In two dogs that received orthovoltage radiotherapy, osteosarcoma developed in irradiated bone 38 and 77 months after treatment. Irridiated bone in one dog was presumably normal prior to radiotherapy; irradiated bone in the other was infiltrated by an acanthomatous epulis. Both osteosarcomas were probably radiation induced. Radiation-induced bone sarcoma is an important, but uncommon, complication of radiaotherapy. 相似文献

Eighty-six cats with non-dilated left ventricular myocardial hypertrophy were studied retrospectively. Cats were categorized by two-dimensional echocardiography as having symmetric ventricular hypertrophy (Type I), asymmetric with predominant septal thickening hypertrophy (Type II), and asymmetric hypertrophy with predominant free-wall thickening (Type III). The distribution of hypertrophy was judged subjectively and objectively. Subjective and objective results were similar (P= 0.03) although overlap existed between groups. Morphologic patterns (Types I, II, and III) were compared with breed, age, sex, heart rate, percent fractional shortening, left atrial size, serum creatinine concentration, and the presence (yes/no) of pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, pericardial effusion, heart murmur, dyspnea, thromboembolism, hyperthyroidism, and being alive at the time of study. Interventricular septal thickness, left ventricular free wall thickness, percent fractional shortening, and left atrial size additionally were compared to 3-month survival. Cats with Type HI hypertrophy were more likely to experience thromboembolism than cats with Type II hypertrophy (P= 0.05) and cats with Type I hypertrophy were more likely to have heart murmurs than cats with Type III (P= 0.02). No other significant associations were found in comparison to pattern of hypertrophy. Both left atrial size and percent fractional shortening significantly correlated with 3-month survival (P < 0.001 for each). The degree of interventricular septal wall thickness was associated with 3-month survival (P= 0.02) when known hyperthyroid cats were excluded from the study group, while left ventricular free wall thickness consistently was not associated with survival. This study demonstrates the heterogeneity of hypertrophy in cats with hyper-trophic heart disease and provides predictors of survival (left atrial size, percent fractional shortening, and interventricular septal wall thickness when compared with euthanasia/spontaneous death data). 相似文献

The biological significance of mast cells and angiogenesis in canine melanomas is unclear. Eighty canine melanomas (56 malignant and 24 benign), investigated to determine the relationship between mast cell count (MCC), microvessel density (MVD) and clinicopathology, revealed significantly higher MCC and MVD counts in malignant melanomas. Evaluation of the prognostic significance of MCC and MVD in malignant melanomas showed a significant correlation between MCC and MVD both within and at the edges of the tumour. Multivariate analysis indicated that MCC and MVD were independent predictors of survival but the former was a significantly better prognostic marker. Greater numbers of mast cells and microvessels were found in malignant melanomas of poor prognosis. The findings demonstrate a prognostic significance of MCC and MVD in canine melanocytic tumours. 相似文献

Mast cells are immune cells that are involved mainly in type 1 hypersensitivity reactions, and they have been implicated in
tumour angiogenesis. In this study we assessed the presence of mast cell numbers and microvessel density during the progression
and regression stages of natural spontaneous canine transmissible venereal tumours (CTVT). Mast cells were demonstrated by
histochemical staining with toluidine blue, alcian blue and safranin O. Microvessel counts were demonstrated by immunohistochemical
labelling with an antibody against the endothelial cell marker factor VIII. Mitotic cells, apoptotic cells and tumour infiltrating
lymphocytes were counted from haematoxylin–eosin-stained sections. Tumour fibrosis was evaluated on Masson's trichome-stained
sections. The results showed that progressing tumours had significantly higher mast cell counts and microvessel counts at
the invasive edges of the tumours than did regressing tumours. In both the progressing and regressing tumours, microvessel
counts were significantly positively correlated with mast cell counts. Regressing tumours had significantly higher mast cell
counts of the whole tumour than progressing tumours. The results also showed that progressing tumours had significantly higher
mitotic rate than regressing tumours, and fibrosis and apoptosis were significantly higher in regressing tumours than progressing
tumours. There were no significant differences between the biochemical and haematological values of dogs with progressing
and regressing tumours. These results suggests that mast cells play a role in CTVT progression probably by promoting vascularization
at the invasion front during the progression phase, and that mast cell count could be used as one of the histological factors

During the period between January 1999 and December 2000, the distribution and seasonal patterns of amphistome infections in cattle in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas of Zimbabwe were determined through monthly coprological examination. Cattle faecal samples were collected from 12 and nine dipping sites in the highveld and lowveld communal grazing areas, respectively. Patterns of distribution and seasonal fluctuations of intermediate host-snail populations and the climatic factors influencing the distribution were also determined by sampling at monthly intervals for a period of 24 months (November 1998 to October 2000) in six dams and six streams in the highveld and in nine dams in the lowveld communal grazing areas. Each site was sampled for relative snail density and the vegetation cover and type, physical and chemical properties of water, and mean monthly rainfall and temperature were recorded. Aquatic vegetation and grass samples 0-1 m from the edges of the snail habitats were collected monthly to determine the presence or absence of amphistome metacercariae. Snails collected at the same time were individually checked for the emergence of larval stages of amphistomes. A total of 16,264 (calves 5418, weaners 5461 and adults 5385) faecal samples were collected during the entire period of the study and 4790 (29.5%) of the samples were positive for amphistome eggs. For both regions the number of animals positive for amphistome eggs differed significantly between the 2 years, with the second year having a significantly higher prevalence (P < 0.01) than the first year. Significantly higher prevalences were found in the highveld compared to the lowveld (P < 0.001), for adult cattle than calves (P < 0.01), and in the wet over the dry season (P < 0.01). Faecal egg output peaked from October to March in both years of the study. Bulinus tropicus, Bulinus forskalii and Biomphalaria pfeifferi were recorded from the study sites. The main intermediate host for amphistomes was B. tropicus with a prevalence of infection of 8.5%. However, amphistome cercariae were also recorded in Biom. pfeifferi and B. forskalii. Amphistome cercariae were recorded from both the highveld and lowveld areas with peak prevalence during the post-rainy season (March to May). Metacercariae were found on herbage from the fringes of the snail habitats between February and August, with most of the metacercariae concentrated on herbage 0-1 m from the edges of the habitats. Based on the epidemiological findings a control programme was devised. From this study, large burdens of immature flukes could be expected in cattle during the dry months. Since adult cattle would be resistant to the pathogenic effects of the migrating immature amphistomes the target for control would be young animals being exposed to the infection for the first time. Therefore, the first anthelmintic treatment can be administered in calves in mid June when maximum migration of immature amphistomes starting 3-4 weeks after infection in the early dry season would be expected. A second treatment could be given in late July or early August to remove potentially dangerous burdens of immature flukes acquired later in the dry season. Where resources permit, another strategy would be to treat against the mature flukes in March or April in order to reduce the number of eggs deposited on pastures and the opportunity for infection of the intermediate host snails. Serum samples from 474 domestic pigs (Sus scrofa) from Zimbabwe were tested for anti-Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies using the indirect fluorescent antibody test. The results showed that T. gondii infection is widespread in Zimbabwean pigs. Seroprevalence was lowest in fattening pigs from large and small-scale commercial farms that practise good hygiene (19.75% of 238) and highest in backyard scavenging pigs (35.71% of 70). Only 11.7% (11) of the 127 positive samples had titres of > or = 1:400 and nine (81.82%) of these 11 originated from pigs reared under poor hygienic conditions. A prevalence of 3.51% was found in the same group of fattening pigs using an indirect IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay at the single serum dilution of 1:400. Two dogs with acute onset atrial fibrillation (AF) were cardioverted to sinus rhythm by the administration of 2 mg/kg lidocaine given intravenously. Each dog was believed to have AF initiated because of elevated vagal tone. This report has potential clinical impact for a subset of dogs because it offers a treatment to circumvent persistent AF. Furthermore, this encouraging result of a pharmacologic cardioversion suggests that further investigation would be of interest to ascertain the effectiveness and mechanism of the antiarrhythmic action of lidocaine in vagally induced AF. 相似文献
