The aims of this study were to determine the impact of body site, vigorous brushing and topical melatonin treatment on hair regrowth after clipping normal dogs. Siberian Husky dogs were randomly assigned to three groups of eight dogs each. All dogs had the lumbosacral region and both lateral thighs clipped. The left thigh and lumbosacral area received no treatment and were compared in all 24 dogs. Eight dogs had the right thigh treated with 0.1% melatonin twice daily for 2 months, and hair regrowth was compared with the left thigh. Eight dogs had the right thigh brushed twice daily for 2 months, and hair regrowth was compared with the left thigh. Eight dogs had neither thigh treated. Hairs were plucked before and 2 months postclipping, and the proportion of hair growth from the original length was calculated and compared as described above. Biopsy samples were collected before and after treatment to determine if brushing induced dermal inflammation and melatonin increased the proportion of anagen follicles. Proportionally, left thigh hairs were significantly longer compared to lumbosacral hairs 2 months postclipping. No significant differences in hair regrowth were noted between the nontreated thigh and the thigh treated with melatonin or brushed. No significant difference in dermal inflammation was noted before and after brushing. No significant differences were observed in the proportion of anagen follicles before and after topical melatonin treatment. Our results showed that the hairs in the lumbosacral region were proportionally shorter than lateral thigh hairs 2 months postclipping. Horses are considered accidental hosts for Sarcocystis neurona and they often develop severe neurological disease when infected with this parasite. Schizont stages develop in the central nervous system (CNS) and cause the neurological lesions associated with equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. The present study was done to examine the ability of S. neurona merozoites to penetrate and develop in equine peripheral blood leukocytes. These infected host cells might serve as a possible transport mechanism into the CNS. S. neurona merozoites penetrated equine leukocytes within 5 min of co-culture. Infected leukocytes were usually monocytes. Infected leukocytes were present up to the final day of examination at 3 days. Up to three merozoites were present in an infected monocyte. No development to schizont stages was observed. All stages observed were in the host cell cytoplasm. We postulate that S. neurona merozoites may cross the blood brain barrier hidden inside leukocytes. Once inside the CNS these merozoites can egress and invade additional cells and cause encephalitis. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To identify factors affecting prognosis, outcome, and complications associated with pemphigus foliaceus in dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 43 dogs with pemphigus foliaceus. PROCEDURE: Medical records were reviewed for signalment, age at diagnosis, duration to diagnosis, body area affected, initial immunosuppressive regimens and concurrent use of antimicrobials and sucralfate or histamine receptor 2 blocking agent, adverse effects of treatment, duration of treatment, number of visits for follow-up care, cause of death, and credentials of the veterinarians responsible for continued care. RESULTS: The case fatality rate was 60.5%. Factors significantly correlated with survival time included concurrent use of antimicrobials during initiation of immunosuppressive treatment and a lower number of adverse effects to treatment. Treatment times lasting more than 10 months from diagnosis correlated significantly with survival. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Treatment with or prophylactic use of antimicrobials may be warranted during initial immunosuppressive treatment. The inverse correlation between survival time and number of adverse treatment effects was not unexpected because it was reflective of the owners' decision to euthanatize their dogs and of corticosteroid-related secondary diseases. Survival beyond the tenth month of treatment predicted long-term survival, which suggests that dogs require careful management during the early months of treatment. 相似文献
Human acylation-stimulating protein (hASP) up-regulates triacylglycerol synthesis in human adipocytes. The objectives of this research were 1) to determine the effect of hASP on triacylglycerol synthesis in bovine adipose explants and 2) to determine whether nutritional status influences the sensitivity of adipose tissue to hASP. Fresh s.c. adipose tissue was sectioned into 20- to 30-mg explants and incubated for 1 to 6 h in M199 media containing 3% BSA and either 0.75 mM [1-14C]palmitate, 0.75 mM [9, 10-3H]oleate, or 2.5 mM [1-14C] acetate, as well as hASP and(or) insulin. The explants were extracted, and lipid fractions were separated by TLC and quantified by liquid scintillation. Acetate incorporation into lipids increased 15 to 30%, and palmitate or oleate incorporation increased 10 to 25%, when explants were exposed to hASP, although this response was not significant in every experiment. Insulin increased triacylglycerol synthesis in some experiments, but not in others. Our interpretation is that acylation-stimulating protein (ASP) can mildly enhance triacylglycerol synthesis in bovine adipose tissue. To fulfill the second objective, nine 9-mo-old steers were housed individually for two periods of 3 wk each. During the first period, four of the nine steers were fed to 50% of NEm requirement and the other five consumed the same diet ad libitum. After the first period, all steers consumed feed ad libitum for 2 wk and were assigned the opposite ration for the second period. Steers gained 40.5 kg BW when allowed ad libitum access to feed but lost 30.2 kg BW when feed intake was restricted (SE = 7.84; P < 0.01). At the end of each period, s.c. adipose tissue was sectioned into explants and incubated as described above. Four explants per steer per period were used to test effects of insulin (0 and 1 nM) and hASP (0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 microM). Insulin did not influence incorporation of acetate or oleate. Acetate incorporation (P < 0.32) was 0.99, 1.03, 1.04, and 1.10 nmol x mg(-1) h(-1) (SE = 0.13) and oleate incorporation (P < 0.01) was 0.347, 0.357, 0.353, and 0.420 nmol x mg(-1)h(-1) (SE = 0.022) for 0, 0.01, 0.1, and 1 microM hASP, respectively. Feed restriction reduced (P < 0.01) acetate and oleate incorporation by 95 and 40%, respectively. No interactions among feed intake, insulin, and hASP were detected. Climate and land-use change have led to disturbance regimes in many ecosystems without a historical analog, leading to uncertainty about how species adapted to past conditions will respond to novel post-disturbance landscapes.
Objectives
We examined habitat selection by spotted owls in a post-fire landscape. We tested whether selection or avoidance of severely burned areas could be explained by patch size or configuration, and whether variation in selection among individuals could be explained by differences in habitat availability.
Methods
We applied mixed-effects models to GPS data from 20 spotted owls in the Sierra Nevada, California, USA, with individual owls occupying home ranges spanning a broad range of post-fire conditions after the 2014 King Fire.
Results
Individual spotted owls whose home ranges experienced less severe fire (<?5% of home range severely burned) tended to select severely burned forest, but owls avoided severely burned forest when more of their home range was affected (~ 5–40%). Owls also tended to select severe fire patches that were smaller in size and more complex in shape, and rarely traveled?>?100-m into severe fire patches. Spotted owls avoided areas that had experienced post-fire salvage logging but the interpretation of this effect was nuanced. Owls also avoided areas that were classified as open and/or young forest prior to the fire.
Conclusions
Our results support the hypothesis that spotted owls are adapted to historical fire regimes characterized by small severe fire patches in this region. Shifts in disturbance regimes that produce novel landscape patterns characterized by large, homogeneous patches of high-severity fire may negatively affect this species.
