High oleic corn is a genetic variant that contains more protein, lipid, and oleic acid and less linoleic acid than regular corn. A study was conducted to compare weight gain and feed conversion of year-1 and year-3 channel catfish Ietalurus punctatus , and processing yield, body composition and frozen storage stability of year-3 channel catfish fed high oleic corn and number 2 yellow (regular) corn in extruded production diets. A commercial-type diet formulated to contain 30% protein and made with regular corn served as a control. A second diet contained high oleic corn in place of regular corn on an equal (air-dry) weight basis. A third diet contained high oleic corn in substitution for regular corn and part of the soybean meal to limit protein content to 28%, which was equal to that of the control diet. The experimental diets were fed to year-1 channel catfish (average initial weight 5.1 g) in aquaria for 10 wk and to year-3 channel catfish (average initial weight 1.07 kg) in 0.04–ha ponds for 14 wk. Substitution of high oleic corn for regular corn on an equal (air-dry) weight basis provided significant gain ( P < 0.01) of year-1 channel catfish but not of year-3 fish. Use of high oleic corn diets designed to be equal in protein content did not affect weight gain of either group of fish. Replacement of regular corn with high oleic corn caused a significant ( P < 0.01) reduction in linoleic acid but no significant ( P > 0.20) increase in oleic acid in the flesh of fish. Proximate body composition, dressing yield, fillet yield, visceral fat, and liver weight were not significantly different among treatments. Sensory scores of fillets frozen for 3 and 6 mo were not significantly different among treatments. Peroxide value, thiobarbituric acid number and free fatty acids increased with frozen storage time but were not different among treatments.  相似文献

Thirty-nine horses included 3 pregnant mares were examined by inoculating with formalin inactivated-virus vaccine for EVA. Antibody response of horses after one dose vaccination was somewhat poor and 50% effective inoculum dose of the vaccine should be included 10(8.4) pfu of virus before inactivation. After 2 doses given at an interval of 4 weeks, the horses developed such high titer of SN antibody as up to 1:5,120. The SN titer declined rather rapidly, but supplemental administration of the vaccine at an interval of more than 2 months elicited a prompt antibody response and SN titers persisted as 1:80 to 1:320 at 6 months after the administration. Therefore, supplemental administration of the vaccine as booster every 6 months or 1 year would be capable of maintaining high titer of SN antibody. The inactivated-virus vaccine prevented horses from clinical disease of EVA and protected pregnant mares from abortion by challenge exposure with virulent virus. Fifty percent protective dose in SN titer of 1:43 was confirmed by clinical signs and viremia.  相似文献

Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) field isolates show genetic and antigenic diversity. At least 14 subgenotypes of BVDV-1 and 4 of BVDV-2 have been identified in Artiodactyla worldwide. Of these, 6 subgenotypes of BVDV-1 and 1 of BVDV-2 have been isolated in Japan. Previously, we reported that each subgenotype virus expresses different antigenic characteristics. Here we investigated the reactivity of neutralizing antibodies against representative strains of Japanese BVDV subgenotypes using sera from 266 beef cattle to estimate the prevalence of this epidemic virus among cattle in Japan. Antibody titers at concentrations at least 4-fold higher than antibodies against other subgenotype viruses were considered subgenotype specific. Subgenotype-specific antibodies were detected from 117 (80.7%) of 145 sera samples (69.7% against BVDV-1a, 1.4% against BVDV-1b, 8.3% against BVDV-1c, and 1.4% against BVDV-2a). The results suggest that neutralization tests are useful in estimating currently epidemic subgenotypes of BVDV in the field.  相似文献

In this study, antimicrobial activity of aminoreductone (AR), a product formed during the initial stage of the Maillard reaction, against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was evaluated. The significant growth inhibition of all 51 MRSA isolates irrespective of drug susceptibility by AR was observed. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of AR ranged from 13 to 26 mM. The bactericidal activity of AR was evaluated by a killing assay with multiples of MIC, and it was recognized to depend on its dose. The combined effects of AR and antibiotics frequently used for the treatment of infections caused by Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as amikacin (AN), ciprofloxacin, imipenem and levofloxacin, were examined. As a result, AR did not interfere with these antibiotic activities against 12 MRSA isolates selected and showed the advanced effect of growth inhibition in combination with antibiotics. Moreover, the inhibitory effects of AR were similar to those of AN, an antibiotic with known adverse effects, some serious. These findings show that AR is a naturally formed antimicrobial agent present in thermally processed foods with potential health benefits in medical practice.  相似文献

The discrepancy between the magnetic hysteresis properties of magnetite crystals that are precipitated from solution (<0.3 micrometer) and of crushed sifted grains (>0.3 micrometer) is not an inherent property of magnetite but is caused by the highly stressed state of crushed material and by adhering finer fragments. The size trends of magnetic properties exhibited by submicrometer-size precipitated grains continue in the size range from 1 micrometer to 1 millimeter in a set of hydrothermally recrystallized magnetite crystals. Coercive forces of these narrowly sized crystals follow a power law over a wide size range (0.1 micrometer to 1 millimeter) as predicted by theory. Dislocation etch pits show similar dislocation densities for hydrothermally grown (3 x 10(10) meter (-2)) and natural (1 x 10(10) meter(-2)) magnetite crystals. Hysteresis parameters of hydrothermally grown crystals are similar to those of natural crystals but are about one-fifth of those for crushed grains.  相似文献

Method for the analysis of respiratory quinones in soil was developed to characterize soil microbiota. The respiratory quinones were extracted with a mixture of chloroform and methanol using a Wahling blender or a sonicator and cleaned-up by a silicagel column cartridge. The quinone species were determined by reverse-phase high performance liquid chromatography. Spectra of peaks were measured with a photodiode array detector to examine the purity. More than 90% of extractable quinones in soil were recovered by three extractions. The recovery of quinones, added to soil as freeze-dried powder of microorganisms, was higher than 96%. This procedure led to higher representative results as follows. Fluctuations within 95% of cumulative frequency were 13% for the extracted amount of quinones and 20% for the dissimilarity, respectively. The quinone profiles of four soils were determined as follows: a soil from the aerobic layer of a paddy field, an ando soil and two yellow upland soils which had received chemical fertilizers with and without farmyard manure. The quinone profiles displayed clear differences in the microbial composition and in the microbial diversity among the soils. It was demonstrated that the analysis of the respiratory quinone profile was useful to characterize the microbial community structure in soil.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In this study, the visual acuity, visual accommodation, and spectral sensitivity of the elkhorn sculpin were determined. The elkhorn sculpin Alcichthys alcicornis is a typical groundfish that has conspicuously large eyes. They are caught by bottom gillnets, trawl nets, bottom line angling, and other fishing methods. Although fish behavior arising from visual stimuli is important in these fishing methods, there is little information available regarding the visual sensitivity of the elkhorn sculpin . Three specimens, with total lengths of 300–310 mm, were studied. Visual acuity was calculated, from the maximum cone density in the retina, to be between 0.10 and 0.14. The minimum separable angles were calculated to be 7.14–10.37 min. Measurement of lens movement in five specimens indicated that the near-point distance was between 0.87 and 1.53 times the total length. Lens direction was estimated to be 11–22° in the downward visual axis. Spectral sensitivity was also determined electrophysiologically by recording S-potentials. Three types of response were obtained from 21 specimens, including L responses that showed hyperpolarization at all wavelengths of stimulating light, and two C responses that showed wavelength-dependent hyperpolarization and depolarization. Based on these results, the elkhorn sculpin has color vision and its sensitivity is most acute in light with a wavelength of 554 nm.  相似文献

Investigation of cranial and spinal deformities in Atlantic salmon smolts from Chile immediately after sea transfer, over two successive crops, demonstrated ankylosis of the mandibular articulation, spinal foreshortening, fracture of vertebrae and rarefaction of osseous and cartilaginous tissues including the operculum. As a result the mouth was permanently agape and opercula could be folded back on themselves. All affected fish had been transferred to sea water at 20 °C plus and fed on particular commercial diets. Fish in cooler areas, or on diets high in vitamin C and phosphorus in the high temperature zone, were clinically normal. The condition has not recurred following dietary adjustment.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Fish catch efficiency can vary with the design of the trap entrance. To clarify how trap entrance design affects catch efficiency, the responses of fish to different trap entrance designs with different inclination angles or funnel lengths were observed. The passing ratio (i.e. catch) increased and then decreased with increasing inclination angle. An inclination angle of 34° had the highest passing ratio of 43%; the lowest passing ratio was 8% at an angle of 53°. A significant difference in passing ratio was found between two entrance designs ( P  = 0.006). There were significant differences in passing ratio for entrance designs with different funnel lengths ( P  = 0.01). The highest passing ratio was 38% for a funnel length of 29 cm. The approach and passing durations were also compared among the trap entrance designs. The results suggest that modifying the entrance shape can significantly improve the catch efficiency.  相似文献
