Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to determine the influence of nitrogen (N) fertilization and DTPA‐extractable soil zinc (Zn) on Zn concentration in wheat (Triticum aestivum L., cv. Pioneer 2375) grain. Application of zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) in the range of 0 to 8 mg Zn kg‐1 increased linearly DTPA‐extractable Zn in an incubated calcareous soil from 0.3 to 5.0 mg kg‐1. Application of these rates of ZnSO4 to the same soil under greenhouse conditions increased Zn concentration of wheat grain from 26 to 101 mg kg‐1. The influence of 134 kg urea‐N ha‐1 on Zn concentration in wheat grain at eight field sites, with DTPA‐extractable soil Zn levels ranging from 0.3 to 4.9 mg kg‐1, was studied. Nitrogen fertilizer increased wheat‐grain yields in four of the eight experiments but had little effect on grain‐Zn concentration. Grain‐Zn concentration ranged from 31 to 45 mg kg‐1 in N‐fertilized plots at the various sites and was related (r=0.74*) to DTPA‐extractable soil Zn.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The fate of isoxaflutole (IFT) in soil is closely related to soil sorption. Sorption and transformation of IFT were investigated in laboratory incubations with four soils, and these results were used to interpret greenhouse studies using IFT to control several weed species. RESULTS: Degradation proceeded by previously observed pathways to form diketonitrile (DKN) and benzoic acid (BA) derivatives, as well as traces of unidentified products. Over the course of the incubation, DKN was the dominant active form of the herbicide present in the experimental system, and was thus critical to the soil activity of the herbicide for weed control. CONCLUSION: Control of most weed species appeared to be a function of both sorption and biodegradation of DKN, with greatest weed control being observed in soils in which a significant portion of the DKN that was formed persisted and remained bioavailable over the course of the incubation. Eight-year-old plantations (11) of silver birch were studied on abandoned agricultural land in Estonia. Trees were planted on uncovered soil and on polyethylene. After eight growing seasons, the height and diameter at breast height of the trees grown on polyethylene were significantly (P < 0.001) larger than corresponding parameters of the trees grown on uncovered soil. The annual height increment of the birches grown on the polyethylene was significantly (P < 0.05) larger during six growing seasons after planting compared to that of the trees grown on uncovered soil. However, annual height increments were not significantly different in the 7th and the 8th growing seasons. The use of polyethylene mulching had a statistically significant effect (P < 0.001) on the height of the beginning of the live crown in 8-year-old plantations. The differences between the values of live crown ratio of the trees grown on polyethylene and the values of live crown ratio of the trees grown on uncovered soil decreased during six growing seasons. However, by the 7th and 8th growing seasons, there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the values of the live crown ratio. The height growth of silver birch grown without mulching as well as with mulching was found to be more intensive on Glossic Podzoluvisol, Calcaric Cambisol, Calcaric Luvisol and Dystric Gleysol; however, the height growth was more intensive on mulched soil. The height growth of the birches was modelled on the single-tree and stand levels for five soil types.  相似文献

An outbreak of nervous disease in Standardbred horses occurred near Bendigo, in south-eastern Australia, in October 1980. Over a two week period 11 horses in four training stables were affected with gait abnormalities, depression and recumbency. Eight of the 11 died. The results of an investigation implicated Clostridium botulinum toxin as the cause. The toxin was food-borne as a contaminant of oaten chaff.  相似文献

Porcine embryos were flushed from mated donors and examined for cleavage stage. One- and two-cell embryos were randomly allotted to one of the five following in vitro treatments: M199 with Earle's salts, a modified Tyrode's medium (TL), TL supplemented with 10 mM N-2-hydroxyethyl-piperazine-N'-2-ethanesulfonic acid (HEPES) (TLH), TLH supplemented with 5.5 mM glucose (TLHG), or TLH supplemented with 5 mM glutamine (TLHGL). The bicarbonate concentration of TLH, TLHG, and TLHGL was 2 mM, compared with the 25 mM concentration in M199 and TL. Embryos in M199 and TL were incubated in 95% air:5% CO2 at 39 degrees C. Those in the remaining three treatments were incubated in air at 39 degrees C. Embryos incubated in TL and M199 did not develop past the four- to eight-cell stage, whereas the proportions of embryos developing to the compact morula or blastocyst stage by d 7 of culture in the other treatments were as follows: TLHG, 49.1%; TLHGL, 59.4%; TLH, 63.5% (P less than .005). These results indicate that porcine embryos can be cultured from the one-cell stage to blastocyst in a simple HEPES-buffered medium in air. The ability of porcine embryos to develop without supplemental CO2 may be an important finding for use in situations in which embryos must be transported for long periods before embryo transfer.  相似文献

The acoustic reflex (AR) and brain stem auditory-evoked response (BAER) were recorded in adult cats 5 minutes after IM administration of xylazine (1 mg/kg) and after IM administration of ketamine (10 mg/kg). Ipsilateral and contralateral AR were recorded at 10 and 20 dB above acoustic reflex threshold 5 minutes after xylazine administration and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine administration. Monaural BAER were recorded 5 minutes after xylazine and 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, using stimulus intensities of 90-, 80-, and 70-dB hearing level (HL). Additional BAER were recorded at 10, 15, and 25 minutes after ketamine, using the 90-dB HL stimulus. Pre- and postinjection comparisons were made for threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR and for latency and amplitude of waves I through VI of the BAER. At both stimulus intensities before and after ketamine administration threshold for the ipsilateral reflex was significantly lower (P greater than 0.05) than for the contralateral reflex. The threshold, latency, and amplitude of the AR were unaffected (P greater than 0.05) by the injection of ketamine after xylazine. The amplitude of BAER waves was not affected (P greater than 0.05) by ketamine after xylazine for each of the 3 stimulus intensities. Latency of the 90-dB HL-evoked response was increased (P less than or equal to 0.05) for waves III/IV at 5 and 35 minutes after ketamine, and for wave V at each of the postinjection times, except at postinjection minute 15.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Coal fly ash has physical and chemical characteristics that makeit useful as a soil amendment, one of the more important beingthe potential to permanently improve the soil water relations ofsandy, drought-prone soils. We axemined changes in theinfiltration rate and water holding capacity of a sandy soilafter application of high rates (up to 950 Mg ha-1) of aClass F fly ash. Fly ash was applied to large field plots byeither conventional tillage (CT; moldboard plow-disk) orintensive tillage (IT; chisel plow-rotovate-disk), and tomicroplots using a rototiller. Infiltration rate (i) wasmeasured in both studies with a disk permeameter on threeoccasions over a 12-month period. Ash effects on gravimetric water content (θg) at the 0–40 cm soil depth were measuredduring a 168 hr period following a 2.5 cm rainfall event andwater release curves (33 to 500 kPa) were constructed in thelaboratory using soils from the large plots. In both studiesi was decreased by ~80% one year after additionof fly ash and θgin ash-amended soil was higher than unamended soil throughoutthe 168 hr monitoring period. Soil water distribution variedwith tillage; the IT treatment had the highest θg increasesin the 0–20 cm depth while the CT treatment had θgincreases throughout the 0–40 cm depth. Soil water content anddistribution in ash-amended microplots were similar to ITtreatments. Fly ash amendment not only increased water holdingcapacity but also increased plant available water by 7–13% inthe 100–300 kPa range. These results suggest fly ash amendmentmay have the potential to improve crop production in excessivelydrained soils by decreasing i and increasing the amountof plant available water in the root zone.  相似文献

Real-time on-site monitoring of analytes is currently in high demand for food contamination, water, medicines, and ingestible household products that were never tested appropriately. Here we introduce chemical methods for the rapid quantification of a wide range of chemical and microbial contaminations using a simple instrument. Within the testing procedure, we used a multichannel, multisample, UV-vis spectrophotometer/fluorometer that employs two frequencies of light simultaneously to interrogate the sample. We present new enzyme- and dye-based methods to detect (di)ethylene glycol in consumables above 0.1 wt % without interference and alcohols above 1 ppb. Using DNA intercalating dyes, we can detect a range of pathogens ( E. coli , Salmonella , V. Cholera, and a model for Malaria) in water, foods, and blood without background signal. We achieved universal scaling independent of pathogen size above 10(4) CFU/mL by taking advantage of the simultaneous measurement at multiple wavelengths. We can detect contaminants directly, without separation, purification, concentration, or incubation. Our chemistry is stable to ± 1% for >3 weeks without refrigeration, and measurements require <5 min.  相似文献
