We aimed to identify patterns of diversity in a below-ground community of microarthropods (mites and Collembola) after 15 months of a nutrient (calcium and nitrogen) manipulation experiment, located at the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Soil Biodiversity Site in Scotland, UK. We found that microarthropod densities increased with elevated soil fertility, but we detected no concurrent change in the diversity of soil microarthropods (mites and Collembola combined). That microarthropod density increased concurrently with improvements in soil fertility and plant productivity suggests that soil microarthropod communities are predominately regulated by bottom-up forces, driven by increased energy transfer via plant inputs to soil, providing increased food resources for fauna. However, that we found no concurrent change in the diversity of soil microarthropods provides little support for the idea that the diversity of soil fauna is positively related to their population density, primary productivity or improvements in soil conditions resulting from nutrient manipulations. However, we did find that microarthropod communities of more fertile sites contained a greater proportion of predators suggesting that more energy was transferred to higher trophic levels under elevated soil fertility. Our findings suggest that unlike plant communities, soil faunal diversity may not be strongly regulated by competition in productive situations, since competitive exclusion might not occur due to increased predation. Whilst we conclude that soil microarthropod diversity at our study site has not been affected by the nutrient additions to date, in the longer term we predict that changes in community composition and diversity could arise, most likely through top-down regulation of the soil food web.  相似文献

The effects of nighttime air temperature (NTAT) on the color of milled rice were investigated. Elevated NTATs occurring during the critical grain‐filling stages of kernel development impacted the color of head rice. Six cultivars, grown at multiple field locations from northern to southern Arkansas during 2007–2010, were evaluated for head rice color, using whiteness (L*) and yellowness (b*) indices, and for chalk. Nighttime temperatures were recorded throughout production at each of the selected locations, and the 95th percentiles of NTAT frequencies (NT95) were calculated for each cultivar's reproductive (R) stages. Head rice color values were analyzed in relation to NT95 occurring during the grain‐filling (R6–R8) stages and in relation to percent chalkiness. Whiteness generally increased with increasing NTAT and with increasing chalkiness. Yellowness decreased as chalkiness increased. Moreover, kernel whiteness increased even when measured in the absence of chalky kernels, suggesting that starch granule organization throughout the kernel, even in nonchalky portions, was altered, which could result in compromised physical integrity and processing functionality. Cultivars varied in their susceptibility to the effect of NTAT on color, as has been previously demonstrated with milling quality and functional properties.  相似文献

In managed landscapes, habitat structure is frequently manipulated through the creation of features such as tracks, hedges, and waterways. If predator and prey activity are concentrated around these features, levels of predation may be elevated in these landscapes. This issue is of particular importance when habitat structures are used to attract species of conservation concern. For example, the installation of linear waterways in wet grasslands is a common form of habitat management to benefit breeding waders and wader nests and foraging chicks tend to be aggregated around wet features. If predator activity is also focused around these features, and if their linearity increases the probability of prey being located, then the conservation benefits of this management technique may be eliminated. We explore predator movement in relation to the structure and complexity of linear wet features within a lowland wet grassland landscape. We examine patterns of nest and chick predation in lapwing (Vanellus vanellus) at the whole-site, between-field and within-field scales. Mammalian predators were responsible for the majority of nest predation. However, we found no evidence that mammalian predators used linear wet features disproportionately within the landscape, or that wet feature distribution influenced the probability of nest or chick predation. At the whole-site scale, nest predation rates were significantly higher in areas with greater predator presence and lowest where the number of breeding neighbours was high. Thus, predation levels were influenced by large-scale patterns of predator presence and lapwing density but not by the use of linear wet features as a habitat management tool. Managing predator impacts is therefore likely to require empirical assessments of local predator distribution and abundance in order to target measures effectively.  相似文献

In recent years the consumption of tea and herbal infusions has increased. These hot drinks are consumed as daily drinks as well as for medicinal purposes. All tea varieties (white, yellow, green, oolong, black and puerh) originate from the leaves of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. All extracts made of plant or herbal materials which do not contain Camellia sinensis are referred as herbal infusions or tisanes. During processing and manufacturing fungal contamination of the plant materials is possible, enabling contamination of these products with mycotoxins. In this study a multimycotoxin UPLC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the analysis of the raw tea and herbal infusion materials as well as for their drinkable products. The samples were analyzed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), with a mobile phase consisting of variable mixtures of water and methanol with 0.3% formic acid. The limits of detection for the different mycotoxins varied between 2.1 μg/kg and 121 μg/kg for raw materials and between 0.4 μg/L and 46 μg/L for drinkable products. Afterward 91 different tea and herbal infusion samples were analyzed. Only in one sample, Ceylon melange, 76 μg/kg fumonisin B(1) was detected. No mycotoxins were detected in the drinkable products.  相似文献

Rice (Oryza sativa) in Asia is typically grown on submerged soils in intensive cropping systems with only a brief interval between harvest of one crop and planting of the next. Incorporation of crop residues can be challenging because the fallow period between crops is often too short to allow sufficient decomposition. During early stages of anaerobic residue decomposition in flooded soils, plant growth may be inhibited by nutrient immobilization or by the production of potentially toxic organic acids. Straw from a brittle stem mutant of rice (Oryza sativa L. var. IR68) was tested in a 30-d incubation experiment under continuously flooded conditions in a greenhouse to determine if it would decompose more rapidly than the non-brittle phenotype, thereby allowing shorter fallow time between crops. Brittle straw decomposed faster, as indicated by 51% total C loss as CO2 or CH4 within 3 weeks of incorporation, compared with 28% for non-brittle straw. However, brittle straw also produced a significantly higher (P<0.0001) amount of formic, acetic, aconitic, propionic, and butyric acids than non-brittle straw. There was no difference in soil N immobilization pattern between the two straw types, or in P or K availability in the soil, perhaps due to the short duration of the experiment. To maximize the potential advantage of faster decomposition of brittle straw in intensive rice cropping systems, it may be helpful to manage water for sufficient soil aeration to mitigate the negative organic acid and methane production effects.  相似文献

有机酸积累和毒害是稻田秸杆还田中受到广泛关注的问题。本文以水稻与小麦秸杆为材料,采用淹水培养研究了甲酸、乙酸、丙酸及丁酸在士壤中的积累及其与秸秆碳氮比、氮肥添加量的关系。结果表明,在不施用氮肥的情况下。随秸秆用量的增加,秸秆处理的有机酸积累均显著增多。与稻秸处理相比,麦秸处理的有机酸(尤其足丙酸)积累量显著较高,土壤溶液中NH4^+浓度显著较低。加入尿素明显减少有机酸积累,促进CH4排放,但对CO2的排放无显著影响;氮素的影响在麦秸处理中表现的尤为明显。上述结果说明麦秸的高碳氮比增加了无机氮的生物固定,抑制有机酸向CH4转化,从而导致麦秸处理有机酸积累量高于稻秸处理。施用氮肥是减少麦秸还田后有机酸积累的有效措施之一,但此措施将可能促进CH4的排放。  相似文献

Breeding territoriality in birds means that a certain proportion of the adult population may breed in suboptimal habitats or not breed at all. Non-breeding birds, or floaters, can have a `buffer effect' on breeding population size. Farmland bird declines in Britain are measured and analysed in terms of numbers of territory-holding birds. We use a population dynamics model to illustrate how, because of the buffer effect of floaters, there can be a time lag between the start of total population decline and detectable breeding population decline. Differences in the timing of declines of closely related farmland birds could therefore be due to slight differences in their population dynamics, rather than differences in their response to agricultural change.  相似文献

This paper describes the identification and utilisation of a sequence-characterised amplified region (SCAR) marker specific for the Trichoderma virens biocontrol isolate GV4. The marker was developed from a RAPD-PCR amplification product unique to isolate GV4. When used as a hybridisation probe in Southern blot analysis, it hybridised to the DNA of the species T. virens alone and not to that of other Trichoderma species or closely related genera Gliocladium and Verticillium. The marker also produced a GV4-specific RFLP, distinguishing it from other T. virens isolates when probed to blots with HindII, BamHI or PstI genomic DNA digests. Primers designed from the sequence of the RAPD marker produced a diagnostic amplification product of 346 bp for GV4 alone, distinguishing it from all other test isolates. With the exception of one, test isolates did not produce an amplification product with the SCAR primers. The exception was a single Verticillium psalliotae isolate (ICMP5509) that produced a product of approx. 400 bp that was easily distinguished from the 346 bp product of GV4. The reliability of the SCAR-based diagnostic test was further improved with the introduction of a positive PCR reaction control to each test, achieved by converting the test to a duplex PCR system. Two universal primers flanking the two ITS and the 5.8S region of the ribosomal gene complex were introduced to each reaction to provide a test for PCR reaction inhibitors to eliminate false negatives in the diagnosis. Amplification of this multi-copy genomic region did not reduce diagnostic sensitivity of the single copy SCAR marker. To further increase the sensitivity of detecting GV4 propagules while maintaining a fast sample assessment assay, soil was amended with cornmeal, as a nutrient source, and a mix of antibiotics to favour Trichoderma growth. The soil mix was subsequently incubated for 5 d before total DNA was extracted. Under these conditions, the duplex soil PCR assay detected GV4 down to a concentration of 10 spores g−1 soil in non-sterile agricultural field soil. This study is the first to report the use of a duplex-PCR diagnostic bioassay for a species within the Hypocrea/Trichoderma genus.  相似文献
