SUMMARY Two newly-born Anglo Nubian kids with clinical evidence of a severe neurological condition were examined. Pathological examination revealed extensive cytoplasmic vacuolation in neural tissue and in localised areas in the kidney, pancreas and lymphoid tissue. The finding of excess urinary glycosaminoglycans (GAG) is the first step in the laboratory diagnosis of mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). Urinary screening tests are based upon the binding of GAG to dimethylmethylene blue. Alternatively, paper spot tests using toluidine blue are used in human and veterinary laboratory medicine. Positive samples undergo GAG isolation for subsequent characterization. Here, we describe a 3‐year‐old English Cocker Spaniel with a positive urinary GAG test, but without other clinical signs of MPS. Urine samples were strongly positive with the dimethylmethylene blue test, and isolated GAG subjected to electrophoresis on cellulose acetate revealed a band co‐migrating with dermatan sulfate. However, the isolated GAG were resistant to digestion with chondroitinase ABC, suggesting that the band did not represent dermatan sulfate. This was confirmed by mobility of the isolated GAG different from dermatan sulfate on agarose gel electrophoresis. MPS types VI and VII were excluded by enzyme assay. To test the hypothesis of a nutritional source, a healthy control dog was fed the same dog food as the index case. His urine showed a comparable abnormal GAG screening test and electrophoretic pattern. In addition, the analysis of an algal supplement present in the administered dog food showed a similar electrophoretic GAG pattern. The Cocker Spaniel was not available for further testing after withdrawal of the supplement. Algae contain highly sulfated fucans and galactans, and it appears that commercial dog food containing such algal, and possibly other, supplements can give rise to false‐positive urinary MPS screening tests.  相似文献

Various biocidal and fungicidal treatments were applied to the soil of a 39-year-old apple orchard and their effects studied on the growth of replanted apples. With pot-grown apple seedlings as test plants, pre-planting soil treatments with chloropicrin, propylene oxide, steam or formalin increased growth on average by 123% and did not differ significantly from one another; the effect of furalaxyl* was small. With M.9 rootstocks as test plants and in situ soil treatments, formalin increased growth on average by 188%; furalaxyl and metalaxyl* did not cause significant growth increases.  相似文献

A continuous-flow apparatus is described for the maintenance of groups of adult Fasciola hepatica. The ammonia produced by the flukes was used as a measure of their metabolic activity and it was shown that this is best maintained in culture fluids containing a large proportion of bovine serum. More ammonia per fluke was consistently produced when the flow rate of the medium was increased but including small pieces of clotted sheep blood or increasing the number of flukes per culture had no significant effects.  相似文献

The susceptibility of naive cattle to infection with cysticerci of Taenia crocutae was tested using three six- to nine-month-old Ayrshire bull calves, previously unexposed to infection with taeniid eggs. One calf was given 10,000 T crocutae eggs orally, another 5000 hatched unactivated oncospheres orally and the third 5000 hatched and activated oncospheres by intravenous injection. None of the calves contained viable cysticerci at post mortem examination 15 to 17 weeks later. All three calves contained small numbers of lesions in the liver and lesions were also present in the lungs of the calf which received oncospheres intravenously. All the calves developed an antibody response which was most pronounced in the calf given hatched unactivated oncospheres orally.  相似文献
