Influence of day length on seasonal endocrine responses were studied using stallions (seven per group). Treatments included 1) control, with natural day length; 2) 8 h light and 16 h dark (8:16) for 20 wk beginning July 16, 1982 then 16:8 from December 2, 1982 until March 5, 1984 (S-L); or 3) 8:16 from July 16, 1982 until March 5, 1984 (S-S). Blood was sampled hourly for 5 h every 4 wk; sera were pooled within horse, and luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and testosterone were quantified. Blood was collected every 20 min for 24 h every 8 wk and 2 wk before and after the December light shift. Samples were assayed for LH. Stallions in all groups underwent seasonal changes (P less than .05) in concentrations of LH, FSH, testosterone and basal concentrations of LH and amplitude of LH pulses. Season X treatment (P less than .05) reflected on early recrudescence of LH, FSH and testosterone concentrations in S-L stallions followed by earlier regression. Except for FSH hormone concentrations were depressed in S-S stallions. Number of LH pulses per 24 h was unaffected by season, treatment or their interaction. Mean amplitude of LH pulses was affected (P less than .05) by season X treatment; maximal values occurred in April vs February for control and S-L stallions, and minimal values occurred in December vs April. The season X treatment interaction (P less than .05) similarly affected basal concentrations of LH. Thus, seasonal changes in concentrations of LH, FSH and testosterone can be driven by photoperiod. Increased peripheral concentrations of LH during seasonal recrudescence of reproductive function apparently results from more LH secreted per discharge without an increased frequency of LH discharges.  相似文献

Fertility of young mares after long-term anabolic steroid treatment   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effect of prior treatment with anabolic steroids was studied in 46 three-year-old mares. In the preceding year, these mares had been assigned to 1 of 4 treatment groups and had received the manufacturer's recommended dosage of 1.1 mg of boldenone undecylenate (BU)/kg of body weight, 4.4 mg of boldenone undecylenate (4 BU)/kg, 1.1 mg of nandrolone decanoate (ND)/kg, or 0.04 ml of sesame oil/kg (control, C). Mares had received an injection every 3 weeks for 54 weeks for a total of 19 injections, with the final injection in December. In the following breeding season, fewer (P less than 0.05) mares in all groups previously administered anabolic steroids displayed estrous behavior than did mares in the control group. Duration of estrus was shortened (P less than 0.05) in mares that had received steroids. Abnormal sexual behavior that was observed during steroid treatment continued (P less than 0.05) for up to 6 months after treatment ceased. However, observations of abnormal behavior declined with time (P less than 0.05). All mares in each treatment group ovulated by the end of the trial, and the interval to first ovulation was similar (P greater than 0.05). Ovarian size, follicular development, and conditions of the tubular genitalia was adversely (P less than 0.05) affected in mares in all steroid-treatment groups until approximately the middle of March. After that time, no difference was noted among groups. First-cycle pregnancy rates were 83%, 67%, 50%, and 42% for mares in the untreated, BU, 4 BU, and ND groups, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

High concentrations of estrogens in the peripheral circulation during late gestation inhibit synthesis of LH and markedly reduce pituitary content of LH at the end of pregnancy in most domestic species. Because blood concentrations of estrogen peak shortly before mid-gestation in the mare and then gradually decrease until parturition, we hypothesized that pituitary content of LH may increase during late gestation. To test this hypothesis 10 horse mares were challenged with a maximally stimulatory dose (2 micrograms/kg) of GnRH on d 240 and 320 of gestation and d 3 after parturition. A separate group of four mares were treated with GnRH on d 2 or 3 estrus. Blood samples were collected at -2, -1, 0, .25, .5, .75, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 h relative to injection of GnRH and serum was analyzed for concentration of LH and FSH. Basal serum concentration and total quantity of LH released after GnRH stimulation (assessed by determining the area under the response curve) were not different on d 240 and 320 of gestation or on d 3 after parturition (12.5 +/- 3.5, 5.7 +/- 1.5 and 29.1 +/- 12.1 ng.min/ml, respectively) and were less (P less than .05) than on d 3 of estrus (311.0 +/- 54.0 ng.min/ml). There was little difference in the basal serum concentration of FSH at any of the time points examined. Oesophageal obstruction caused by a hairball is described in a nine-year-old Persian cat. Diagnosis was based upon radiological and oesophagoscopic findings. The obstruction was managed conservatively by forceps delivery of part of the hair, repulsion of the remainder into the stomach, and oral laxative medication. The fur was clipped prophylactically. With the commercial release in Australia in 2004 of a vaccine against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV; Fel‐O‐Vax FIV®), the landscape for FIV diagnostics shifted substantially. Point‐of‐care (PoC) antibody detection kits, which had been the mainstay for diagnosing FIV infection since the early 1990s, were no longer considered accurate to use in FIV‐vaccinated cats, because of the production of vaccine‐induced antibodies that were considered indistinguishable from those produced in natural FIV infections. Consequently, attention shifted to alternative diagnostic methods such as nucleic acid detection. However, over the past 5 years we have published a series of studies emphasising that FIV PoC test kits vary in their methodology, resulting in differing accuracy in FIV‐vaccinated cats. Importantly, we demonstrated that two commercially available FIV antibody test kits (Witness? and Anigen Rapid?) were able to accurately distinguish between FIV‐vaccinated and FIV‐infected cats, concluding that testing with either kit offers an alternative to PCR testing. This review summarises pertinent findings from our work published in a variety of peer‐reviewed research journals to inform veterinarians (particularly veterinarians in Australia, New Zealand and Japan, where the FIV vaccine is currently commercially available) about how the approach to the diagnosis of FIV infection has shifted. Included in this review is our work investigating the performance of three commercially available FIV PoC test kits in FIV‐vaccinated cats and our recommendations for the diagnosis of FIV infection; the effect of primary FIV vaccination (three FIV vaccines, 4 weeks apart) on PoC test kit performance; our recommendations regarding annual testing of FIV‐vaccinated cats to detect ‘vaccine breakthroughs’; and the potential off‐label use of saliva for the diagnosis of FIV infection using some FIV PoC test kits. We also investigated the accuracy of the same three brands of test kits for feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) diagnosis, using both blood and saliva as diagnostic specimens. Based on these results, we discuss our recommendations for confirmatory testing when veterinarians are presented with a positive FeLV PoC test kit result. Finally, we conclude with our results from the largest and most recent FIV and FeLV seroprevalence study conducted in Australia to date.  相似文献
