Earth-Based Observations of the Galileo Probe Entry Site

Earth-based observations of Jupiter indicate that the Galileo probe probably entered Jupiter's atmosphere just inside a region that has less cloud cover and drier conditions than more than 99 percent of the rest of the planet. The visual appearance of the clouds at the site was generally dark at longer wavelengths. The tropospheric and stratospheric temperature fields have a strong longitudinal wave structure that is expected to manifest itself in the vertical temperature profile.     

Coal gasification for electric power generation

The electric utility industry is being severely affected by rapidly escalating gas and oil prices, restrictive environmental and licensing regulations, and an extremely tight money market. Integrated coal gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants have the potential to be economically competitive with present commercial coal-fired power plants while satisfying stringent emission control requirements. The current status of gasification technology is discussed and the critical importance of the 100-megawatt Cool Water IGCC demonstration program is emphasized.     

Diet modifications to improve finishing pig growth performance and pork quality attributes during periods of heat stress

A total of 196 barrows (88 kg) were used in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments and housed in a facility (seven pigs per pen) where temperatures cycled between 27 and 35 degrees C. Treatments consisted of (as-fed basis) two CP levels (13.6 or 11.3%) and two levels of added fat (1 or 8%). Diets were formulated to the same true digestible lysine:ME ratio (1.68 g of lysine/Mcal of ME). Diets were fed and growth variables were measured until pigs reached 114 kg of BW. Ham and LM (loin) 24-h pH (PH24), and light reflectance (CIE L*, and a*, and b*, and hue angle) were taken after slaughter. Additionally, loins were removed and measured for i.m. fat, moisture, glycolytic potential, and subjected to a 7-d retail display evaluation that measured pH, light reflectance, and subjective color and odor score. The remaining boneless lumbar loin segment was vacuum-sealed for 14 d and subsequently measured for pH, light reflectance, and color. Pigs fed the high-CP, low-fat diet had a lower ADG than all other treatments (P = 0.06). High-fat feeding resulted in improved ADG (CP x Fat; P = 0.06) and G:F (Fat effect; P < 0.01). Higher fat and lower protein levels both increased final BF (P = 0.07). Pigs fed the low-CP diets had lower ham PH24 (P < 0.01). Loin PH24 was higher with high fat feeding (P = 0.10). GONG Observations of Solar Surface Flows

Doppler velocity observations obtained by the Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG) instruments directly measure the nearly steady flows in the solar photosphere. The sun's differential rotation is accurately determined from single observations. The rotation profile with respect to latitude agrees well with previous measures, but it also shows a slight north-south asymmetry. Rotation profiles averaged over 27-day rotations of the sun reveal the torsional oscillation signal-weak, jetlike features, with amplitudes of 5 meters per second, that are associated with the sunspot latitude activity belts. A meridional circulation with a poleward flow of about 20 meters per second is also evident. Several characteristics of the surface flows suggest the presence of large convection cells.     

Integration of environmental, agronomic, and economic aspects of fertilizer management

Nitrogen fertilization is a substantial source of nitrogen-containing trace gases that have both regional and global consequences. In the intensive wheat systems of Mexico, typical fertilization practices lead to extremely high fluxes of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO). In experiments, lower rates of nitrogen fertilizer, applied later in the crop cycle, reduced the loss of nitrogen without affecting yield and grain quality. Economic analyses projected this alternative practice to save 12 to 17 percent of after-tax profits. A knowledge-intensive approach to fertilizer management can substitute for higher levels of inputs, saving farmers money and reducing environmental costs.     

Simple transport medium for the isolation of Chlamydia psittaci from clinical material

Infectious elementary bodies of Chlamydia psittaci in tissue samples from field cases of enzootic abortion were placed in five different transport media (A to E). In one medium, in the absence of refrigerative storage, the organism remained viable for 30 days and at 4 degrees C for 34 days. This was medium D; it consisted of sucrose (74.6 g/litre), K2HPO4 (1.237 g/litre), L-glutamic acid (0.721 g/litre), fetal calf serum (10 per cent v/v), vancomycin and streptomycin (100 micrograms/ml) and nystatin and gentamicin (50 micrograms/ml). Samples of this transport medium were supplied to veterinary investigation centres throughout the UK. Of 1862 samples submitted for diagnosis of enzootic abortion only 1.55 per cent were so contaminated that chlamydiae could not be detected. This transport medium permits the isolation of C psittaci from clinical material for up to about one month, even in the absence of conventional storage facilities.     

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for Brucella ovis specific antibody in ram sera

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of Brucella ovis specific antibody in ram serum was compared with the currently employed complement fixation test (CFT). Rabbit anti-sheep IgG coupled to horseradish peroxidase was used as the antibody-enzyme conjugate and 2,2'-azino-di[3-ethylbenzthiazolin sulphonate (6)] as the substrate. The ratio of the optical density at 414 nm for positive and negative control sera (P/N ratio) was used to optimise the parameters of the test. Ram serum samples (16,527) were tested using ELISA and CFT (warm and cold) over a one year period. The ELISA was more sensitive and provided a more reliable measure of B ovis specific antibody than did the CFT. Implications of employing ELISA as the sole test in an eradication scheme are discussed.
