A total of 457 Duroc, 137 Landrace, 131 Duroc x Landrace, and 110 three-and four-breed crossbred pigs were used to estimate multiplicative adjustment factors. Sixty-one Duroc, 24 Landrace, 18 Duroc x Landrace, and 16 three- and four-breed crossbred litters were weighed every 3 or 4 d from 13 to 30 d of age. Prediction equations for estimating pig weights from birth to 30 d and from 13 to 30 d of age are presented. Multiplicative adjustment factors for adjusting pig or litter weights to a 21-d basis for pigs or litters that are weighed between 13 and 30 d of age for different breeds and crossbred combinations are listed. Breed, litters within breed, and pigs within litter x breed effects adjusted for age at weighing were different (P less than .01). Quadratic regression coefficients of weight on age of pig from 13 to 30 d of age did not differ (P greater than .10) from zero for Landrace and three- and four-breed crossbred pigs but were significant for Duroc and Duroc x Landrace pigs.  相似文献

Four maintenance media were compared for the preservation of the sensitivity of drag swabs and to assess the survival of Salmonella spp. on drag swabs at reduced temperatures. The effects of Difco double-strength skim milk (2 x SM), 2% buffered peptone water (BPW), a modified liquid Cary-Blair transport medium (LCB), and lactose broth holding medium were compared, as were storage periods of various lengths. The results with enzyme-linked immunosorbent antigen capture assay and highly selective plating media detection systems showed that 2 x SM had the highest level of recovery of salmonellae after prolonged storage, both under refrigeration at 4 C for 3 days and under frozen conditions of -15 C for 2 weeks.  相似文献

Sewage samples collected from animal wastes and from effluents at an animal disease laboratory were inoculated with known numbers of pathogenic organisms and subjected to various doses of gamma radiation from a 60Co source. Surviving test organisms were quantitatively determined by selective and enrichment techniques. The experiment was modeled as a quantal assay in which probit analysis was applied to obtain D10 values. The D10 value represents the irradiating dose required to reduce the population by 90%. The D10 value ranged from 13.4 krad for Campylobacter fetus to 156.6 krad for Streptococcus faecalis in animal sewage. However, the D10 value for the laboratory effluent was generally lower. Based on the estimated D10 values, the rating of the test organisms in decreasing order of radiosensitivity appeared as follows: Brucella abortus, Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus, Campylobacter jejuni, Campylobacter coli, Campylobacter laridis, Mycobacterium fortuitum, Aspergillus fumigatus, Salmonella muenster, Candida albicans, Clostridium difficile and Streptococcus faecalis. If the D5 and D1 values were utilized, this listing would be only slightly altered.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate in vitro effects of radial shock waves on membrane permeability, viability, and structure of chondrocytes and articular cartilage. SAMPLE POPULATION: Cartilage explants obtained from the third metacarpal and metatarsal bones of 6 horses. PROCEDURE: Equine cartilage was subjected to radial shock waves and then maintained as explants in culture for 48 hours. Treatment groups consisted of a negative control group; application of 500, 2,000, and 4,000 impulses by use of a convex handpiece (group A); and application of 500, 2,000, and 4,000 impulses by use of a concave handpiece (group B). Effects on explant structure were evaluated by use of environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Membrane permeability was determined by release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). Chondrocyte viability was assessed by use of vital cell staining. Comparisons of LDH activity and nonviable cell percentages were performed by ANOVA. RESULTS: Cell membrane permeability increased significantly after application of 2,000 and 4,000 impulses in groups A and B. A significant decrease in cell viability was observed for application of 4,000 impulses in explants of group A. There was no detectable damage to integrity of cartilage explants observed in any treatment group by use of ESEM. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Radial shock waves do not appear to structurally damage articular cartilage but do impact chondrocyte viability and membrane permeability. Caution should be exercised when extremely high periarticular pulse doses are used until additional studies can determine the long-term outcome of these effects and appropriate periarticular treatment regimens can be validated.  相似文献

To assess the rabbit as a model for the study of Johne's disease pathogenesis, a breeding group of adult and juvenile New Zealand white rabbits were orally challenged with three doses of the Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis wildtype bovine strain, CLIJ623, on three occasions. Faecal culture, post-mortem tissue bacteriological culture and histopathology were used to monitor the disease progression in the rabbits for more than 2 years. Of 4 adult and 16 juvenile orally dosed rabbits M. paratuberculosis organisms were recovered bacteriologically from two and three animals, respectively, using the BACTECtrade mark radiometric culture system. Tissue sites from which the bacteria were recovered included the mesenteric lymph nodes, ileocaecal valve, vermiform appendix, caecum, proximal colon and jejunum. Body weight loss, reduced abdominal fat and mild lesions were observed at necropsy in four infected rabbits. Diarrhoea and persistent faecal shedding of bacteria were not observed. Faecal culture did not yield any cultivable mycobacterial organisms on solid media.  相似文献

Interleukin-2 and interleukin-12 have been used independently to successfully treat the induced and the spontaneous tumours in animals. This trial was done to determine if a combination of IL-2 and IL-12 in the treatment of spontaneous bovine ocular squamous cell carcinomas (BOSCC) would be more successful than IL-2 or IL-12 therapy by themselves. For this trial, we selected 25 BOSCC tumours seen on Holstein Fresian cows in Beatrice, Zimbabwe. The cows were randomly assigned to a treatment group of 5 days of IL-2 (200,000 U/day), 5 days of IL-12 (0.5 microg/day) or 5 days of IL-2 (200,000 U/day) and IL-12 (0.5 microg/day). At 20 months after treatment, the IL-2 therapy group had 63% complete regressions; the combination group had 38% complete regressions, which were significantly higher than the IL-12 group, which had 0% complete regressions at 20 months, despite having 29% complete regressions at 6 months. These results show that IL-2 therapy by itself and in combination with IL-12 is more successful than IL-12 by itself. However, combination therapy does not improve the outcome in comparison to IL-2 as a single therapy. It also proves that IL-2 is consistently successful in the therapy of BOSCC with over 60% complete regression, which corresponds to a number of other studies we have done on IL-2 therapy of BOSCC [Rutten, V.P.M.G., Klein, W.R., De Jong, W.A., Misdorp, W., Den Otter, W., Steerenberg, P.A., De Jong, W.H., Ruitenberg, E.J., 1989. Feedlot producers could optimize the value of cattle in a given market grid if they were able to improve the uniformity of the body composition between cattle among loads. Allelic variation due to a single nucleotide transition (cytosine [C] to thymine [T] transition that results in a Arg25Cys) has been demonstrated to be associated with higher leptin mRNA levels in adipose tissue and increased fat deposition in mature beef, but the effect on economically important carcass traits has not been investigated in either market-ready steers or heifers. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the effects of a leptin SNP on the quality grade (QG), yield grade (YG), and weight of beef carcasses. A slaughter trial was conducted using 1,435 crossbred finished heifers and 142 crossbred finished steers as they entered the slaughter facility. Canada QG tended (main effect of genotype P = 0.16, but P < 0.01 for both CC vs. TT and CT vs. TT) to be affected by leptin genotype. Specifically, 7.6 and 7.1% more TT carcasses graded Canada AAA or higher than the CT and CC carcasses, respectively, which supports the suggestion that the leptin SNP is associated with carcass fat. The proportion of carcasses grading Canada YG 1, 2, or 3 was affected (P < 0.01, P = 0.05, and P = 0.02 for YG 1, 2, and 3) by leptin genotype. The proportion of TT carcasses of Canada YG 1 was 12.5 and 15.1% lower than that of CT and CC carcasses, respectively, indicating that rearing animals under the same management and feeding system may result in greater carcass fat and a lower probability of the proportion of carcasses grading YG 1 within certain genotypes. The carcass weights of animals with the CC genotype tended (P = 0.07) to be higher than those of the TT genotype (365.5 vs. 362.3 kg). No significant difference was observed between the TT and CT genotypes in carcass weight. The observed associations between leptin genotype and carcass characteristics may represent an opportunity to genetically identify animals that are most likely to reach specific marketing groups.  相似文献
