Seasonal behaviour of NO3 - in surfacewater is often used as an indicator on a catchment's ability toretain N from atmospheric deposition. In this paper, weclassify 12 pristine sites (five streams and seven lakes) insouthernmost Norway according to the N saturation stageconcept. All examined sites were acid-sensitive and had annualmean NO3 - concentrations in the range 6–36 μeqL-1. At lake sites with relatively long water residencetimes, hydrology will have a damping effect on the seasonalNO3 - oscillations in the outlet streams. Under givenrunoff conditions (1.0–2.2 m yr-1), the seasonalNO3 - pattern was clearly affected when lake:catchmentarea ratios exceeded 0.15 and the total residence time of lakesin the catchments exceeded 0.3 yr. In such cases, annualmean NO3 - concentration rather than seasonalvariations may be the better indicator of N saturation. Toaccount for this we propose a set of supplementary criteria forsuch lake systems, defining limit values for annual meanNO3 - concentrations within each stage class. Beforebeing applied on a broader scale, however, we recommend anexamination of additional lake-dominated catchmentsrepresenting a larger gradient in ecosystem types, N depositionlevels and hydrologic regimes. When applying the supplementarycriteria on the Norwegian sites, two were classified as stage 0(no saturation), five as stage 1 (early stage of saturation)and five as stage 2 (saturated – moderate N loss). No siteswere showing symptoms of stage 3, which characteriseswatersheds that are net sources of N, rather than sinks. Theresults indicate a great variability in N retention capacity inthe study region, despite the fact that many of the catchmentsexperience relatively uniform N deposition amounts and climaticconditions. This suggests that much of this variability must bedue to specific catchment characteristics as e.g. soil type,soil depth, and vegetation cover.  相似文献

Immunity to Ostertagia ostertagi infections in calves develops slowly and only becomes manifest towards the end of a grazing season in which they have been exposed to the parasite. In an attempt to hasten the onset of immune reactions, three immunization protocols were set up. Twenty four heifers were allocated into four groups. Beginning in January, animals in two of the groups were inoculated with four 1-monthly increasing dosages of either 'normal' or 'chilled' (hypobiosis-prone) larvae, those in the third group received a single large infection with 'chilled' larvae and those in the fourth group served as non-infected controls. All animals were turned out on a common pasture in late April. Development of immunity was evaluated through determinations of faecal egg counts, live weight gains, serum pepsinogen levels and specific serum antibody responses of three isotypes (IgG1, IgG2 and IgA). Significantly reduced egg excretions in the immunized groups were apparent early in the season, indicating that the immunizations had, in this respect, been efficacious. The 'chilled' and 'normal' larvae seemed equally efficient given as multiple and single infections. A single large dosage of 'chilled' larvae seemed to have adverse effects. Only moderate antibody responses were elicited probably because of low challenge infection level on pasture. Considerable variation in responses existed between and within the four groups, for which reason conclusions regarding correlations between antibody isotype responses and immune effects on parasites could not be made.  相似文献

The present study was conducted in the 1993 grazing season with yearling calves exposed to a pasture with a natural mixed trichostrongyle larval infection. It was shown that daily feeding with the microfungus Duddingtonia flagrans during the first 2 months of the season led to a lowered herbage infectivity and a reduced acquisition of Ostertagia sp. and Cooperia sp. later in the season. In addition, the procedure delayed the onset of clinical disease. This was due to the nematode-destroying effects of the fungi in the dung excreted by the fungus-treated calves, as evidenced by results from a parallel in vitro assay on faecal larval cultures. The paper discusses future research needs before practical biological control can be implemented.  相似文献

Until recently, Angiostrongylus vasorum was not considered to be an endogenous Danish parasite, since demonstration of this worm had been confined to necropsy findings in 2 dogs, both of which had visited France. During the last 2 years, however, clinical cases have been diagnosed among a considerable number of Danish dogs, none of which had ever been outside Denmark. All these cases have occurred north of Copenhagen, where an endemic focus seems to exist. In this field survey A. vasorum was found for the first time in wild Danish red foxes. Furthermore, experimental infections showed that the parasite can be transferred between foxes and dogs. Consequently, the wild fox population must be considered a potential reservoir for transfer of A. vasorum to domestic dogs.  相似文献

Interactions between the predacious hyphomycete Arthrobotrys oligospora and third-stage larvae of nine animal-parasitic nematodes were tested in vitro. The trap-inducing capabilities of the ruminant trichostrongylus Cooperia oncophora, C. curticei, Haemonchus contortus and Ostertagia ostertagi and of equine cyathostomes were almost comparable to those of free-living soil nematodes, and significantly higher than those of the porcine Oesophagostomum dentatum and Oe. quadrispinulatum and of the murine Nematospiroides dubius. The trap-forming potential of Dictyocaulus viviparus was poor. All animal-parasitic nematodes were rapidly captured when fungal traps had been pre-induced in high numbers. The possible influence of predacious fungi on animal-parasitic nematode populations under natural conditions in the field is discussed.  相似文献

Four methods employed in the diagnosis of experimental porcine trichinellosis (trichinoscopy, digestion method, immunofluorescence and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)) were compared by eleven laboratories in the countries of the European Economic Community and Sweden. The aim of this study was to test the reliability of ELISA during the onset of T. spiralis infection. Material from conventionally raised pigs infected with 1500 or 10000 larvae was compared to uninfected controls at Day 17 and Day 21 post infection.The serological techniques gave higher percentages of positive results than the direct techniques. Specific antobodies could be demonstrated with ELISA at an earlier stage and at higher percentages than with the other methods. ELISA micro-assay was the most sensitive procedure.  相似文献

This paper describes clinically manifest infections occurring as early as June and early July in first-season grazing calves in Denmark during the period 1972-1987. Two severe outbreaks in 1976, included in our experiments, were studied in detail. Herbage infectivity was particularly high in grass tufts surrounding cow pats that were present in high numbers around the time of turnout. It is hypothesized that the preceding extremely dry summer followed by a hard winter had indirectly retarded degradation of dung pats and thereby favoured the overwintering of the larval populations in the dung reservoirs. In a third experiment, conducted in the same year, the epidemiological pattern was more normal; presumably due to artificial irrigation of the pasture during the drought. Early-season cases that were recorded in 1980 and 1987 could possibly be related to cold winters and/or very early turnout. The findings are discussed in the light of ecological factors responsible for the breakdown of cow pats. The clinical implications are seen in relation to current control methods.  相似文献

Different screening methods for selection of biological control agents (BCAs), for controlling soil and seed-borne diseases, are discussed. The shortcomings of laboratory methods focused on mechanism of action are discussed and we conclude that these methods should be used with caution if candidates with multifactorial or plant mediated mechanisms of control are to be obtained. In vitro screens may be useful for specific groups of microorganisms, thus, screens for antibiotics may be relevant for Streptomyces spp., and promising results have been obtained using soil plating or precolonized agar methods to screen for mycoparasitism and competitive saprophytic ability. Experience with screening in the Nordic programme Biological control of seed borne diseases in cereals is summarized. Research in the four participating countries – Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark – followed the same paradigm: that of obtaining antagonists, well adapted to different Nordic environments, and developing them as effective BCAs. Potential antagonists were isolated from different sources and in planta screening methods were developed in order to optimize selection of antagonists effective against a range of seed borne pathogens. Screens in the laboratory or greenhouse were followed by screening in the field. The different screening procedures are compared and evaluated.  相似文献

The relationship between acidity and benthic invertebrate communities was investigated in two small streams in coniferous forests in central Jutland, Denmark, during 1992 and 1993. Stream pH was acid (mean pH 4.8 and 5.4) and alkalinity fluctuated greatly with mean values around zero. During rain events, water from springfed reaches upstream were mixed downstream with brown humic acid water with high aluminium content, and pH declined from circumneutral near the springs down to pH below 4 over a very short distance (0.5–1.5 km). The benthic invertebrate communities in the most acidic downstream reaches of both streams were dominated by filipalpian stoneflies, mainly Leuctra nigra (Olv.). Community composition remained very similar throughout the sampling period despite variations in pH. In the upper (neutral) reaches invertebrates intolerant of low pH such as Gammarus pulex L. were found. The concentrations of chloride and sulphate in the streams were more than double the concentrations in a nearby moorland stream indicating a strong impact of acidifying atmospheric deposition on the two forest streams. Results of this study indicate that afforestation with conifers on sandy Danish soils with low buffering capacity (about 25% of the total Danish land area) may lead to an increased acidification of surface waters and thereby also to an impoverished aquatic fauna.  相似文献
