern Ireland) is an index river for the estimation of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., stock size, population dynamics and marine survival rates. Marine survival estimates are based on the number of smolts counted at a trap 3.5 km upstream of the river outlet. The survival from release to coastal inshore waters for acoustic‐tagged smolts released at the Bushmills trap varied between 32% and 68%, with both year and brightness during river exit playing a significant role in explaining the variations in survival. This constitutes an important survival bottleneck. Contrary to true marine mortality, this significant loss of smolts in the river and nearshore environments could be reduced by focused management actions. More studies on other rivers, where smolts are enumerated above the head of tide, could further partition smolt and post‐smolt mortality, help differentiate true marine survival and help understand fluctuations in adult returns. 相似文献

The high incidence of cardiovascular disease and vitamin D deficiency in chronic kidney disease patients is well known. Vitamin D activation by omega-3 fatty acid (FA) supplementation may explain the cardioprotective effects exerted by omega-3 FA. We hypothesized that omega-3 FA and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) supplementation may increase 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) levels compared to 25(OH)D supplementation alone in hemodialysis (HD) patients that have insufficient or deficient 25(OH)D levels. We enrolled patients that were treated for at least six months with 25(OH)D < 30 ng/mL (). Patients were randomized to treatment for 12 weeks with cholecalciferol supplemented with omega-3 FA or a placebo. Levels of 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D were measured after 12 weeks. The erythrocyte membrane FA contents were also measured. Levels of 25(OH)D were increased in both groups at 12 weeks compared to baseline. The 1,25(OH)2D levels at 12 weeks compared to baseline showed a tendency to increase in the omega-3 FA group. The oleic acid and monounsaturated FA content decreased, while the omega-3 index increased in the omega-3 FA group. Omega-3 FA supplementation may be partly associated with vitamin D activation, although increased 25(OH)D levels caused by short-term cholecalciferol supplementation were not associated with vitamin D activation in HD patients. To analyze the structure of bacterial communities in spinach roots and in the nonrhizosphere soil, we used PeR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments separated by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). DGGE revealed a large number of band patterns, which were ascribed to various bacterial species composing each of the bacterial communities. The pattern from the roots was less complex than that from the soil. It is considered that DGGE analysis is suitable for studies of bacterial community structure in soil-plant ecosystems. 相似文献

Spatial evaluation of the uncertainty associated with climate data would allow reliable interpretation of simulation results for regional crop yield using gridded climate data as input to a crop growth model. The objective of this study was to examine the spatial uncertainty of regional climate model data through determining optimal seeding date with the ORYZA2000 model for assessment of climate change impact on rice productivity in Korea. The optimal seeding date was determined at each grid point using regional climate model outputs under the RCP 8.5 scenarios. In major rice production areas such as inland plain regions, where temperatures of regional climate data were relatively accurate, the optimal seeding date determined using those gridded data were reasonable. However, areas with complex terrains including areas near bodies of water, e.g. coastal areas, riverbasins, lakes, and mountainous areas, had a relatively large uncertainty of the optimal seeding date determined using the regional climate data. These results indicated that the uncertainty of regional climate data at a high spatial resolution of 12.5 km should be taken into account in the regional impact assessment based on crop growth simulations in Korea. In addition, further studies would be merited to assess the impact of climate change on rice yield at an ultra-high spatial resolution of 1 km in Korea. Crop yields were projected to decrease after the 2020s when crop yield simulations from inland plain areas were considered, which suggested that adaptation strategies should be established and implemented in the near future. 相似文献

Six growing lambs were used to evaluate the feeding value of two forage‐based diets in a long‐term feeding period by measuring body weight (BW) gain, digestibility, nitrogen (N) retention and microbial N (MBN) yield. The animals were fed imported low‐quality timothy hay (TH) with concentrate diet (THD) or imported low‐quality Italian ryegrass straw (IR) with concentrate diet (IRD) for 9 months. The forages were offered at 2% BW, and concentrate was fed at 40% of forage intake. The BW gain averaged 82.6 and 66.2 g/day for THD and IRD, respectively, without showing significant difference. Average forage intake (% BW) was significantly greater for IR than for TH, although it was not affected by feeding periods. The digestibility did not differ between diets or periods. The numerically greater (P = 0.06) ratio of retained N to absorbed N for IRD than that for THD was prominent. Neither diet nor period had significant effect on MBN supply and efficiency of MBN synthesis. The results suggest that the IR‐based diet can be also used for long‐term periods of feeding to growing ruminant animals as a grass hay‐based diet without any detrimental effects on nutrient utilization and growth performance. 相似文献

Two feeding trials were carried out to determine the optimum feeding rates in juvenile olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, at the optimum rearing temperature. Fish averaging 5.0 ± 0.11 g (mean ± SD) in experiment 1 and 20.2 ± 0.54 g (mean ± SD) in experiment 2 were fed a commercial diet at the feeding rates of 0%, 3.0%, 4.0%, 4.25%, 4.5% and 4.75% body weight (BW) day?1 and satiation (5.52% BW day?1) in experiment 1 and 0%, 1.0%, 2.0%, 3.0% and 3.5% BW day?1 and satiation (4.12% BW day?1) in experiment 2 at 20 ± 1 °C. Both feeding trials lasted for 2 weeks. Results from experiment 1 indicated that weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of fish fed to satiation were significantly higher than those of fish fed at other feeding rates while feed efficiency (FE) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) of fish fed at 4.25% BW day?1 were significantly higher than those of fish fed to satiation and fish fed at 3.0% BW day?1 (P < 0.05). In experiment 2 WG, SGR and PER leveled out after the feeding rate of 3.5% BW day?1 whereas FE reached a plateau at 3.0% BW day?1. anova of FE indicated that the optimum feeding rates in 5.0 and 20 g juvenile olive flounder could be 4.25% and 3.0% BW day?1, respectively. Broken line analysis of WG suggested the optimum feeding rates of 5.17% and 3.47% BW day?1 in 5.0 and 20 g fish, respectively. Therefore, these results indicated that the optimum feeding rates could be >4.25 but <5.17% BW day?1 for 5.0 g, and it could be >3.0 but <3.47% BW day?1 for 20 g size of juvenile olive flounder at the optimum rearing temperature. 相似文献

A competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed for the fungicide iprovalicarb, using a polyclonal antibody produced against a hapten conjugated through the carboxyl group on the benzene ring to keyhole limpet hemocyanin. Under an optimized condition using a heterologous format, an IC(50) of 3.51 ng/mL and the lowest detection limit of 0.065 ng/mL were obtained. When the isopropoxy group was removed from the iprovalicarb structure for the synthesis of a hapten, the resulting hapten was not successful as an immunogen, indicating that the isopropyl moiety was an important epitope, as evidenced by the cross-reactivities of some structurally related compounds. When applied to the real crop and water samples, the recoveries were in the range of 80.52-144.70% (n = 4) and 72.11-100.43% (n = 4), respectively. Accordingly, this ELISA can be used as a useful method for monitoring iprovalicarb residues in crop and water samples. 相似文献

Three novel composite adsorbents, sulfate-coated zeolite (SCZ), hydrotalcite (SCH), and activated alumina (SCAA), were characterized and employed for the removal of phosphate from aqueous solution using equilibrium and kinetic batch experiments. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction spectrum were used to study the surface characteristics of the coated layer. Equilibrium tests showed that the adsorption of phosphate followed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The powder-type SCZ was better for phosphate removal (maximum binding energy, ???=?111.49?mg?g?1) compared to hydrotalcite and activated alumina. The adsorption of phosphate was considered to take place mainly by ion exchange. The kinetic data followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The initial adsorption of phosphate onto the sulfate-coated adsorbents was fast, indicating that the sulfate-coated materials developed in this study can be used as promising adsorbents for the removal of phosphate from wastewater or sewage. 相似文献

One- and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) methods were used to determine a three-dimensional model of an eight-base-pair DNA fragment (d-GGGTACCC) cross-linked with psoralen in solution. Two-dimensional nuclear Overhauser effect experiments were used to assign the spectrum and estimate distances for 171 proton pairs in the cross-linked DNA. Triploidy was induced in two selected lines of autotransgenic mud Ioach Misgurnus mizolepis containing no heterospecific genetic material. Cytological evaluations, including cellular DNA content, chromosome count, and erythrocyte measurement, proved the successful induction of triploidy. Patterns of Southern blot hybridization and tissue distribution of GH mRNA in autotransgenic triploids were similar to those of diploid autotransgenics. The autotransgenic triploids also displayed growth acceleration 22–25 times that of nontransgenic diploids, although the acceleration was relatively modest when compared to their diploid transgenic counterparts (more than a 30-fold increase). Significantly improved feed conversion was observed in both autotransgenic diploids and triploids, ranging from 1.8 to 2.0 times that in nontransgenics. Autotransgenic triploids were sterile at gonadal level, evidenced by significantly retarded and abnormal gametogenesis. With the persistence of accelerated growth and enhanced feed conversion efficiency, the autotransgenic triploid mud loach may offer economic benefits to aquaculture. Total absence of heterospecific genetic material and sterility may also allay public concern regarding food safety and environmental risk of crossbreeding between transgenics and conspecific populations. 相似文献
