Effects of ractopamine hydrochloride (RAC) supplementation and postmortem aging on palatability of beef from steers differing in biological type were evaluated using LM samples from British, Continental crossbred, and Brahman crossbred calf-fed steers (n = 98/type). Equal numbers of steers within each type were assigned to treatments of 0 or 200 mg.steer(-1).d(-1) of RAC fed during the final 28 d of the finishing period. Warner-Bratzler shear force (WBSF) was measured at 3, 7, 14, and 21 d postmortem, and trained sensory panel (TP) evaluation was conducted using LM samples aged for 14 d postmortem. A RAC x type interaction (P = 0.006) was detected for WBSF. Within each type, steers fed RAC produced steaks with greater (P < 0.05) WBSF values than steaks from control steers; however, the magnitude of the effect of RAC on WBSF was more pronounced among Brahman cross-breds (5.53 vs. 4.96 +/- 0.10 kg) than among Continental crossbred (4.16 vs. 3.96 +/- 0.10 kg) and British steers (4.10 vs. 3.75 +/- 0.10 kg). The effect of RAC on WBSF, though diminished slightly by aging (mean WBSF difference: 3 d = 0.49 kg; 21 d = 0.24 kg), was not completely mitigated by 21 d of postmortem storage (P(RAC x AGE) = 0.16). Steers fed RAC produced steaks that received lower (P < 0.05) TP ratings for tenderness (8.09 vs. 8.95 +/- 0.18) and juiciness (7.41 vs. 8.07 +/- 0.16 kg), along with slightly lower (P = 0.06) ratings for beef flavor (6.67 vs. 6.93 +/- 0.10 kg), compared with steaks from unsupplemented steers, regardless of biological type. Among the 3 biological types, Brahman crossbred cattle produced steaks with the greatest (P < 0.05) WBSF values at each aging period; WBSF values for steaks from British and Continental type steers did not differ (P > 0.05) at any aging time. Sensory panel ratings of tenderness, juiciness, and beef flavor were greatest (P < 0.05) for steaks from British steers, and least (P < 0.05) for steaks produced by Brahman-type steers. Results from this study suggest that RAC supplementation slightly decreases LM tenderness (WBSF and TP) of British, Continental crossbred, and Brahman cross-bred steers, and that the effect of RAC on WBSF may be more pronounced in steaks from Brahman crossbred cattle than among stenks from Continental type or British steers. 相似文献

Total particulate mercury (TPM) may constitute, in general, a small percentage by mass of total atmospheric mercury, but under certain conditions it can be a very significant form of atmospheric Hg, and play an important role in the deposition of mercury to terrestrial and aquatic cosystems. To understand the cycling and distribution of mercury in the environment, accurate determination of the total concentration and speciation of TPM are necessary. This article provides a review of scientific and technical literature published in the past 5 yr pertaining to sampling and analytical methodologies for the determination and chemical speciation of TPM in ambient air. Sampling methods discussed include the conventional filtration method and the diffusion denuder-based technique. Distilleries produce a huge quantity of effluents, popularly known as spent wash (SW), which when bio-methanated produce post-methanation effluents (PME). A field experiment on soybean–wheat system was conducted for five consecutive years in a Vertisol of central India to evaluate the effect of distillery effluent (DE) on soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics. Ten treatment combinations consisting of control, 100% NPK + Farmyard Manure (FYM), and graded level of SW and PME were applied. Total carbon content of soil increased significantly with applications of FYM and DE. SW was found superior in enhancing carbon content of soil in comparison to PME. Farmyard Manure contributed more carbon toward the recalcitrant pool, whereas DE contributed more carbon toward the active and slow pool. Nitrogen (N) availability was significantly improved with the application of DE. Balanced application of DE may act as amendment for increasing C and N stocks in Vertisol. 相似文献

Crop loss of onion bulbs during storage carries an exceptionally high economic impact because a large portion of the production expenses has been expended before storage. Because of this, it is important to define practices that can reduce onion bulb losses caused by storage rots. This study investigates the impact of various curing parameters on disease development resulting from infection by Pantoea agglomerans, P. ananatis and P. allii on onion bulb cultivars Vaquero and Redwing, during storage. Overall, both the incidence and mean rot severity were similar amongst the bulbs under comparable conditions regardless of the species of Pantoea inoculated, although a significant difference was detected between the two onion bulb cultivars. In addition, a significant reduction of storage rot was observed when curing temperatures were ≤35°C. At temperatures >35°C, a shorter curing duration (2 days vs 14 days) decreased the severity of bulb rot due to Pantoea. This increased understanding of the inter‐relationships between the parameters used for curing, and the incidence and severity of bulb rot caused by Pantoea helps provide guidance towards using the curing process as a means to reduce the level of damage resulting from post‐harvest storage rot. 相似文献

Turbulent fluxes of carbon, water and energy were measured at the Wind River Canopy Crane, Washington, USA from 1999 to 2004 with eddy-covariance instrumentation above (67 m) and below (2.5 m) the forest canopy. Here we present the decomposition of net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE) into gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (R(eco)) and tree canopy net CO(2) exchange (DeltaC) for an old-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco)-western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.) forest. Significant amounts of carbon were recycled within the canopy because carbon flux measured at the below-canopy level was always upward. Maximum fluxes reached 4-6 micromol m(-2) s(-1) of CO(2) into the canopy air space during the summer months, often equaling the net downward fluxes measured at the above-canopy level. Ecosystem respiration rates deviated from the expected exponential relationship with temperature during the summer months. An empirical ecosystem stress term was derived from soil water content and understory flux data and was added to the R(eco) model to account for attenuated respiration during the summer drought. This attenuation term was not needed in 1999, a wet La Ni?a year. Years in which climate approximated the historical mean, were within the normal range in both NEE and R(eco), but enhanced or suppressed R(eco) had a significant influence on the carbon balance of the entire stand. In years with low respiration the forest acts as a strong carbon sink (-217 g C m(-2) year(-1)), whereas years in which respiration is high can turn the ecosystem into a weak to moderate carbon source (+100 g C m(-2) year(-1)). 相似文献

ABSTRACT Traditional methods of quantifying Pythium spp. rely on the use of selective media and dilution plating. However, high variability is inherent in this type of enumeration and counts may not be representative of the pathogenic population of Pythium spp. Variable regions of the internal transcribed spacer of the rDNA were used to design species-specific primers for detection and quantification of nine Pythium spp. from soils in eastern Washington. Primer pairs were designed for Pythium abappressorium, P. attrantheridium, P. heterothallicum, P. irregulare group I, P. irregulare group IV, P. paroecandrum, P. rostratifingens, P. sylvaticum, and P. ultimum and used with real-time polymerase chain reaction. Standard curves were generated for each of the species using SYBR Green I fluorescent dye for detection of amplification. Seventy-seven isolates of Pythium were screened to confirm specificity of each primer set. DNA was extracted from soil and standard curves were generated for P. irregulare group I, P. irregulare group IV, and P. ultimum to correlate populations of each species in the soil with quantities of DNA amplified from the same soil. Examination of raw field soils revealed results similar to those observed in previous studies. This new technique for the quantification of Pythium spp. is rapid and accurate, and will be a useful tool in the future study of these pathogenic Pythium spp. 相似文献

Intensely-manured ponds produce 15–30 kg fish ha?1 day?1 with cow or chicken manure and nitrogen- and phosphate-rich fertilizers as the only nutritional inputs. The manure as it is supplied to the ponds is not a good fish food and does not produce good fish growth. Quantitative analysis shows that the production of all organisms, autotrophic and heterotrophic, pelagic and benthic, large enough to be used directly by the fish (i.e., larger than 37 microns) is adequate to account for less than half of the measured fish growth. Production within the microbial community that flourishes on and rapidly digests the manure organic matter is adequate to produce the measured fish growth. The fish appear to harvest the microorganisms at the level of bacteria and protozoa, by ingesting the small straw-like particles which comprise much of the manure and serve as the substrate for the microbial growth. 相似文献
