The objective of this research was to study the effect of irrigation levels (five levels from 102 to 457 mm of water) on the physical and chemical properties and ethanol fermentation performance of maize. Twenty maize samples with two crop rotation systems, grain sorghum–maize and maize–maize, were harvested in 2011 and evaluated at the Kansas State University Southwest Research‐Extension Center near Garden City, Kansas, under a semiarid climate. Results showed that maize kernel weight, density, and breakage susceptibility decreased as irrigation level decreased. Starch contents of maize samples grown under a low irrigation level were approximately 3.0% lower than those under a high irrigation level. Protein contents ranged from 9.24 to 11.30% and increased as irrigation level decreased. Maize flour thermal and rheological properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry and the Micro Visco‐Amylo‐Graph‐U device. Starch gelatinization temperature increased significantly as irrigation level decreased, whereas starch pasting viscosity decreased as irrigation level decreased. Free amino nitrogen (FAN) was significantly affected by irrigation level: it increased as irrigation decreased. Ethanol fermentation efficiency ranged from 90.96 to 92.48% and was positively correlated with FAN during the first 32 h of fermentation (r2 = 0.645). Deficit irrigation had a negative impact on ethanol yield. The maize with lower irrigation yielded about 4.0% less ethanol (44.14 mL/100 g of maize) than maize with high irrigation (45.92 mL/100 g of maize). Residual starch contents in the distillers dried grains with solubles were in a range of 0.80–1.02%. In conclusion, deficit irrigation had a significant effect on physical properties, chemical composition, ethanol yield, and fermentation efficiency of maize. 相似文献

Caffeine-induced uncoupling of mitosis from the completion of DNA replication in mammalian cells 总被引:35,自引:0,他引:35
Caffeine was shown to induce mitotic events in mammalian cells before DNA replication (S phase) was completed. Synchronized BHK cells that were arrested in early S phase underwent premature chromosome condensation, nuclear envelope breakdown, morphological "rounding up," and mitosis-specific phosphoprotein synthesis when they were exposed to caffeine. These mitotic responses occurred only after the cells had entered S phase and only while DNA synthesis was inhibited by more than 70 percent. Inhibitors of protein synthesis blocked these caffeine-induced events, while inhibitors of RNA synthesis had little effect. These results suggest that caffeine induces the translation or stabilizes the protein product (or products) of mitosis-related RNA that accumulates in S-phase cells when DNA replication is suppressed. The ability to chemically manipulate the onset of mitosis should be useful for studying the regulation of this event in mammalian cells. 相似文献

The reaction of the Nalpha-hippuryllysine (BzGK) with fructose was investigated in two model systems to obtain an insight in fructose-induced modification of lysine in bakery products. After BzGK and fructose had been heated in a buffered low-moisture model system (80 degrees C, 60 min, aW = 0.86, pH 7.4), formation of epimeric Heyns compounds Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-glucosyl-lysine (BzGGlcK) and Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-mannosyl-lysine (BzGManK) was clearly demonstrated using RP-HPLC with UV as well as MS detection. The Amadori compound Nalpha-hippuryl-Nepsilon-fructosyl-lysine (BzGFruK) was formed in glucose-containing samples. When BzGK was added to the dough of fructose-containing biscuits, the Heyns compounds were detectable after baking at 175 degrees C for 7 min. The yields of the Heyns compounds in the fructose-containing biscuits and the yield of the Amadori compound in the glucose-containing biscuits were determined to 33 and 63%, pointing to the fact that formation of substantial amounts of Heyns products is very likely in fructose-containing bakery products. 相似文献

A 4-yr study was conducted to determine the effects of two grazing methods (GM) at two stocking rates (SR) on alfalfa pasture plant productivity and animal performance and to ascertain the effect of grazing systems on subsequent performance of steers fed a high-concentrate diet. Eight pasture plots (.76 ha) were seeded in 1988 with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L. var. WL225) and divided into two blocks of four pastures each. Grazing methods consisted of a traditional four-paddock or an intensive 13-paddock system. Pastures were managed to allow a 36-d rest period with an average grazing season of 110 d. The low and high SR were 5.9 vs 11.7, 5.3 vs 10.5, 5.3 vs 7.9, and 5.3 vs 7.9 steers/ha for years 1989 to 1992, respectively. Following the grazing season, steers were placed in a feedlot and fed a high-concentrate diet (81% high-moisture corn, 14% corn silage, 5% protein-mineral supplement) for an average of 211 d. There was no effect of GM on herbage mass, pasture phase ADG, or live weight gain/hectare. Increasing the number of paddocks was beneficial when herbage mass was limited and stocking rate was above 7.9 steers/ha. Increasing SR above 7.9 steers/ha decreased herbage mass and pasture-phase ADG. As forage allowance increased, pasture-phase ADG increased quadratically (R2 = .82, P < .001), reached a plateau, and then decreased. Previous grazing system did not influence the performance of steers in the feedlot or their carcass characteristics. Optimum SR is dependent on herbage mass produced. 相似文献

Honeybee swarms and complex brains show many parallels in how they make decisions. In both, separate populations of units (bees or neurons) integrate noisy evidence for alternatives, and, when one population exceeds a threshold, the alternative it represents is chosen. We show that a key feature of a brain--cross inhibition between the evidence-accumulating populations--also exists in a swarm as it chooses its nesting site. Nest-site scouts send inhibitory stop signals to other scouts producing waggle dances, causing them to cease dancing, and each scout targets scouts' reporting sites other than her own. An analytic model shows that cross inhibition between populations of scout bees increases the reliability of swarm decision-making by solving the problem of deadlock over equal sites. 相似文献

Grain sorghum production in calcareous soils is frequently affected by iron (Fe) chlorosis. Greenhouse experiments were conducted to screen sorghum hybrids for their tolerance to iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) and evaluate the effectiveness of Fe chelate application in alleviating IDC. Treatments in Exp. 1 were a factorial combination of 14 sorghum hybrids and three Fe chelate application rates (0, 3.4 and 6.8?kg product ha?1) applied in-furrow with the seed at the time of planting. Exp. 2 evaluated two sorghum hybrids (85Y40 and NK5418) and three Fe chelate rates (0 and 3.4?kg product ha?1) at planting, and a split treatment of 3.4?kg ha?1. Results showed iron chelate application suppressed IDC and increased leaf chlorophyll content and grain yield in susceptible hybrids. Split application of Fe chelate suppressed IDC and increased grain yield. Our results indicate sorghum hybrids G8G08, 86G32 and 87P06 showed promise for tolerance to IDC. 相似文献

Populations of 64 taxa of Trifolium were assessed for nitrogen fixation and dry matter production with and without added mineral nitrogen. The number of rhizobia per gram of compost capable of inducing nodulation was tested in 7 species and ranged from 3 to 114, showing interspecific variation for nodulation with indigenous rhizobia. In a sample of 8 species, nitrogen fixation was assessed by acetylene reduction and nodule scoring. There was a good correlation (84 %, P ≤ 0.01) between the two methods, and therefore nodule score was used as a measure of nitrogen fixation in the main assessment. There were large differences between populations in terms of shoot and root dry weight, the shoot: root ratio and nodule score. Added nitrate had a significant effect on all characters, increasing shoot dry weight and the shoot: root ratio and decreasing root dry weight and the nodule score. Results showed the importance of assessing legume germplasm with and without added nitrate in locations where suitable rhizobia for the nodulation of exotic species might not be present. 相似文献

High mortality was observed in young replacement layers. Balls of bale net wrap strings were found in the crop and/or gizzard of birds causing impaction and traumatic injury. Some birds experienced loss of portions or the entire tongue secondary to ischemic necrosis. Mortality stopped with the removal of strings from the environment. 相似文献
