ABSTRACT:     The difference in paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin accumulation in the crabs Telmessus acutidens and Charybdis japonica was investigated at Onahama, Fukushima Prefecture, from 2002 to 2005. The level of toxin accumulation in the hepatopancreas of T. acutidens corresponded to that of mussels when examined on a yearly basis. In 2003, some crabs had a high toxicity of approximately 1000 MU, which compares to one-third of the human minimum lethal dose. Therefore T. acutidens should be monitored as a vector species of PSP toxin. The toxin profile of T. acutidens was also investigated. Because an increase in highly toxic species of PSP toxins with a decrease in low toxic species, such as N -sulfocarbamoyl-11-hydroxysulfate toxins, was not clearly observed between consecutive samples, toxin transformation in T. acutidens was considered to have a minimal impact on toxicity. PSP toxins were also detected in several specimens of C. japonica , but the highest toxicity was only 7.4 MU/g in the hepatopancreas. Because C. japonica is widely distributed in the coastal waters of Japan, investigation of toxin accumulation in the crab should be continued, including its investigation in different areas of water from Onahama, where the causative dinoflagellates of PSP occur in different conditions.  相似文献

The significance of Mn and Fe for the growth of the coastal marine diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii was investigated by culture experiments in the presence of precipitated Fe(III) hydroxide [am-Fe(III)] and EDTA-Fe(III) complex with or without Mn addition. The culture experiments in all media without any added Mn(II) resulted in the very low phytoplankton growth for cell density and chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration. In contrast, sufficient Mn addition (25 nM) induced the maximum growth both for cell generation and Chl a production. By using an approach in which further iron uptake by T. weissflogii from external iron in the culture media is prevented by adding hydroxamate siderophore desferrioxamine B (DFB) during cultivation, we examined the ability of T. weissflogii to grow on intracellularly stored Fe after the DFB addition. The addition of DFB after 3- and 5-days of cultivation resulted in the lower growth rate and lower maximum yields for cell density and Chl a concentration in solid 7-day-aged am-Fe(III) medium than in freshly precipitated am-Fe(III) medium. The longer aging time of am-Fe(III) in medium reduced the supply of bioavailable iron in the medium by the slower dissolution rate of am-Fe(III) with the longer aging time. In addition, phytoplankton growth for cell generation in EDTA-Fe(III) complex media in the presence of insufficient Mn (0 and 5 nM) is strongly influenced by the bioavailable iron supply through the dissociation of EDTA-Fe(III). These results may suggest that T. weissflogii in longer aged am-Fe(III) medium and in EDTA-Fe(III) medium with a higher ratio of EDTA:Fe(III) is in Fe-limitation of growth, which probably increases the production rate of the reactive oxygen species (ROS), and the corresponding up-regulation of the superoxide dismuting enzyme Mn-SOD increases the requirement for Mn.  相似文献

To establish clinical markers for canine necrotising meningoencephalitis (NME) and to elucidate its pathogenesis, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and anti-GFAP autoantibodies were measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 32 dogs with NME, 23 dogs with other inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases, 27 dogs with miscellaneous CNS diseases and 25 healthy dogs, including five pugs. The dogs with NME had the highest levels of anti-GFAP autoantibodies. The diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of anti-GFAP autoantibodies for NME were 91 per cent and 73 per cent, respectively. Some of the dogs with NME and the healthy pugs, had high CSF concentrations of GFAP, suggesting a breed-specific fragility of astrocytes. The leakage of GFAP and the development of autoimmunity may be key to understanding the pathogenesis of NME.  相似文献

A 7-month-old castrated French bulldog was presented with a left-sided mandibular tumor. The initial tumor biopsy diagnosis was ameloblastoma. The owner brought this dog the Kitasato University Veterinary Teaching Hospital for more detailed examination and treatment. Computed tomography revealed a tumor on the left lateral mandibular gingiva from the caudal third of the incisor tooth to the right canine tooth, associated with severe amorphous osteolysis of the mandibular bone. The tumor was surgically excised and diagnosed as papillary squamous cell carcinoma. Currently, 2514 d (6.9 y) since the operation, the dog is healthy, without recurrence.Key clinical message:Although papillary squamous cell carcinoma is rare, many cases have been reported in the oral cavity of medium-to large-sized dogs. Based on this report, papillary squamous cell carcinoma can occur in small dogs such as young French bulldogs and a good prognosis can be achieved with proper resection.  相似文献

We evaluated the diagnostic significance of the N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration in asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement. The plasma NT-proBNP concentration was measured in 21 clinically healthy control cats, and 67 asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement defined as end-diastolic interventricular septum thickness (IVSd) and/or diastolic left ventricular posterior wall thickness (LVPWd) >0.6 cm, vertebla heart scale (VHS) >7.8, and/or left atria/aorta ratio (LA/Ao) >1.5. The plasma NT-proBNP concentration in the asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement (median: 662.0, range: 24.0-2,449.0 pmol/l) was significantly higher than that in the controls (24.0, 24.0-95.0 pmol/l, P<0.001). The plasma NT-proBNP concentration was significantly correlated with the VHS, LA/Ao, IVSd and LVPWd (r=0.578, P<0.001; r=0.462, P<0.001; r=0.563, P<0.001; and r=0.764, P<0.001, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic analysis showed a cut-off value of 95.0 pmol/l for the detection of asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement, sensitivity and specificity of 88.1 and 100%, respectively, and an area under the curve of 0.971. These results suggest that the determination of the plasma NT-proBNP concentration can be a useful screening test for asymptomatic cats with cardiac enlargement.  相似文献

Gastric ulcers cause appetite loss, poor body condition, and colic in horses. This study investigated the protective effect of a rice fermented extract on the gastric mucosa in 17 healthy Thoroughbreds. For one month, horses in the rice fermented extract (nine horses) and control (eight horses) groups were orally administered a rice fermented extract (100%; 0.2 ml/kg, SID) and tap water (0.2 ml/kg), respectively. Gastric endoscopic images were obtained before and one month after rice fermented extract administration. The gastric ulcer score was lower after administration (median, 1; maximum, 2; minimum, 1) than before administration (median, 4; maximum, 4; minimum, 3) in the rice fermented extract group (P<0.05). In conclusion, the administration of a rice fermented extract for one month improves gastric mucosal lesions in Thoroughbreds with gastric ulcers.  相似文献

In rats, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish malignant reticuloses from astrocytomas in routine histopathological assessment. In the present study, four spontaneous brain neoplasms developing in the cerebrum of one Wistar Hannover rat and three Sprague-Dawley rats were immunohistochemically examined using microglia and macrophage markers. Histopathologically, these neoplasms were localized mainly in the cerebral cortex, hypothalamus or piriform lobe, and the portions showing solid growth did not show characteristic cellular arrangement but had an indistinct boundary with the surrounding brain parenchyma. Neoplastic cells had oval or pleomorphic small nuclei with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. Two cases showed neoplastic cell infiltration into the meninges and perivascular spaces. Silver staining showed lack of reticulin fiber production in the stroma of the neoplasms. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were strongly positive for Iba-1 and sporadically positive for CD68 in all four cases. On the basis of these results, all the neoplasms examined here could be distinguished from astrocytomas and diagnosed as malignant reticuloses. Thus, immunohistochemical demonstration of microglia/macrophage characters, such as using Iba-1, is considered to be helpful for differential diagnosis of malignant reticuloses from astrocytomas among spontaneously occurring primary brain neoplasms in rats.  相似文献

In the past few decades, moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) forests in Japan have rapidly expanded, and moso bamboo is now invading nearby native forests. In this study, we assessed the effects of moso bamboo invasion on the soil microbial community and activity in warm temperate forests in western Japan. We sampled soil, measured soil microbial respiration, and used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis to examine changes in microbial community composition. We found that the invasion of bamboo into the native secondary forest of Japan can cause changes to some soil properties. We also observed a significant difference in soil microbial community composition between the bamboo and native forests. The ratio of bacterial PLFA to fungal PLFA was significantly higher after bamboo invasion, while bacterial PLFA contents were significantly lower in the organic layer. Soil microbial respiration rates significantly decreased in the organic layer, and significantly increased in the mineral layer. Microbial respiration activity, as indicated by soil microbial respiration rates per total PLFA content, decreased in the organic layer but increased in the mineral layer after bamboo invasion. These results indicate that bamboo invasion significantly affects associated soil microbial communities and decomposition patterns of soil organic matter.  相似文献

The purposes of this study were to examine the use of furniture mill residues containing high-density raw materials in particleboard production and to evaluate the effect of mixing several types of furnish on board performance. Wood wastes collected from the furniture industry in Japan containing matoa (Pometia pinnata), Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii), and sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) with different particle shapes were prepared as raw materials for use in the manufacture of experimental particleboards. Seven board types and three mixed boards were manufactured with three replications. Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) resin was applied at 6 % content in mat preparation. The pressing conditions were temperature of 180 °C, initial pressure of 3 MPa, and pressing time of 5 min. The target density was 0.72 g/cm³. This study showed that matoa particleboard had properties suitable for use in interior applications, although its properties were considered inferior compared with other particleboards. Improvement of matoa particleboard could be achieved by mixing with higher quality wood particles such as those from sugi or Douglas-fir. The furnish type used in this study affected board performance. All residues from furniture mills have the potential to be used for particleboard production, even when they contain different furnish types and wood species.  相似文献

To study the behavior of histamine-producing bacteria during the processing and storage of shimesaba, we inoculated histamine-producing bacteria into raw mackerel and then evaluated bacterial counts and histamine content at each shimesaba processing step. Six histamine-producing bacteria—Morganella morganii, Enterobacter aerogenes, Raoultella planticola, Photobacterium damselae (2 strains), and Photobacterium phosphoreum—were inoculated onto the surface of mackerel fillets at various cell densities (no inoculation, 104, and 10cfu ml?1). The fillets were then treated according to the common procedure used for processing shimesaba. The concentration of NaCl in brine during the salting procedure was 10 % (w/v), and the main ingredients of the marinade broth were 27 % vinegar, 3.8 % sucrose, 0.3 % sodium glutamate, and 0.1 % sodium succinate. The level of histamine-producing bacteria and of histamine did not increase during the salting and marinating procedures. However, during the storage tests, histamine content increased remarkably in the shimesaba products stored at 10 °C for 3 days, and organoleptical degradation was also observed. However, significant deterioration, based on bacterial count, histamine content, and organoleptic evaluation, was not observed in samples stored at 5 °C. These results indicate that the use of traditional marinade broth during the processing of shimesaba and storage below 5 °C are effective methods for preventing histamine accumulation.  相似文献
