Summary Barley plants are able to accumulate glycinebetaine (betaine) at high levels in their leaves in response not only to water and salt stress but also to cold stress. Such accumulation of betaine during acclimation to cold is associated to some extent with freezing tolerance in leaves of barley plants, as previously demonstrated with near-isogenic lines that differed only in a single gene for the spring type of growth habit (Plant, Cell and Enyironment 17: 89–95, 1994). We now present evidence that the levels of betaine accumulated during cold acclimation might be associated with the earliness or lateness of the maturity of cultivars, namely, that late cultivars accumulate more betaine than early cultivars. Moreover, the grade of the vermalization requirement of the cultivars seemed unlikely to be associated with the level of betaine acumulated during cold acclimation. However, the trait that controlled accumulation of betaine during cold acclimation was not linked with the earliness or lateness of the maturity of cultivars. The higher levels of betaine in the late cultivars might have resulted from co-selection for lateness of maturity and freezing tolerance, which is generally a requirement in the areas of Japan where such late cultivars were originally cultivated. 相似文献

The displacement and signal intensity (SI) of the pituitary posterior lobe were evaluated on T1 weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images in 28 dogs with pituitary dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH). Compared with normal dogs, the posterior lobe was displaced dorsally in the pituitary of the PDH dogs. Correlation between the pituitary height/brain area (P/B) ratio and the displacement of the posterior lobe in the PDH dogs suggests that dorsal displacement of the posterior lobe increases in accordance with enlargement of the pituitary. As to the SI of the posterior lobe, the PDH dogs showed significantly lower SI in comparison to the normal dogs. Taken together, these results suggest that assessment of the displacement and SI of the posterior lobe of the pituitary on T1-weighted MR images is useful for the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma. In pituitary microadenoma that presents no apparent tumorigenesis on MRI, evaluation of these values may be useful for diagnosis and selection of an appropriate therapy. 相似文献

Seventeen samples of soil humic acids, two fractions of soil fulvic acid sample, and several related compounds such as lignin, tannin, flavonoid and artificial humic substances were decomposed in conc. KOH solution at 180°C. Succinic acid, glutaric acid, phloroglucin, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, vanillic acid, protocatechuic acid, 3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzoic acid, and gallic acid were detected in the degradation products of humic acids. The amounts of these degradation products were discussed in relation to the degree of humification or the sources of the humic acid samples. Succinic acid also resulted from glucose, polymaleic acid, and the humic acid and humin prepared from glucose, but glutaric acid resulted only from glucose humic acid and glucose humin but not from glucose and polymaleic acid. Succinic acid and glutaric acid were supposed to result from the same structural portions in humic acids because of the very significant positive linear correlation between their amounts. p-Hydroxybenzoic, vanillic, protocatechuic, and 3,4-dihydroxy-S-methoxybenzoic acids were presumed to result mainly from lignin structure in humic acids. Soil humic acids yielded small amounts of gallic acid although the yields by hydrolysable tannins were in large amounts. The yields of above-mentioned degradation products from humic acids decreased with increasing degree of humification. Phloroglucin resulting from ftavonoids including condensed tannins were also found in the degradation products of humic substances. Its yield showed no linear correlation with RF value of humic acid, and is presumed to be rather related to the vegetation at the sites of soil sampling. 相似文献

Short‐chain fatty acids (SCFA), such as acetate, propionate and n‐butyrate, are the main end‐products of fermentation in the large intestine. SCFA are rapidly absorbed from the large intestinal mucosa to provide energy to the host. In this study, high‐sensitivity detection of SCFA was demonstrated in blood using the gas chromatometry with mass spectrometry (GC‐MS). Few studies have measured SCFA in porcine blood. Therefore, SCFA concentrations in the ileal (IV), cecal (CV), portal (PV) and abdominal (AV) vein blood, urine (Ur) and saliva (Sa) were measured by GC‐MS. All body fluids were collected from four 5‐month‐old pigs. Cecal (CD) and ileal (ID) digesta, and cecal (CM) and ileal (IM) mucosa were also collected and their corresponding SCFA concentrations were measured using ion‐exclusion high‐performance liquid chromatography. GC‐MS analyses were successful to determine the SCFA concentrations in the porcine body fluids. n‐Butyrate concentration was surprisingly high in CV and its proportion remained higher in CV than that in CD and CM. Acetate showed a constantly high proportion in all porcine body fluids. Propionate was detected at a relatively high proportion in CV, IV and PV, but was low in AV. 相似文献

A real-time fluorogenic polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay based on SYBR green that allows for sensitive, reproducible, and accurate quantification of Babesia gibsoni (Asian genotype). DNA from peripheral blood of infected dogs was developed. Standard curves were created by plotting the input amount of a standard template, constructed with plasmid DNA containing 182 base pairs (bp) of the p18 gene, against threshold cycle numbers. The curves showed a wide dynamic range (1,000,000-fold input) and high correlation values (>0.99). The PCR amplification efficacy of the standard template was similar to that of intact genomic DNA obtained from peripheral blood with B. gibsoni infection. The detection limit of the assay was 9 parasites/microl of blood with B. gibsoni infection. The intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation of the threshold cycles ranged from 0.70% to 1.89% and from 1.18% to 1.92%, respectively. This assay system was found to be reproducible and accurate for the quantification of parasite DNA in experimentally infected dogs and far more sensitive than traditional microscopic examination. 相似文献

Reproductive performance of two types of timed artificial insemination (TAI) protocols with or without intravaginal progesterone insert (CIDR) was investigated in a commercial herd of Holstein heifers. A total of seventy-four heifers with 14.4 months of age were allocated to two groups; Ovsynch (n=44) and estradiol benzoate (EB) used Heatsynch (EB-Heatsynch, n=30), and each group was additionally divided into two subgroups with CIDR insertion from day 0 to 7 (n=36) and without CIDR group (n=38). Blood was collected for progesterone (P4) analysis and ovarian finding was monitored with ultrasonography. Heifers in CIDR-treated group resulted in higher pregnancy rate as compared to No-CIDR-treated group (63.9% vs 21.1%, P<0.01). Heifers with functional corpus luteum (CL) on day 0 resulted in significantly higher pregnancy rate in CIDR-treated group than No-CIDR-treated group (day 0: 67.9% vs 13.0%, P<0.01). CIDR insertion suppressed the intermediate ovulation during the first 7 days and the period from the second GnRH or EB administration to TAI as compared to No-CIDR-treated group (first 7 days: 33.3% vs. 52.6%; P<0.05, before TAI: 11.1% vs. 37.0%; P<0.05). In conclusion, the selected TAI protocols with CIDR provided acceptable pregnancy rate and contributed to the economical improvement by shortening the average age of first calving approximately for 2.5 months as compared to the previous management without TAI protocols. 相似文献

Long‐distance transportation is sometimes inevitable in the beef industry because of the geographic separation of major breeding and fattening areas. Long‐distance transportation negatively impacts production and health of cattle, which may, at least partly, result from the disturbance of metabolism during and after transportation. However, alteration of metabolism remains elusive in transported cattle. We investigated the effects of transportation on the metabolomic profiles of Holstein steer calves. Non‐targeted analysis of serum concentrations of low molecular weight metabolites was performed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Transportation affected 38 metabolites in the serum. A pathway analysis suggested that 26, 10, and 10 pathways were affected immediately after transportation, and 3 and 7 days after transportation, respectively. Some pathways were disturbed only immediately after transportation, likely because of feed and water withdrawal during transit. Nicotinate and nicotinamide metabolism, and citric acid cycle were affected for 3 days after transportation, whereas propionate metabolism, phenylalanine and tyrosine metabolism were affected throughout the experiment. Four pathways were not affected immediately after transportation, but were altered thereafter. These results suggested that many metabolic pathways had marked perturbations during transportation. Metabolites such as citric acid, propionate, tyrosine and niacin can be candidate supplements for mitigating transportation‐induced adverse effects. 相似文献
